How To Receive Messages From Specific Contacts In Do Not Disturb Mode On iPhone And iPad

How to Allow Calls from Favorites only when Do Not Disturb Mode is Enabled on iPhone (iOS 14.4)?

If you have ever missed an important call from a specific person because you forgot that your iPhone or iPad was in Do Not Disturb mode, you’re not alone. iOS 10 has a new feature that can help, but no one seems to be talking about it. It’s called Emergency Bypass and it was the people over at iAccessibility that first brought it to light for us.

Note: You have to turn on Emergency Bypass for phone calls and text messages separately.

How To Stop Phone Calls From Favorites When Do Not Disturb / Focus Is Enabled

Removing the Favorites override for Do Not Disturb is actually a pretty simple and straightforward procedure.

  • Head over to Settings from the home screen of your iPhone.
  • In the settings menu, scroll down and tap on Do Not Disturb which is located just above the Screen Time option.
  • Here, youll find the option Allow Calls From which is set to your Favorites. Tap on it to change the settings.
  • Now, simply select No One instead of Favorites for Do Not Disturb override and youre good to go.
  • There you go. Youve managed to remove the default override for Do Not Disturb mode on your iPhone.

Its worth pointing out that this override setting is only for incoming phone calls. Theres no similar override setting for message notifications and alerts when Do Not Disturb is enabled.

Also do note that this is different from Emergency Bypass contacts, which because that overrides everything its probably best for that to be limited to select family, spouse, partner, or best friend.

Considering you wanted to stop getting phone calls from your Favorites, you may also want to update the list of contacts in your Favorites list by removing the people who youre not close with or consider important to you anymore.

Did this resolve why you were still getting incoming calls from your favorite contacts when Do Not Disturb is turned on? What do you think of these features?

Setup Do Not Disturb Mode in iOS 7 [How To]

The app economy has changed everything, including how we communicate. For an OS like iOS to assume that phone calls are the primary thing we either want to block or let through is a 1990s mentality.

What Apple needs to do is completely rethink notifications and do-not-disturb. It needs to allow iPhone users to individually select apps that can punch through DND and issue an alert. Ideally, it should also allow apps to share a global favorites list so favorite contacts can be allowed to alert while other contacts using the same apps are muted.

Right now, Apple’s favorites mechanism is not, amazingly enough, in Contacts. You would think that if you had a contact you could declare that person a favorite in the Contacts app. As it turns out, you have to declare your contact a favorite in the Phone app. That should tell you everything you need to know about how backward Apple is in its implementation of favorites and DND.

Sadly, unless you’re one of those very lucky iPhone users who can power off your phone at night and not care if anyone needs to reach out to you, the rest of us are going to lose sleep over a do-not-disturb implementation that is disturbingly out of step.

How To Find If Someone Is Using Do Not Disturb Mode On iPhone

In general, you can suspect that a person that you are trying to Call is using Do Not Disturb Mode, in case you observe the following.

    1. You hear a single ring and your Call is abruptly diverted to the Voicemail.

This observation is based on our own testing where we tried to Call an iPhone placed on Do Not Disturb Mode. When we called the iPhone on Do Not Disturb Mode, we heard a single Ring and the Call was abruptly diverted to the Voicemail.

The testing iPhone that was placed on Do Not Disturb Mode did not Ring, Flash or display any sign of receiving an incoming Call.

    2. Text Messages Appear as Delivered

Next, we sent a Text Message to the iPhone on Do Not Disturb Mode. The Message went as normal, displaying the usual blue bubble with the status Delivered clearly appearing at the bottom of the text bubble.

Again as expected, the iPhone that was placed on Do Not Disturb Mode did not Ring, Vibrate, Flash or provide any indication of a new Message being received.

What Happens When You Facetime Someone On Do Not Disturb

We were able to test this and discovered that audio FaceTime calls do not come through when Do Not Disturb is enabled. It appears that the audio calls act like the Phone app, which does not allow calls when Do No Disturb is enabled, but when using video the calls still come through.

Disable Do Not Disturb For Specific Contacts On iPhone

Once you are done with your busy period or the reason for enabling Do Not Disturb Mode for specific Contacts, you can Turn OFF Do Not disturb by following the steps below.

    1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.

    2. Next, tap on the Conversation of the Contact that you want to Turn OFF Do Not Disturb Mode.

    3. On the next screen, tap on the Contact Name or Number and then tap on the i icon.

    4. On the next screen, toggle OFF the option for Hide Alerts.

    5. Tap on Done to save your settings.

    Call From A Different Number

The Do Not Disturb Mode has an option to Allow Calls from Favourite Contacts while disabling all other Calls.

In case the person that you are trying to reach is a close friend or relative of yours, it is quite possible that this person has only included your Home Phone Number as a favourite Contact and not your Work Phone Number.

Hence, try calling both from your Home and Work Phone to see if the Call goes through.

Another option would be to contact a person who you know is very close to this Contact of yours and try Calling from his/her Phone.

Why Are Calls Coming Through On Do Not Disturb

The default Do Not Disturb settings on the iPhone might be the reason for getting calls despite enabling DND option. By default, iOS only silences incoming calls and messages when the iPhone is locked. That means if you are actively using the iPhone with DND enabled, you will get calls and messages from the users.

    Scenarios For Either Mode

Bypass iPhone Do Not Disturb (#1361)

With the biggest difference between the two modes being the screen lighting up in silent mode when you receive a call or text, flipping the ring/silent switch is the easiest way to silence your iPhone as long as it’s in your pocket, purse or backpack. Just be sure you check to see if the Vibrate on Silent setting is disabled, because a vibrating phone can be just as distracting and therefore embarrassing as a ringing phone in some cases.

If you generally keep your iPhone out and about — in your hand, on your lap, on a table or desk — then Do Not Disturb is the better option so that your screen suddenly lighting up doesn’t distract other moviegoers, your classmates or parishioners. I would recommend setting Allow Calls From to No One if you will frequently enable Do Not Disturb manually so that you aren’t shamed when a call gets through from a Favorite contact or another exception.

How To Let Someone Bypass Your iPhone Do Not Disturb Settings

Every night before I sleep, I set my phone to Do Not Disturb, one of the many steps I have to take to not stare at my phone late into the evening. It makes it so that I can still receive text messages and calls, but I’m not notified.

My phone doesn’t ring, or vibrate, or even light up. It’s genuinely blissful to not have any notifications for a few hours each day, even if they are the hours before I go to bed and after I wake up. But some important calls still need to come through, like when my roommate is out on a first date, or when a family member is in labor.

Thankfully, it’s easy to enjoy the positive parts of Do Not Disturb while still ensuring those important calls come through.

What Do Callers Hear When Do Not Disturb Is On

When Do Not Disturb is turned on, it sends incoming calls to voicemail and does not alert you about calls or text messages. It also silences all notifications, so youre not disturbed by the phone. You might want to enable Do Not Disturb mode when you go to bed, or during meals, meetings, and movies.

How To Make Certain Contacts Ring On Silent iPhone

The fact is that we are easily distracted and often overwhelmed by constant notifications and calls. Using Do not disturb is more than recommended. But, what happens if you want to wind up a bit and switch to Silent Mode but still need to make certain contacts ring on your iPhone.

There are two ways to get the thing working, but one only applies to calls while notifications wont come through. If you want only calls to come through, DND is where you should look at. If, on the other hand, you want to be notified whenever a certain contact sends a message or calls, theres a tweak in Contacts Ringtone settings you should be looking into. Today, well explain both.

    Change Incoming Call Settings

How to let calls from certain people through Do Not Disturb

Does your iPhone or iPad fail to silence incoming phone calls when Do Not Disturb is active? That could be because youve set Do Not Disturb to allow all incoming calls. Go to the Do Not Disturb settings and tap the Allow Calls From option.

Make sure you set this to either Favorites or No One. You can choose All Contacts if you want to silence only incoming calls from unknown numbers while on Do Not Disturb.

How Can You Tell If Someone Blocked Your Number From Texting

Take a look at your texting app, which will most likely be iMessage. Most likely, when you send a message, you will get a delivered confirmation when the message has been delivered, he told Readers Digest. When you look at your messages with the person you think blocked you, look for that confirmation.

    Do Not Disturb While Driving

Introduced in iOS 11, Do Not Disturb While Driving limits the notifications you receive when youre behind the wheel. You can choose that Do Not Disturb activate automatically, when connected to your cars Bluetooth, or manually. Incoming calls will only be allowed if your iPhone is connected to the vehicles Bluetooth.

If you get a text message while enabled, you can select whether or not the sender receives an automatic message. First, select that the auto-reply gets sent to no one, recent text messages, favorites, or from everyone in your contacts. You can then create the auto-reply message.

If the senders message is important. They can respond to your auto-reply with URGENT, which will then break through Do Not Disturb, and youll be alerted to the notification.

If you don’t see this feature, your iPhone software may not be up to date. Make sure it is by updating your iPhone to the latest iOS.

    Get Calls From Individual Contacts

If theres an individual contact who you want to hear from, but they are not on your Favorites list, you can still make an exception to Do Not Disturb on a person-by-person basis.

    • Open Contacts
    • Select the entry for the person you want to bypass DND
    • Tap Edit in the cards upper right corner
    • Scroll down to Ringtone and tap it
    • At the top of the next card, toggle Emergency Bypass to on. That allows calls from that person to bypass Do Not Disturb.
    • Before you tap Done to finish, stop and think for a moment. You might not want to miss a call, but if you dont want to interrupt a meeting, you may want to set a more subtle ringtone or alert sound for that person than your usual ringtone.
    • You can also let texts from an individual bypass DND. Go back to the persons Contact card, tap Edit, and tap Text Tone.
    • Toggle Emergency Bypass to on.
    • Theres one way that Text Tone differs from Ringtone: where calls require some kind of sound to be selected, you can turn off text alarm sounds completely, relying on just vibrations to notify you.
