Apple’s iPhone 12 Nixes The Earpods And Power Adapter

Apple says it’s doing this to be more environmentally friendly.

Apple introduced a 5G-enabled iPhone on Tuesday.

Apple said Tuesday that the iPhone 12 will no longer include wired earbuds or a power adapter, a move that helps the company offset the costs of creating its first 5G-enabled smartphone.

Instead, iPhone users will have to buy EarPods and the USB power adapter separately. Lisa Jackson, who oversees Apple’s environmental, social and policy initiatives, said removing the products from the box will be better for the environment because it cuts down on waste. Apple has said it wants to be 100% carbon neutral in its supply chain and products by 2030. The box for the iPhone 12 will also be smaller and lighter, meaning that Apple can fit 70% more items on a shipping pallet, Jackson said.

“We hope others will follow, making this impact even bigger for our planet,” Jackson said of the changes Apple made to reduce carbon emissions.

Also, many customers already have the EarPods and power adapter. There are more than 700 million EarPods with lightning connectors and 2 billion Apple power adapters out in the world, according to the company. A USB-C to lightning cable will be included with the newest iPhone.

A pair of EarPods and an Apple power adapter each cost $19. There are also other power adapters people can buy to charge their iPhones.

iPhone 11 Xr And Se No Longer Come With Earpods And Power Adapter But Usb

Apple’s new iPhone 12 models don’t come with EarPods or a power adapter in the box in order to save on packaging materials to reduce environmental impact, and following today’s event, Apple has removed the power adapter and EarPods from the box for all other iPhone models as well.

As was rumored this morning, the iPhone 11, XR, and SE will no longer be shipped with power adapters or EarPods, much like the iPhone 12 models. This will allow Apple to use new, slimmer packaging.

All of the iPhone models will, however, come with a USB-C to Lightning cable, an upgrade from the standard USB-A to Lightning cable that used to be included.

Despite rumors that Apple would introduce a Lightning cable with a braided design, that did not happen, and iPhones new and old ship with a standard Apple-designed rubber USB-C to Lightning cable.

Its Not Just The iPhone 12 Range

The thing about these removals is its not just the iPhone 12 range that has to deal with these departures.

In 2020, Apple has removed the earphone and charging brick from all of the iPhones it has available, including the iPhone 11 which is still a part of the range, 2018s iPhone XR which is just below that, and the iPhone SE updated this year, which makes up the entry-level iPhone, so to speak.

Before the iPhone 12 range was launched, these three models came with the earphones and charging brick, but from October onwards, the free charging brick and set of earphones is missing in action, as noted on the Apple website. You can check it out for yourself, but the specs page for the iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and iPhone SE now dont list either the charging brick or the earphones in the section marked In the Box.

Theyre gone, so this issue isnt just something you need to come to grips with for the new iPhones, but rather an initiative of Apples overall.

But is this really a problem? Lets deal with this thing one at a time.

First: earphones.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Apple Lightning Headphones

The most obvious problem we faced when ditching the 3.5mm headphone connection was that our existing headphones would no longer plug straight into our iPhones. Nor could we plug said iPhones straight into our system with a simple aux cord. This affected plenty of other accessories, too.

Apple provides a Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter for£9 but it doesn’t look particularly neat and is easily lost if disconnected and bundled in with your headphones on a road trip.

Listening to music with wired headphones while charging was no longer possible with the iPhone 7, but Apple addressed this issue for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X series by offering Qi-standard wireless charging.

There are plenty of Qi-certified charging pads available on the market, so you don’t have to hope for the ball to start rolling on Apple’s problematic and currently stalled AirPower charging system again, either.

Any active noise-cancelling headphones that draw power from your iPhone could reduce battery life, which hasn’t been the strong point of some of Apple’s most recent handsets.

If your relationship with your iPhone feels stale, like its lost some of its spark, you have an option other than forking over $1,000 for a new one: iOS 13. So Why Isn’t There A Headphone Jack Anymore

Apple reportedly removed the headphone jack because it found that consumers had been purchasing pairs of wireless headphones and the headphone jack, unfortunately, was “an outdated technology,” according to Fortune â even if people still loved it.

While Apple might have found the headphone jack to be outdated, some iPhone users out there haven’t completely converted to using Bluetooth headphones, and you can’t blame them. Some people prefer the cord or don’t have the budget to purchase a brand new pair of headphones.

On the other hand, some might be OK purchasing a pair of AirPods, which are Apple’s rechargeable wireless headphones. AirPods start at $159, connect to your phone automatically, are compatible with Siri, andallow users to charge their phone while listening to music at the same time. But AirPods aren’t your speed, there are other wireless headphones out there.

Sure, the headphone jack or free headphones may never come back to the iPhone. But luckily, there are ways for people with corded earbuds to adapt to this major change.

How To Charge Your New 2020 iPhone

Does the iPhone 11 come with AirPods?

The point of all of this is that a 2020 iPhone has several ways it can be charged.

You can:

  • Plug the included Type C to Lightning port into a Type C port on a laptop and charge it up from your computer
  • Check out a Type C brick from Apple for $29 and charge it up from the wall
  • Plug the Apple Type C Lightning cable into a power brick from a recent MacBook Air or MacBook Pro
  • Buy a wireless charging dock and use wireless charging on the iPhone range

Beyond all of these, you can even get an old Lightning cable and charging brick from an older iPhone, and charge your 2020 iPhone that way. Were not talking about a new port, just a change to the package that comes with the iPhone, so if you have something old, itll still be as good as whats new.

Ultimately, the loss of the charging brick is just an inconvenience, much like the loss of the earphones themselves.

But it is minor, and not really worth worrying about, and if youre upgrading from an iPhone, you can likely deal with both issues without giving much thought to either.

Do Airpods Come With The iPhone 12

With the release of the iPhone 12, a lot of people are planning to upgrade. When you’re upgrading your phone, it’s also a good time to upgrade other key accessories like your headphones. That leads a lot of people to ask: “Do AirPods come with iPhone 12?”

It’s a pretty natural question. After all, the iPhone and AirPods make a fantastic combination and if you’re spending hundreds on a new phone, it makes sense that you might get great wireless headphones included.

Well, we’re sorry to tell you: AirPods are not included with the iPhone 12. No matter what model of the iPhone you’re buyingany model of the iPhone 12 series, or any earlier iPhone modelyou have to buy AirPods separately.

We recommend AirPodsespecially the noise-cancelling AirPods Prothanks to their great audio quality and cool features, but you’ll need to budget an extra couple hundred dollars to buy them.

Can I Still Use My Old Charger With My New iPhone

Nope. If you have one of those small square white chargers from Apple that has an ordinary USB plug on it pictured hereyou won’t be able to use that with the new cable Apple provides with the iPhone 12 models, CNBC notes. The new phones will ship with a USB-C to lightning cable, but previous phones used USB-A to lightning cables.

If you’ve gotten a newer iPad or Mac, they use similar USB-C to lightning cable plugs, so you may already have one at home.

No Free Earphones Isnt A Bad Thing

The loss of EarPods from the iPhone package seems like a frustrating thing for many, because its the first time ever that you cant take out an iPhone and just get to listening to music on it.

Heres the thing, though: as good as the EarPods are, there are better earphones, and you may already own a pair.

If you already own a pair of EarPods from a previous iPhone, those will still work on a 2020 iPhone, so theres no loss there, beyond not getting another free pair to use.

Ideally, wed suggest upgrading to a pair of wireless earphones, but that does cost extra. Then again, if youre considering buying a phone priced this high, a pair of wireless earphones doesnt factor too much into the equation, and so if youre frustrated by the omission of free wired earphones, do yourself a favour and consider a pair of wireless earphones bound to be better, or even a decent pair of wired ones.

It might be a touch convenient, at least initially, but your ears will likely thank you for it, too.

Next up, lets tackle the loss of the charging brick.

The Apple India Online Store Listing Of The iPhone 11 Confirms That Customers Will Only Get A Charging Cable Inside The Box With The Older iPhones

Apple, at the iPhone 12 launch event, announced that it will no longer include a charging adapter and EarPods in the iPhone box. The company confirmed that the move will also be applicable to its older generation iPhones, including the iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and iPhone SE.

Apple said it is removing the accessories to reduce carbon emissions. Removing the accessories from the iPhone 12 box will significantly help reduce the size of the shipping box. It will also help Apple save 2 million metric tons of carbon annually, helping it reach its goal of going carbon neutral by 2030.

Not just the iPhone 12, even older iPhones like the iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and iPhone SE will not ship with the said accessories. Apple will instead only offer a USB Type-C to Lightning fast-charging cable with the iPhone.

The iPhone 12’s Missing Headphones

Apple has also introduced a big change to what accessories it includes with new iPhones. In the past, a new iPhone came with a charging cable, a power adapter to plug into wall outlets, and wired headphones . Not anymore.

Starting with the iPhone 12, you only get the charging cable. The iPhone no longer includes the power adapter or, most importantly, the EarPods headphones.

That’s right: starting with the iPhone 12, you don’t get any headphones with your iPhone.

Apple says this reduces packaging, and thus waste and shipping weight. The company is touting this change as part of its commitment to the environment.

In some ways, this makes sense. It’s true that this will reduce the environmental footprint of the iPhone 12. Also, most people already have headphones of some kind, so the included EarPods would be duplicative, and potentially wasteful.

On the other hand, this does seem like an attempt by Apple to push people towards buying expensive AirPods. AirPods are excellent and well worth the price, but that doesn’t make them any cheaper.

While the iPhone 12 may not include AirPods, it does offer a ton of great features. We’ve broken down all the most important information about the iPhone 12.

What Comes With The iPhone

As the years have passed, Apple has slowly started including less and less accessories with new iPhone purchases. They do this both to cut down on packaging waste, and to encourage consumers to buy accessories separately.

If you buy an iPhone from Apple, all you’ll receive is the iPhone, a charging cable, and a SIM card ejector pin.

You’ll need to buy all of these items separately if you want them. And although any pair of Bluetooth headphones will work with your iPhone, if you want to use non-Apple wired headphones, you’ll likely need to buy a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter, which lets you plug a standard headphone jack into your charging port.

Altogether, the cheapest pair of AirPods , a charging adapter , and a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter will cost around $190, not including tax or shipping.

Important: All this information is true if you’re buying your iPhone and accessories directly from Apple. If you’re buying products from a third-party retailer or reseller, you might receive different prices or accessories.
