iPhone 6: How to Enable / Disable Do Not Disturb Mode

In case you observe that the person that you are trying to Call appears to be busy and not taking Calls during a fixed period of time during the day, it is most likely that this person has set his/her iPhone to Automatically go into Do Not Disturb Mode during a set period of time.

The best approach in such a case would be to figure out the Do Not Disturb period of this person and simply Call at a different time of the day.

As you will agree, there is no use calling someone who does not like to be disturbed during a certain period of time.

You have more chances of conveying your Message or idea to people when they are willing to take Calls and provide you with the time and attention that you deserve.

Quick Tip: Getting Around Do Not Disturb With Emergency Bypass For Calls Texts

On our most recent episode of The Rebound, my co-hosts and I were discussing our usage of iOSs very handy Do Not Disturb feature. One of them mentioned the frustration that it doesnt apply to texts, which reminded me of a lesser known feature that accomplishes many of the same purposes: Emergency Bypass.

Added in iOS 10, Emergency Bypass is a way to ensure that you will always be alerted by a certain contacts phone calls and/or texts, even if the phone is in Do Not Disturb mode and even if the mute switch is engaged. But this feature is a little bit hidden, so heres how to turn it on.

First, open the Contacts or Phone app, and go to the selected contact. Tap the Edit button in the top right corner, then scroll down and tap either the Ringtone field or the Text Tone field.

At the top youll see a slider for Emergency Bypass, which tells you that youll get alerts when that person calls or texts, even when Do Not Disturb is on. Turn that on, tap Done, and youre all set. Youll notice the entry next to the tone will now say Emergency Bypass On instead of listing the alert sound.

If you want to get alerts, but dont like the idea of sounds always going off, you can set the Ringtone or Text Tone to None and just enable a vibration instead. That can be handy if youve got someones ringtone set to Old Car Horn, for example. Not that I would ever do that to anybody.

How To Turn On Do Not Disturb

To turn on Do Not Disturb, open the Settings app, tap Do Not Disturb and toggle the switch to turn it on. Alternatively, you can open Control Center and tap the crescent moon icon. Control Center is just a swipe away, so for most people this is quicker. On newer iOS devices you access Control Center by swiping down from the top right-hand corner. On older devices you swipe up from the home button.

When you enable Do Not Disturb, it will stay on until your turn it off again. However, if you press and hold on the Do Not Disturb icon in Control Center, , you will see options to disable it automatically after one hour, later this evening, when you leave your current location, or even at the end of your current calendar event. The latter is especially useful if you are going in to a meeting at work and want to ensure that your phone stays silent for the duration of the meeting and returns to its normal state when you are done.

Difference Between Silent Mode And Do Not Disturb Mode

The difference between do not disturb iphone and completely putting your iphone on the silent mode is stated below.

  • Silent mode silences every sound on your iPhone except for media. Calls, messages, notifications etc are put to silent until you turn it off. While on do not disturb mode, you can only silence calls and leave others like messages and not to ring.
  • You can silence a particular number on iphone through do not disturb mode, but cant do such on silent mode.
  • On do not disturb mode on iphone, you can schedule a time for it, but cant do such on silent mode.
  • On silent mode, if calls, messages or notifications comes into your iphone, it will blink and shoe light, whilst on do not disturb mode, it doesnt do that until you yourself unlock the phone to see if theres any calls, messages or notifications.
  • One major reason why i like do not disturb on iphone over silent mode is because if youre in the meeting or event where calls is prohibited, on do not disturb mode your phone wont even blink to show light or incoming calls, whilst the case is different if your phone is on silent mode.

On silent mode, your phone will show incoming calls, messages or notifications with light on, but wouldnt ring out.

This is the reason why do not disturb mode iphone is the best especially with the customization than the silent mode.

How To Whitelist Favorites In Do Not Disturb

How to allow individual contacts to bypass Do Not Disturb ...

The Favorites tab in the Phone app is a modern take on the speed-dial. Add a couple of numbers that you frequently contact for a one-tap connection. The Favorites feature also has a couple of other benefits such as the option to add the Favorites widget to your Lock screen.

The Favorites list also integrates directly with the Do Not Disturb feature. To set things up, open the Settings app, go to Do Not Disturb, select Phone, and then tap on Allow Calls From.

Next, switch the setting to Favorites. With this set, anyone who calls you from your Favorites list will be let in.

iOS also has an option in the Do Not Disturb section called Repeated Calls. When you enable this feature, a second call from the same caller within three minutes will be let through.

Messages On Do Not Disturb Mode

There is no way to find out about the Do Not Disturb mode by sending a message. Hence, you do not know, if the receiver has been notified or not, or if the notifications are turned off because of the Do Not Disturb mode. If you are sending an iMessage, it will be displayed as delivered on your iPhone and the contact will see the message when he/she looks at the iPhone.

Taming Imessage With Do Not Disturb

The problem with muting iMessage conversations is that it still shows up on the badges. For muted conversations, I want them to be hidden in a different tab under iMessage and not affect the actual badges. These features would be handy for the conversations that fall into the meme/GIF rat hole, and then you look at your iPhone, and it has 80 unread messages.

Allow An App Notification To Override Do Not Disturb In Ios 15 On iPhone

The Do Not Disturb mode on iPhone is an ideal way to get rid of unwanted interruptions while youre at work, in a movie, or with your family. When DND is enabled, all the calls, messages, and notifications are delivered silently and your iPhones screen doesnt light up either. Do Not Disturb affects all the apps on an iOS device but you can allow calls from your favorite contacts. The alarms are an exception though as they still sound when DND mode is active.

Until iOS 14, there was no way to turn off Do Not Disturb mode for certain apps on iPhone and iPad. It was either all apps or none with DND turned on. This used to be a pesky limitation in case you want to take someone off Do Not Disturb. For instance, when you might want to receive notifications from a few apps like Slack and Zoom, but not all of them.

Fortunately, this changes with Focus on iOS 15 that packs an advanced Do Not Disturb mode. In iOS 15, you can finally allow specific apps to send you notifications during Do Not Disturb. This way you can let an app override Do Not Disturb on your iPhone. In addition to apps, you can allow specific contacts to send your notifications during DND.

Now lets see how you can exclude specific apps from Do Not Disturb in iOS 15 on iPhone.

How To Override Do Not Disturb

Of course, there are times when you will want to override your default Do Not Disturb settings. You may get an emergency call from a family member or your child’s school could call you at work to let you know that they are unwell. For times like this, you can add exceptions that let you receive the alerts you need, even when Do Not Disturb is enabled.

In Settings > Do Not Disturb, you will see an option to silence calls and notifications. Here you can choose to always silence alerts, or only silence them when your iPhone is locked. The idea here is that if your device is unlocked and in use, you are probably okay with receiving calls or notifications. Otherwise, when your device is locked, and not in use, calls and notifications will be silent.

You will also see an option to allow calls from specific people. Tapping this option will let you select from Everyone, No One, or Favorites. If you choose Favorites, your iPhone will allow phone calls from people who are tagged as a Favorite in your Contacts app. To add a contact to your Favorites, open the Contacts app, tap on the contact you need, and then tap “Add to Favorites” at the bottom of the screen. This is perfect for family members and ensures you can still be contacted in emergencies.

Lastly, there is an option in Settings > Do Not Disturb for Repeated Calls. Once enabled, a second call from the same person within three minutes will automatically bypass Do Not Disturb, unless you turn this option off.

How To Use Bedtime & Do Not Disturb

Another place where Do Not Disturb is used is in the Clock app. Apple has a feature called Bedtime, which is used to track your sleep habits and set wake-up alarms. You can set the time you would like to go to bed, as well as the time you would like to wake up. You will get reminders for when to go to bed, and there are a variety of unique, soothing alarms that can be set for specific days of the week.

When Bedtime is enabled, Do Not Disturb is automatically turned on. The lock screen will dim, calls will be silenced, and notifications will go to the Notification Center until your alarm goes off. Learn more about Bedtime in the video below.

    A Customized Do Not Disturb

One of the ways I want to customize DND on iOS and iPadOS is to be able to create my version of it. I want to be able to whitelist certain apps regardless of the state of DND. There are so many different ways Apple could extend how it works. During the week, you might want Slack to be available until 8:00 PM, but on the weekends, not at all. There are countless examples I could give here, but you get the picture.

Right now, the only customization for DND is to allow all calls and calls from favorites. There are so many ways to extend this functionality. Every iPhone and iPad user has different ways they use the device, so allowing users to whitelist apps and further customize how they want to be notified would be an excellent upgrade.

How To Let Someone Bypass Your iPhone Do Not Disturb Settings

how to enable or disable Do Not Disturb while driving Mode ...

Every night before I sleep, I set my phone to Do Not Disturb, one of the many steps I have to take to not stare at my phone late into the evening. It makes it so that I can still receive text messages and calls, but I’m not notified.

My phone doesn’t ring, or vibrate, or even light up. It’s genuinely blissful to not have any notifications for a few hours each day, even if they are the hours before I go to bed and after I wake up. But some important calls still need to come through, like when my roommate is out on a first date, or when a family member is in labor.

Thankfully, it’s easy to enjoy the positive parts of Do Not Disturb while still ensuring those important calls come through.

Use Emergency Bypass To Circumvent Do Not Disturb

Whats the difference between Allow Calls From and Emergency Bypass? In essence, you can use Emergency Bypass to allow both calls and text messages. However, its not as straightforward as Allow Calls From. Theres no mention of Emergency Bypass in the Do Not Disturb settings, you have to find and enable it for individual contacts, and you shouldnt confuse it with the unrelated Emergency Contacts used for Medical ID notifications.

Heres how to enable Emergency Bypass for phone calls or text messages:

  • Open a contact card in either the Contacts app or the Phone app.
  • Tap Edit in the upper-right corner.
  • Tap Ringtone or Text Tone.
  • Enable Emergency Bypass.
  • Tap Done.
  • There is one potentially unexpected caveat. If your Mac is awake and running Messages, it will likely capture text messages before theyre sent to your iPhone. In most situations, thats sensibleyou dont want text message notifications to make sounds on every Apple device you own if youre actively using your Mac. Obviously, if youre away from your Mac, it should be sleeping, but if thats not true for some reason, it could prevent messages from arriving on your iPhone regardless of Emergency Bypass.

Call Once And Call Again Within 3 Minutes

The default Do Not Disturb Mode setting allows Calls to go through if someone Calls Again from the same Phone Number within three minutes of the first Call.

The idea behind this Do Not Disturb Mode setting is likely based on the reasoning that most people are less likely to call immediately for the second time, unless there is an urgent need or an emergency.

Using this knowledge, you should be able to bypass the Do Not Disturb Mode on most iPhones by Calling once and calling back a second time within 3 minutes of your first Call.

This trick will work as long as your Contact is using the default settings of Do Not Disturb Mode, and will not work if your Contact has disabled the option to Allow Repeated Calls on his/her iPhone .

    Get Calls From Individual Contacts

If theres an individual contact who you want to hear from, but they are not on your Favorites list, you can still make an exception to Do Not Disturb on a person-by-person basis.

    • Open Contacts
    • Select the entry for the person you want to bypass DND
    • Tap Edit in the cards upper right corner
    • Scroll down to Ringtone and tap it
    • At the top of the next card, toggle Emergency Bypass to on. That allows calls from that person to bypass Do Not Disturb.
    • Before you tap Done to finish, stop and think for a moment. You might not want to miss a call, but if you dont want to interrupt a meeting, you may want to set a more subtle ringtone or alert sound for that person than your usual ringtone.
    • You can also let texts from an individual bypass DND. Go back to the persons Contact card, tap Edit, and tap Text Tone.
    • Toggle Emergency Bypass to on.
    • Theres one way that Text Tone differs from Ringtone: where calls require some kind of sound to be selected, you can turn off text alarm sounds completely, relying on just vibrations to notify you.
