How To Measure Height With An iPhone 12 Pro & Pro Max
Apple’s Measure app can detect people when using an iPhone 12 Pro or Pro Max and use LiDAR to scan their height, standing or seated, within seconds.
Apple made it possible to measure a persons height whether standing up or sitting down using new technology found only in its iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max smartphones. While this isnt a feature most people will need on a daily basis, it can be occasional useful and is at least a fun feature worth knowing about.
The iPhone 12 was announced near the end of 2020, with several exciting changes. Most obvious were the flat edges, whereas most every other iPhone has had rounded edges. This makes gripping the new iPhone easier and gives better tactile feedback. There were two new sizes introduced as well, with the smallest 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini and the gigantic 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max, the largest from Apple so far. Of course, the newest models are faster, have better screens and feature 5G support. However, the most notable tech upgrade was with the cameras that offer much better low-light photos.

Measuring A Persons Height With Your iPhone
Since the Measure app uses augmented reality, older iPhones and iPads might not be able to take advantage of it. According to Apple, supported devices for the Measure app include:
- iPhone SE or later and iPhone 6s or later
- iPad and iPad Pro
- iPod touch
While some iPhones and iPads can support the use of the app, not all of them can support the measuring of a persons height. This is because with newer iPhones and iPads, Apple introduced the use of LiDAR which is needed for some features of the app to work.
This means that right now, the iPhones and iPads that support the measuring of a persons height through the Measure app include the iPad Pro 12.9-inch , iPad Pro 11-inch , iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Using Apple Shortcuts App
In the above method, you need to download an image first. The process becomes hectic if you have to check the size for many images. An alternative way exists using the Apple Shortcuts app. For that, you need to keep the Shortcuts app installed on your iPhone. In case it isnt installed on your phone, download it from the below link.
Once installed, you need to create a shortcut for file size and run it whenever you want to view the photo size.
Here are the steps in detail:
Step 1: Launch the Shortcuts app on your iPhone or iPad.
Step 2: Tap on Create Shortcut.
Step 3: Using the search bar, look for Get Details of Files. Tap on it.
Step 4: Tap on Choose under Get Details of Files. Select File Size.
Step 5: Again, using the search bar, look for Show notification. Tap on it.
Step 6: Then, tap on the area that says Hello World, and you will see Details of Files at the bottom. Tap on it to add it. Tap on Done.
Step 7: You will be taken to the homescreen of the app, where you will see the newly created shortcut. Tap on the three-dot icon on the shortcut.
Step 8: Inside the shortcut, tap on the on/off toggle icon at the top. Then, enable Show in Share Sheet and hit Done. Tap on Name to give a name to your shortcut. Again, press Done on the screen that opens to save the changes.

How To Measure Height With iPhone 12 Pro
- 1. Open the stock Measure app on any compatible iPhone or iPad.
- 2.Frame the person in the viewfinder. The subject has to appear on the screen from head to toe.
- 3. An instant later, a horizontal line appears above the persons head . The height measurement is displayed below the line in feet or meters, depending on your devices measure units setting.
Trick: If youre getting an unexpected height measurement, you can double-check it. Just turn your iPhone away to reset the result and return to the subject to take the measurement again!
Measure Multiple Dimensions Of An Object
If you’re measuring a couch or other 3D object, you may need to know more than one dimension. The Measure app lets you keep going after your first measurement.
1. With the initial measurement still on your screen , position the dot at one of the points currently in your first line.
2. Tap the plus+ icon.
3. Move your phone so the dot makes a line to the endpoint of your second measurement. Tap the plus+ icon when you get there.
4. Both measurements now appear on your screen. You can add as many measurements as you want. You can also clear your most recent measurement by hitting the back arrow. Tap Clear to remove all the measurements.
5. You can take more photos after you add more dimensions by tapping the white dot on the lower-right side of the screen.

Use iPhone 12 Pro To Measure Someones Height
So, to measure someones height with iPhone 12 Pro or Pro Max, you dont need any additional apps or hardware. Simple follow these steps:
To take a photo that includes the measurement, tap the capture button in the bottom-right corner of the screen. To take the measurement again, turn your iPhone to reset the app, then repeat steps two and three.
Because this trick relies on a LiDAR Scanner, it sadly does not work on other iPhone models. It will, however, work on iPad Pro models that also have a built-in LiDAR Scanner.

Apple has revealed that there is a new function built into the Measure app that enables certain iPhone 12 models to measure the height of someone just using the iPhone’s camera.
If you have an iPhone 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max your iPhone has a built-in LiDAR scanner. The LiDAR scanner can be used to provide better, more realistic Augmented Reality experiences, but the scanner also adds a new function to the iPhone’s Measure app.
The liDAR scanner can be used to measure a person’s height, just by holding the phone in front of the person.
According to Apple, the iPhone’s 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max should even be able to measure a person’s height when the person is sitting in a chair.
The feature is only available for Apple products with a lidar scanner, ie the iPhone 12 Pro series and 2020 iPad Pro models.

To measure a person’s height, you’ll need to use a special app named Measure, made by Apple and available for free. Here are all the steps you need to take.
1. First, from the iOS App Store.
2. Launch the Measure app. Point the viewfinder towards the person you want to measure.
3. After a moment, a line will appear at the top of the persons head.
4. You should see the height measurement just below the white line.
5. To take a photo of the height measurement, tap on the ‘Shutter’ button.
6. At any moment, you can reset the measurement by moving your iPhone away.
How To Take Measurements With The Measure App
If you need to measure an object in the real world, grab your iPhone and follow these steps to use the Measure app:

You can tap the measurement to see it in centimeters or inches. Copy the measurement by choosing Copy.
You can also take a screenshot of the object with the measurements using the shutter button in the bottom-right corner.

Position iPhone so that the person you want to measure appears on the screen from head to toe.
After a moment, a line appears at the top of the persons head , with the height measurement showing just below the line.
To take a photo of the measurement, tap .
To save the photo, tap the screenshot in the lower-left corner, tap Done, then choose Save to Photos or Save to Files.
