If you take photos on one Apple device, like your iPhone, and want to view them on another Apple device, like your iPad, turn on My Photo Stream. Then, the next time your Apple devices are connected to Wi-Fi, photos taken on one gadget will show up on all the others with the same Apple ID.

You can also add individual photos to iCloud Drive. On iOS, go to Settings > > iCloud and toggle iCloud Drive to on. Go to the Photos app, select a picture or video, tap the Send icon, and select Save to Files > iCloud Drive > Save, which will send the image to the Files app.

On a Mac or PC, go to iCloud.com and sign in using your Apple ID. Here, you can click the icon for Photos or iCloud Drive and upload photos and videos.

If you don’t want to pay for more iCloud storage, your options are growing thin. Google Photos has killed off its unlimited storage, but Amazon Photos still offers unlimited photo storage for Prime members.

    How Does Icloud Backup Work

iCloud Backup lets you restore your device from almost anywhere. It also makes upgrading a breeze. When you set up a new iOS device, for example, the system will ask you if you want to restore from an iCloud backup.

There is a downside to iCloud Backup that you need to be aware of. Its very dependent on a specific set of actions to work:

  • Your device needs to be connected to a power supply.
  • Your device needs a Wi-Fi connection .
  • Your device needs to be locked.
  • You need to have enough space in iCloud to store the backup.
  • This last item is the killer. Apple only gives you 5GB of free space with the basic iCloud account. If you have a lot of stuff on your iOS device or in the cloud, its trivially easy to exceed your free 5GB iCloud allowance, which means your backups wont happen unless you pay Apple for additional iCloud space.

If you have both an iPhone and an iPad? Forget about it. You have to pay Apple or you wont have enough space to back up both. iCloud storage ranges from 99 cents per month for 50GB to $9.99 a month for 2TB.

Theres another caveat, too. iCloud Backup doesnt back up everything on your phone. Things that arent backed up include:

As long as you understand the limits of iCloud Backup, its an enormously helpful tool that makes backup, recovery, and upgrading a lot easier.

    Buy More Icloud Storage

This is the part no one likes to do. Basically you can pay Apple 99 cents a month to increase your iCloud storage from 5GB to 50GB. And if you still need more, there are iCloud storage tiers that go as high as 2TB.

I realize that the idea of paying Apple more money on top of what we already spend on devices, accessories and AppleCare doesn’t sit well with a lot of people. But if you lost your iPhone, got a new one to replace it and someone told you that you could download a backup of all of the data from your lost phone for just $12, you’d probably say yes. And that’s how much extra storage on iCloud costs a year.
