How To Measure A Rectangle With The iPhone
If you’ve got an object that’s a neat rectangle, Measure should be able to detect it automatically.
Oh There’s Also A Level
Before I forget, there’s also a level in the new Measure app. It’s the same level that’s been present in the Compass app for the past few years.
Switch to the level by selecting the Level tab along the bottom of the screen, and then place your phone on the surface you want to level. Once the two circles line up and 0 is read in the middle, the interface goes from black and white to green.
Measure Multiple Dimensions Of An Object
If you’re measuring a couch or other 3D object, you may need to know more than one dimension. The Measure app lets you keep going after your first measurement.
1. With the initial measurement still on your screen , position the dot at one of the points currently in your first line.
2. Tap the plus+ icon.
3. Move your phone so the dot makes a line to the endpoint of your second measurement. Tap the plus+ icon when you get there.
4. Both measurements now appear on your screen. You can add as many measurements as you want. You can also clear your most recent measurement by hitting the back arrow. Tap Clear to remove all the measurements.
5. You can take more photos after you add more dimensions by tapping the white dot on the lower-right side of the screen.

The Measure app on iPad Pro 12.9-inch , iPad Pro 11-inch , iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max adds a ruler overlay to line measurements, showing you the object’s dimension in granular increments. Move your iPad Pro close to a line measurement to see the ruler view appear, then tap the shutter button to take a photo so you can use the increments for planning projects.

Measure The Level Of An Object
The apps leveling tool can help you get things done, such as hanging picture frames straight up and checking that the surfaces are flat.
To level a straight object, like a frame hanging on a wall:
1. Faucet Level At the bottom right of the measurement app.
2. Place the edge of your iPhone on the top edge of the frame or something else.
3. The number in the center tells you the slope of the object in degrees.
4. Until the number is zero, hold your phone up and adjust it. The screen will turn half green.
When the object is exactly equal, your screen will be half green and 0 will appear. Devon Delphino.
To level a flat surface, like a table:
1. Faucet Level At the bottom right of the app.
2. Keep your iPhone level.
3. The number in the center tells you the slope of the object in degrees. The two white circles around the measurement will move closer to each other, or farther apart, to help you find the shield in all directions.
4. When you are completely flat, the screen will turn green and 0 will appear in the center of the circle.
When the object is equal, your screen will be completely green and 0 will appear. Devon Delphino.

How To Use The Measure App In Ios 12
Moving into a new space and wondering if your old desk will fit? Most people would suggest you measure the desk with a measuring tape, but if you’re running iOS 12 you don’t need even need that!
The new Measure app allows you to use augmented reality to measure lines using only the back camera of your iPhone. The Measure app works pretty well in a pinch if you find yourself without a tape measure near you.
Take Better Photos In The Dark

Your iPhone and iPad already do this, so you dont need to activate anything to get the benefit. However, if youre putting off taking photos in the dark since you dont trust your devices autofocus, you might want to reconsider if you have a LiDAR-equipped device.
Since LiDAR is capable of judging distances based on how long it takes the light waves to return to the sensor, autofocus in the dark can be better calculated.
RELATED
While standard cameras and non-LiDAR equipped models use contrast and phase detection autofocus which struggle in low light, your LiDAR-equipped model fares much better. Coupled with Night mode you should be better equipped to take photos in the dark.

If you’ve ever needed to measure something in a pinch, you can use your iPhone as a stand-in measuring tape. Apples Measure app is much handier than carrying around a bulky measuring tape and can even help you determine your own height if you have an iPhone 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max. No more worrying if that sofa will fit in your living room or if you’re buying the right size of frame for a new piece of art!

How To Measure With Your iPhone Or Android
It’s surprising how often we need to measure things. Whether it’s tracking the kids’ heights or working out if thing X will fit in space Y, the ability to measure things with our phones is really useful.
Both iOS and Android enable you to point your phone at things to see how big, small, long or far away they are, and they can also do useful things such as help you calculate the area of an object or dimension. In most cases the apps use augmented reality to map what your camera sensor sees, overlaying measurements and lines on whatever you point your phone camera at.
Before we start it’s important to stress the limits of smartphone measuring apps. No matter how good the phone or how clever the app, it wont deliver 100% accuracy: weve found with the iPhone 12 Pro and its built-in LiDAR scanner that the accuracy is just over 95% in most cases.
Like most measuring apps, Apples Measure is not designed for precision measurements: while weve found it to be pretty accurate for measuring physical objects and the odd child, its not as accurate as the laser measures or good old-fashioned tape measures that professional tradespeople use.
If you need accurate measuring for your job or project, a laser measure with Bluetooth connectivity is a better option. For everything else, read on.
