How to Delete Other Storage on Your iPhone

When you browse the web on your iPhone, you create cached data that’s saved in Other Storage. This data is used for autofilled names and passwords as well as URLs. Most of your favorite websites are already pre-loaded in the cached data. This makes browsing the web faster, but over time the accumulated data in Other Storage slows down your iPhone. This method will clear out URLs that you haven’t saved in Bookmarks and any login credentials not saved to your Apple Keychain. Despite some minor inconvenience, it’s good practice to regularly clear your browser cache.

What Is System Data On iPhone

System is the space taken by the operating system on iPhone. This can vary based on your device and model. Generally speaking, iPhone System storage contains 2 types:

System files that are necessary for operating the core system of iPhone and iPad.

Temporary system files that include backups, logs, caches, settings, and other files.

To check your iPhone system storage, you should tap Settings, then select General, and tap iPhone Storage. Then you can see the total iPhone storage and used storage taken by System, Photos, Apps, Media, and Other.

iPhone system files are often invisible to the users, and you cannot access or open them directly like viewing a photo or video.

To clear iPhone system data, you shall move to the next part.

Why Is iPhone Storage Full When I Have Icloud

If your iPhone storage is still full after you turn on iCloud, its likely because its set to keep your original photos on your phone instead of uploading them to iCloud. To check your iCloud Photos settings:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap Photos.
  • Verify or select Optimize iPhone Storage.
  • Organizing your iPhone photos alone might solve your iPhone storage full problem. But if youre already storing photos in the cloud and are still running out of iPhone storage, follow the steps below.

    What Is Other On iPhone

How to delete OTHER from iPhone storage

On the storage page, you have several categories like Apps, Media, Mail, Photos, Messages, etc. Now, anything that does not fit these predefined categories may fall under Other. In iOS 15, it seems to be renamed System Data.

Apple mentions that Other contains non-removable mobile assets. This includes things like Siri voices, dictionaries, offline translation languages, fonts, dictionaries, Spotlight index, local Keychain data, CloudKit Database, logs and caches, and more.

Caches include things like streaming songs and videos data, Safari cache, etc. All these are reflected as Other in system storage.

    Deleting Cached Data On Apps

Apple doesnt make deleting cached data on your apps very easy. The fastest method is to delete and then reinstall apps that take up a lot of space. When you reinstall a deleted app, youll need any relevant login credentials, like names and passwords, so before deleting apps.

  • Open Settings.
  • Tap iPhone Storage.
  • Scroll down and look at your list of apps. Theyll be sorted by how much storage each app is using.
  • Select an app that you want to delete.
  • Select Delete App.
  • You’ll then need to visit the App Store to reinstall the deleted app. If you have a handful of apps that use a lot of data, its worth it to open those apps to see if there are in-app settings that you can enable that will clear the cached data automatically.

    Auto Delete Old Imessages

If you go to Settings > Messages > Message History, you can select how long you wish to keep old conversations on your iPhone. You have three options to choose from:

    • 30 Days
    • 1 Year
    • Forever

Selecting this option to auto-delete your iMessages is a great way to save storage space on your device without having to pay attention to it.

    What Is iPhone ‘other’ Storage

To see how your iPhone’s storage space is used, including the amount of space your other storage is taking up, start the Settings app, then tap General, followed by iPhone Storage.

After a few moments, you’ll see a graph at the top of the screen that illustrates how much room you have left on your phone.

The System Data the catch-all “other” storage category contains miscellaneous files that aren’t included in the main categories. This is where Apple stores a huge array of system files that you, as an end user, should rarely need to manage.

Some of the most important other files include:

    • The Safari browser cache
    • Mail cache and mail attachments
    • Cache files associated with many apps
    • Cache and other system files generated by iOS

Note: More than any other kind of file stored here, it’s the cache files that take up the most space. The iPhone uses caches files to help preload webpages and apps so they launch faster, as well as cachestreaming files like music and video.

    Streaming App Cache Files

Many streaming apps will use a cache to ensure your experience remains smooth, but this can begin to take up space on your device. Streaming apps include options such as Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Prime Video, HBO Max, and more.

How Much Do You Have Left

If you want to see a summary of your storage problems, you can do so on your iPhone in a fairly simple way. In Settings, if you select General then iPhone Storage, you will see a number showing how much storage has been used up.

Below it is a bar that shows how much storage is being used in various ways, divided up into a few categories: Apps, Media, iOS, Photos, and System Data. It’s not a great amount of detail, but it does give you a general idea of whether you’ve overloaded with apps or if it’s something else consuming space.

The operating system will also provide more recommendations on what to do, such as offloading unused apps, which we will get to later.

If you want a more accurate breakdown of your device’s storage, you could get that by hooking it up to your Mac and opening up Finder, or in Windows, viewing the iPhone in iTunes.

A similar bar at the bottom of the screen shows a generalized breakdown of what’s in your storage, with more detail available when you mouse over each section. More importantly, it tells you exactly how much storage is being consumed by each category.

Tip #1: Clear The Browser Cache

Internet browsers like Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc. save things like browsing history, cookies, and other temporary files to make the internet experience smoother and seamless, but all of those extra files take up a lot of space especially if you use the particular browser a lot. To clean up the cache, simply go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data.

Instead, you have to delete individual notes and voice memos to free up Other Storage. Its good to periodically review both your Notes and Voice Memos apps and delete any files you dont need.

Put Icloud Folders In Trash On Mac

iPhone Other Storage: How To Delete It!

The step above applies to macOS as well. However, there is no Files app on Mac. The macOS integrates iCloud directly with default file management.

On a Mac, you can press command + space and open iCloud from the search menu. From there, drag and drop irrelevant folders/files to the trash can on the bottom-right corner.

If you dig through system preference, you will see a similar pattern as iOS. All the default Mac apps use iCloud to backup user data. You can turn off that too. But I wont recommend that. The Mac apps usually take less space and it will make the restore process on new Mac less of a headache.
