Getting a new phone is exciting, but before you tear open your new iPhone 14 box and start playing with all the new features of iOS 16, stop right there. You don’t want to rush the setup process. Instead, take time to make sure your new iPhone 14 is set up to your liking.

Apple has several options for transferring data from iPhone to iPhone, depending on your situation. For instance, you can set it up as brand-new, but you’d be starting from scratch with no settings, messages, photos, apps or accounts transferred over. There’s also the option to move everything from your current phone to the iPhone 14 — even if you’re an Android user.

We’ll explain the four different methods for restoring your phone from a recent backup of your current iPhone.

How To Transfer iPhone Data Via Icloud

The simplest method for preserving your iPhone data is to first learn how to back up an iPhone to iCloud. Go to Settings > Your Name > iCloud. You’ll see how much iCloud storage you’ve used and which apps you’re backing up.

You can see a summary of how much storage space is currently being used by Photos, backups, apps and other data. Scroll down to see a list of apps using iCloud, with the option to toggle each app on or off so they will or won’t appear on your new iPhone automatically.

You only get 5GB of storage for free. Considering most iPhones these days have 64GB of storage or more, that won’t be enough for most people. You can follow our guide on how to free up space on an iPhone, but that likely won’t be enough.

To back up everything on your phone, you’ll probably need to upgrade to a paid plan. It costs $0.99 / £0.79 / AU$1.49 per month for 50GB or $2.99 / £2.49 / AU$4.49 per month for 200GB.

If you don’t mind a small fee, you can sign up, back up your entire phone to iCloud, download the data to your new iPhone, and then cancel iCloud before the month is out. In the iCloud Settings, choose Manage Storage and hit Upgrade to select your paid plan.

Once you’ve settled what you want to transfer to your new iPhone, go to Settings > Your Name > iCloud > iCloud Backup. You’ll find the option at the bottom of the ‘Apps Using iCloud’ section.

If you no longer use your old Apple ID, you can choose to delete it permanently. Once your Apple ID account is deleted, the account details and data associated with your Apple ID will also be permanently deleted from Apple servers. Thats to say, your photos, videos, texts, and other content stored in iCloud will be permanently deleted and you cannot sign in or use iCloud, App Store, iTunes Store, Apple messages, FaceTime calls, and Find My iPhone, etc.

Deleting your Apple ID is a permanent action. Once your account is deleted, Apple cannot reopen or reactivate your account, nor can it recover your data. If you already have your data backed up, then you can go to Apple Data and Privacy website to delete the account.

Even if you’re not looking to immediately transfer data from one iPhone to another, having a backup of your device will give you peace of mind if your iPhone is ever lost or stolen. The bonus is that the data can be safely held in iCloud, ready for whenever you want to transfer it.

    1. To begin, open the Settings app and tap on your name at the top, then tap iCloud.

You can then select Change Storage Plan and choose a paid option for 50GB, 200GB or 2TB. You will have to increase the amount of space you use if you want to back up your whole iPhone to iCloud.

    3. Backups can be made automatically. Just tap iCloud Backup and toggle it on. It’s also possible to immediately back up your iPhone to iCloud. To do this, tap Back Up Now.
