Verizon’s 4G LTE is often faster than T-Mobile’s and AT& T’s low-band 5G. But Verizon’s UWB 5G network has extremely limited coverage, potentially giving Verizon phones a 4G icon in cities where its competitors have 5Gand when you’re choosing a carrier, you’re more likely to want that little 5G icon than to dig into the nuances of network speeds.

Frustratingly, you may not be on the right price plan to even access the new network, and you might not want to level up to a new one. In other words, for you, it may not be the right time for 5G just yet.

Fortunately, Apple has given you control over your phone’s 5G connection. With just a few taps you can disable the new feature, or tailor how and when it’s used to do things like download updates.

5G is still being rolled out in various AT& T service areas so you may either be on the fringe of AT& T reception or in a bubble that 5G can’t get to. As long as you’ve set your phone to 5G or 5G Auto, you should see some connectivity depending on where you are in AT& T’s service area. I’m assuming that you have one of the AT& T Unlimited plans, which is what you need for 5G accessibility. I have no issues with 5G on my iPhone 12 but I find that LTE is much more reliable.

AT& T is having issues with some accounts. About a week ago I lost cellular data and internet connectivity. Internet only worked if WiFi was enabled and connected. Under Cellular -> Cellular Data Options, there was no Voice & Data option so I couldn’t select 5G On, 5G Auto, or LTE.

I had to go to an AT& T Corporate Store and they said it was a SIM issue. I was doubtful but had them install a new SIM and the 5G/LTE options came back. I would try to Reset Network Settings first and if that doesn’t work, go to a Corporate Store or call Support and have them run some Diagnostics.
