The Basics: Hardware Specs And Software

The Max iPhones have a short history, but have gained an extremely enthusiastic following. Some people have seen the value of having a huge iPhone and never looked back. For those people, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is wonderful its yet another huge iPhone, brought up to the modern era of Apple hardware design and features.

If you like the design of the new iPhones, as I do, youll love that you just get more of it in the 12 Pro Max. The proportions of everything at this size are a bit odd when you really look at it, but Im nitpicking this phone is gorgeous. The stainless steel frame and matte glass back feel fantastic and look the part of a super-expensive phone.

If you like the look of the new iPhones, youll love that you just get more of it in the 12 Pro Max.

The whole affair is taken to a new level in this gold color I have, which Ive dubbed the Kardashian Special. The hyper-shiny gold sides are just a lot. Theyre so reflective that you regularly see strong light reflections on tables and walls around you, which is just incredible. Thankfully. the matte glass back has a subtle pearlescent look to it, dulling down the overall effect. But Ive quite enjoyed the phone in the absurdly expensive, but excellent Apple leather case. Those shimmering gold sides still peek out along the edge of the case just a tiny bit, though!

The $929 iPhone 14 Plus is either a big iPhone 14 or a scaled-back iPhone 14 Pro Max, depending on your perspective. With the arrival of the iPhone 14 Plus, Apple now has the most straightforward iPhone lineup in years. There are just two iPhone sizes: one with a 6.1-inch screen and the other with a 6.7-inch display. After you pick a size, you just need to decide between getting a regular iPhone or a Pro model.

The iPhone 14 Plus starts at $929 for a model with 128GB of storage, or $899 if you activate with a carrier. That’s $200 less than the iPhone 14 Pro Max and just $100 more than the regular iPhone 14. But that still makes it out of reach for many people. And that’s disappointing, especially when you consider that the Android landscape is littered with large-screen, rectangular slabs that can be bought at nearly any price.

  • Needs more iOS features for its larger screen
  • Costs less than a 14 Pro Max, but still expensive
  • Lacks a high-refresh-rate display

iPhone 12 Pro Vs iPhone 12 Pro Max: What Should You Buy

Our iPhone 12 Pro vs. iPhone 12 Pro Max comparison will help you decide which phone is best for you

The iPhone 12 Pro vs. iPhone 12 Pro Max face-off is no longer the showdown it was a few months ago. Once, those two phones found themselves at the head of Apple’s iPhone lineup. And while they remain pretty powerful those A14 Bionic chips are nothing to sneeze at they’ve since made way for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Still, if you’re mulling over picking up one of Apple’s older phones, it pays to compare the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, as these devices sport some surprising differences. As we noted in our iPhone 12 Pro review, the regular Pro’s 6.1-inch display makes it easy to use with one hand. And our iPhone 12 Pro Max review shows that going big with a 6.7-inch display has its benefits. But the differences go beyond screen size for these two Pro phones. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max also differ in terms of camera features and especially battery life.

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are harder to come by now that Apple has dropped them from the iPhone lineup in favor of newer iPhone 13 options, it’s still worth looking at how the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max compare.

iPhone 12 Pro Vs iPhone 12 Pro Max: Design

If you want an iPhone that’s easier to use with one hand, the obvious choice is the iPhone 12 Pro. It features a 6.1-inch display in a fairly compact design that measures 5.78 x 2.82 x 0.29 inches and weighs 6.6 ounces.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is a beast of a handset. It packs a 6.7-inch screen into a taller, wider and heavier chassis that comes in at 6.33 x 3.07 x 0.29 inches and 8.03 ounces. This is best for those who want an immersive screen and don’t mind using two hands.

Both the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro feature sleek flat edges and narrower borders, as well as a Ceramic Shield Display that’s designed to offer four times better drop performance than the iPhone 11 series. And the water resistance is great for both models, too, with an IP68 rating that allows them to be submerged in up to 6 meters of water for 30 minutes.

I also like the matte glass back on both phones and the polished stainless steel band that runs along the outside of the handsets .

iPhone 14 Vs iPhone 11 Design

Apple has made some design changes since the iPhone 11’s 2019 release. Those were the last phones from Apple to offer curved edges, as Apple moved to a flat-edge design with the iPhone 12 and hasn’t looked back. That’s a controversial switch for some, though, personally, I find flat edges easier to grip than slippery curved sides.

You’re getting a more durable phone when you upgrade to the iPhone 14 from the iPhone 11. Apple started using Ceramic Shield material with the iPhone 12, and that’s made subsequent devices less prone to damage from drops. Like the iPhone 11, the iPhone 14 has an IP68 water resistance, but these days, the more modern phone can survive a dunk in up to 6 meters of water. The iPhone 11’s water resistance is only good for 2 meters.

The notch remains on the iPhone 14, though it’s smaller than the one found on the iPhone 11. Upgrade to an iPhone 14 Pro model, and the notch goes away entirely, replaced by Apple’s Dynamic Island feature.

I find the colors on the iPhone 11 brighter and more inviting. Apple has gradually gone with more muted hues, making the colors appear lighter on the newer phones. The iPhone 14’s rear camera array features diagonal lenses, and it juts out a little more than iPhone 11’s vertically stacked cameras did.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max Review: Three Outstanding Cameras

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max full review

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini have two cameras each, a wide camera and an ultra-wide. The iPhone 12 Pro has those two plus a telephoto which is the equivalent of a 2x optical zoom of the wide lens. The Pro also has a LiDAR scanner, as mentioned above.

But the Max pulls away from the pack by offering a different camera experience. The ultra-wide is identical on all three phones and the LiDAR scanner here is the same as on the iPhone 12 Pro.

But the wide on the Pro Max uses a different, bigger sensor with pixels measuring 1.7microns, which is big for a camera sensors and means it can pull in light faster. Apple says it means an 87% improvement in image quality. I cant quite get my head around how they work out that percentage but my not-so-scientific response is the cameras here are the best Ive used on an iPhone and absolutely on a par with the very best cameraphones such as the Huawei Mate 40 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

The iPhone camera system is a joy to use: its simple, because Apple has decided to do all the heavy lifting behind the scenes, making decisions and processing images to give them a certain look.

The bigger sensor yields images which are subtly improved rather than explosively different, but seem to deal with tougher challenges that bit better.

iPhone 14 Vs iPhone 11 Display

While camera and processor improvements will get the most attention, don’t forget how much has changed with displays in the three years since the iPhone 11 has come out. While both phones feature 6.1-inch panels, that’s about where the similarities end.

The iPhone 11 still uses an LCD panel, while Apple’s flagship phones shifted entirely to OLED with the iPhone 12. The Super Retina XDR screen on the iPhone 14 offers sharper resolution and promises a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. The iPhone 11 hit 652 nits in our testing.

While the iPhone 11 matches up pretty well against the iPhone 14 in the amount of color it can display â though the OLED panel on the iPhone 14 is better at rendering black â the brightness and sharpness of the newer phone’s screen will make a world of difference.

Don’t Miss: When’s The Next iPhone Update

iPhone 13 Pro Max Vs iPhone 12 Pro Max: Camera

The iPhone 13 Pro Max comes with some noticeable camera changes. For starters the main wide camera has an f/1.5 aperture on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, versus the f/1.8 aperture on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The ultra-wide camera on the 13 Pro Max has an f/1.8 aperture versus its predecessor’s f/2.4 camera, while the telephoto camera on the iPhone 13 Pro Max has 3x optical zoom, versus 2.5x on the 12 Pro Max.

More exciting perhaps is the fact that thanks to the largest sensor ever used in an iPhone, the 13 Pro Maxs main camera now captures up to 2.2x more light for both photos and videos, while the ultra-wide camera sucks in a whopping 92 per cent more light. This means that low-light shots are likely to be noticeably better on the newer iPhone 13 Pro Max compared to the 12 Pro Max. Not only that, but you can also capture macro shots on the 13 Pro Max thanks to the ultra-wide cameras new auto-focus system that lets you capture subjects just 2cm away.

Theres noticeable improvements with video too, with the iPhone 13 Pro Max featuring a new Cinematic Mode that has a rack focus and manual focus feature that adds a more professional quality to your shots. You can, impressively, also change the focus of a previous recording, which could be game-changing for mobile creators, though will probably be an underused feature for the average casual user.

What iPhone Is The Biggest

iPhone 12 Pro Max, Graphite, 128GB (Official Stock)

The biggest iPhone you can buy right now is the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the iPhone 14 Plus they have 6.7in OLED displays, the biggest ever fitted to an iPhone.

However, the biggest iPhone overall, by sheer size, is the iPhone 8 Plus. Because it has a home button and large bezels at the top and bottom, it is both wider and taller than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Apples biggest iPhone is always its Plus model , Max, or Pro Max models on its more modern iPhone releases. For instance, the biggest iPhone in 2019 was the iPhone 11 Pro Max. In 2018, the biggest iPhone was the iPhone XS Max. And in 2021, the biggest iPhone is the iPhone 13 Pro Max which has a 6.7in OLED display. And in 2022, it is the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Ceramic Shield Vs Gorilla Glass

Another notable difference is the screen glass. Apple unveiled its new “ceramic shield” technology with the iPhone 12 lineup, which it says gives the phone a 4x better drop performance than the Gorilla Glass screen on iPhone 11. We haven’t conducted drop or scratch tests for the iPhone 12 Pro or Pro Max, but we put ceramic shield to the test on the baseline iPhone 12 and also drop-tested the iPhone 12 Mini, and it seems virtually indestructible. The iPhone 11 Pro fared incredibly well in our drop testing, though we did find some damaged pixels on its screen.

iPhone 12 Pro Vs iPhone 12 Pro Max: Display

Other than the camera technology, which we will touch on in more detail later, the display size is the biggest differentiator between the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Here are the details you need to know.

The iPhone 12 Pro features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with a resolution of 2532-by-1170 pixels, equating to 460 pixels-per-inch. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 Pro Max features a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR display with a resolution of 2778-by-1284 pixels, equating to a slightly lower 458 pixels-per-inch.

The difference in pixel density between the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max is so minor that users will almost certainly not be able to actually notice it. The other display features are the same between the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max:

  • Super Retina XDR display
  • 800 nits max brightness
  • 1200 nits max brightness

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max displays are both protected by Ceramic Shield technology, which Apple says offers 4x better drop performance than previous iPhones.
