iPhone 14 Pro Max Vs iPhone 13 Pro Max: Camera Specs

iPhone 13 Pro vs. 12 Pro Max camera comparison

The iPhone 13 Pro Max has a trio of 12MP cameras on the back. Those cover the roles of main, ultrawide and 3x telephoto duties. There’s also one more 12MP camera on the front, a selfie snapper with a fixed focus.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max makes a few notable changes. The biggest is that its main camera now has a 48MP sensor, which can shoot at 12MP like before, or in full 48MP ProRAW mode for when you want to play around with shots in post. It also enables a new 2x zoom level by using the center of the sensor for greater flexibility, but it’s also slightly smaller at 1/1.28″ rather than 1/1.7″.

On top of that, the front camera now comes with autofocus and a wider aperture, which makes taking in-focus selfies from different distances much simpler. There’s also a larger ultrawide camera with a wider aperture for increased brightness. Finally, there’s Photonic Engine, Apple’s new photography processing software that aims to provide better colors and texture in photos, particularly in low light.

iPhone 14 Pro Max Vs iPhone 13 Pro Max Design And Display

At first glance, the iPhone 14 Pro Max resembles its predecessor, with flat edges surrounding a 6.7-inch display that takes up much of the phone’s face. The big difference isn’t so big at all, once you notice it — there’s a new pill-shaped cutout in the center of the top of the display that houses the phone’s camera array, replacing the smaller notch from last year’s phones.

Apple has branded this oblong cutout the Dynamic Island, and iOS is being designed to animate around it so things like notifications and status indicators will appear to surround or pop out of the cutout.

Up front the iPhone 14 Pro Max maintains the same 6.7-inch OLED display as its predecessor, but this time it’s designed with an always-on display that’s built to show off your lock screen, which is more customizable than ever in iOS 16.

The graphite, silver and gold colors from the iPhone 13 Pro Max are still available on the new model, as is a new Deep Purple shade — regrettably, Apple appears to have ditched the blue and green color options offered on last year’s model.

The new iPhone 14 Pro Max has the same adaptive refresh rate technology as its predecessor, but while the iPhone 13 Pro Max could only go from 120Hz down to 10Hz, the new iPhone 14 Pro Max can go from 120Hz to as low as 1Hz. That helps the always-on display conserve power, matching a similar feature offered on Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Price: iPhone 13 Line Matches Its Predecessor’s Cost

The iPhone 13 lineup mostly mimics the pricing for the iPhone 12. Although Apple has done away with the 64GB storage option for its standard and Mini options, the pricing of the iPhone 13 have stayed the same. The iPhone 13 Mini starts at $699 for 128GB of storage. The standard iPhone 13 starts at $799, the Pro starts at $999 and Pro Max at $1,099.

The prices for the Pro versions are similar to other high-end smartphone models like the Galaxy S22 Plus and Galaxy S22 Ultra, which cost $1,000 and $1,200, respectively.

Display Size & Technology

The iPhone 13 Pro Max runs the biggest display in Apples iPhone 13 lineup at 6.8in. The iPhone 13s display is 6.1in. Both are OLED displays but the iPhone 13 Pro Max features Apples ProMotion technology which allows for refresh rates up to 120Hz.

The iPhone 13 does not and is locked to a max 60Hz refresh rate. Does this matter? It depends. Higher refresh rates do look better, of course, with smoother transitions and better gaming experiences. But if you havent experienced it before, you wont know what youre missing.

The iPhone 13 Pro Maxs display can dynamically switch between 10Hz and 120Hz refresh rates, depending on what youre doing, and the net effect of this is better-looking video, games, and web browsing. This is a nice bonus and one of the core reasons why the Pro Max costs more.

But, like traveling in first class on a plane, if youve never done it, you dont know what youre missing out on, so most people especially those on a budget would be wise to stick to the iPhone 13. Its display is still very impressive, is OLED-based, and is sharp enough for most things. Gamers, however, will definitely notice the difference in this context, so give it plenty of thought before making a decision.

Promotion On The iPhone 13 Pro Is Stellar

The 13 Pro has a 6.1-inch screen and the 13 Pro Max a 6.7-inch one. In everyday use, the screens are noticeably brighter. The displays have what Apple calls ProMotion, meaning the iPhone, for the first time ever, supports a high refresh rate. Depending on what’s being shown on the screen, the refresh rate switches between 10 and 120Hz. This is a similar approach Samsung took with the Galaxy S21 Ultra. In use, the screen looks stellar. Animations look smooth, graphics crisp and even mundane things like scrolling feeds look better.

iPhone 13 Pro Vs iPhone 13 Pro Max: Whats Different

Price

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max have a fair price gap between them. The starting price for the iPhone 13 Pro is $999 or £949, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max is $1,099 or £1,049. The $100/£100 gap persists through all the higher storage options, too.

The iPhone 13 Pro at 1TB costs $1,499, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max for 1TB is $1,599.

Display size

Unsurprisingly, the two differently sized phones have two differently sized displays. The iPhone 13 Pro uses a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel whereas the iPhone 13 Pro Max uses a 6.7-inch display .

Battery and battery life

Apple has increased the size of all its iPhone 13 batteries this year, but it’s more noticeable on the Pro Max than the Pro. The Pro Max’s battery is 4,373 mAh according to third-party analysis, whereas the Pro’s battery is reportedly 3,125 mAh. In Apple’s own terms, this translates to up to 28 hours of video playback on the iPhone 13 Pro Max and 22 hours on the iPhone 13 Pro.

In our own testing, the difference was narrower, but still in favor of the larger iPhone 13 Pro. The iPhone 13 Pro Max lasted 12 hours and 16 minutes on the Tom’s Guide battery test, which involves continuous web surfing over 5G at 150 nits of screen brightness. The iPhone 13 Pro lasted 11 hours and 48 minutes, which isn’t quite as long, but both phones are good enough to make our best phone battery life list.

The Camera Difference Might Not Be As Big As You Might Think

iPhone 13 Pro vs iPhone 13 Pro Max – Which to choose?

I’ve left talking about the camera differences until the end because, well, it’s probably the most obvious reason to choose the Pro over the non-Pro if the camera is the most important factor when picking a smartphone, you likely already know which new iPhone to go with. The iPhone 14 Pro Max has more cameras, with faster apertures, and the main camera has the biggest sensor that Apple has ever put in an iPhone. It’s just better.

Truth be told, however, the Pro Max’s camera isn’t that much better because the iPhone 14 Plus has a damn good camera system as well. In fact, it’s the same exact main camera as on last year’s iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, so it’s capable of taking excellent everyday photos , so most of your photos are going to look pretty similar.

And while the iPhone 14 Pro Max is capable of taking better low-light photos, largely thanks to its huge sensor, the iPhone 14 Plus takes surprisingly excellent low-light photos they both have Apple’s new Photonic Engine a computational photography feature that takes multiple photos within each photo to improve its colors, textures and details which feels like it could be even more important for low-light photography than the actual larger sensor.

iPhone 13 Vs iPhone 13 Pro: Display

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro feature 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR displays using OLED technology with a resolution of 2532 x 1170 pixels. This equals 460 pixels per inch. The iPhone 13 Pro, however, features a max brightness of 1000 nits, compared to the iPhone 13s at 800 nits. For HDR content, however, both can reach a max brightness of 1200 nits.

There is one major difference between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro displays: ProMotion technology. Exclusive to the iPhone 13 Pro, Apples ProMotion display technology brings adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz to the iPhone for the first time. This means the refresh rate of the iPhone 13 Pros screen can scale between 10Hz and 120Hz depending on what youre doing on your device.

In real-world usage, this should mean things like scrolling and animations are significantly smoother. ProMotion also makes the display more efficient because it can scale all the way down to 10Hz when youre doing something such as reading.

Other display features on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro include:

  • 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio

Six Reasons To Buy The iPhone 14 Plus Over The iPhone 14 Pro Max

For the first time ever, Apple is selling two very big phones. Theres the iPhone 14 Pro Max starting at $1,100, and theres the iPhone 14 Plus for $899, which goes on sale today. Action Mode Is The Star Of The iPhone 14 Pro’s Video Recording

Both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro shoot in 4K at up to 60fps. The video image looks similar when filming on the main rear camera. But the iPhone 14 Pro unlocks additional video tools like Action mode. This is like having a gimbal attached to your phone to give smooth results when moving, except you don’t need any additional hardware — it’s all done in-phone.

Action mode crops in slightly to your image and drops the resolution from 4K to 2.8K. But I think the results are incredibly impressive, especially when compared to the same video shot on the iPhone 13 Pro.

I chased after my puppy, jogged along the beach and took a fast-moving tracking shot in front of a waterfall in the park with Action mode, and the results were remarkable. The iPhone 14 Pro’s video image looks like I was filming with a stabilizer, smoothing out even sudden jerky movements. The iPhone 13 Pro’s video looks much more shaky. You can see those action mode examples in the video below, or at the top of this page.

What Is The Difference Between iPhone 13 Pro And Pro Max

Last year, Apple introduced iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models that feature a long battery life, better cameras, the A15 Bionic chip, and a ProMotion display. But whats the difference between these top-of-the-line options from Apple, and which ones right for you?

The main difference between the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max is that the former has a 6.1-inch display, while the latter has a 6.7-inch display. The Pro Max also has a bigger battery that provides up to 28 hours of video playback. The 13 Pro offers only 22 hours of video playback.

Lets take a closer look at how the two models compare in terms of size, battery life, camera quality, and pricing to understand the similarities and differences between the two. Well also take a look at other differences between the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max so that you make the right choice.

iPhone 13 Pro Max Updates & Overview

The iPhone 13 Pro Max is also Apples most expensive model. Its the one you get if you want the biggest and best display, the best camera, and the best overall battery life. The Pro model is much the same, having the same camera system, but it does have a smaller display and a smaller battery, and a smaller battery means shorter battery life not by a lot, but it is noticeable.

Apple might have struggled to differentiate its Pro models from its standard models at first, but with the iPhone 13 series, the difference between the standard iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 Pro Max is significant as you can see below. All the big differences relate to the camera module, with the Pro you get the best possible performance as well as things like Apples LiDAR sensor.

The Cameras Are Still Great

Other than the Dynamic Island, the biggest difference between the iPhone 14 Pro Max and 14 Plus is the rear camera. On the iPhone 14 Pro Max, you get a 48MP main lens and a 12MP telephoto camera, neither of which are found on the 14 Plus. In fact, the iPhone 14 has a very similar camera to the iPhone 13, with a dual-camera setup that pairs a 12MP wide camera with a 12 MP ultra-wide camera. But that doesnt mean you wont take great photos with the Plus.

Battery Life Is Actually Superior

We all know iPhones get fantastic battery life, but Apple claims the iPhone 14 Plus gets the best battery life of any iPhone ever. Well be running our own tests soon, but early reviews corroborate Apples estimates. Reviewers report battery life of 20-21 hours in video rundown tests, which is about an hour longer than the iPhone 14 Pro Max in similar tests.

In real-world use, youre likely to get multiple days of use of the iPhone 14 Plus. According to The Verges Allison Johnson, a day of moderate use with about two hours of screen-on time and plenty of time away from Wi-Fi only drained the battery by about 25 percent. So if youre upgrading from an iPhone 11 or even an iPhone 13, the improvement will be staggering: youll basically never have to worry about reaching for a charger ever again.
