The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max finally offer iPhone users a screen feature that flagship Android phones have had for quite a long time: higher refresh rates. Apples branding for its screen is Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion, and the important part is the ProMotion, which previously has only been on the iPad Pro.
Historically, the iPhone has been able to refresh its screen at 60Hz , but the new iPhone 13 Pros can vary the refresh rates from as little as 10Hz all the way up to 120Hz. Apple is using a type of OLED display called LTPO panel, technology first seen on Samsung phones. It has a wide dynamic range, can get much brighter, and also uses less power because it can ratchet down the refresh rate.
What all this means practically is that scrolling and animations look much smoother. It also has battery life benefits because if nothings moving on the screen, the screen needs to refresh less often and therefore uses less power.
Apple waited too long to introduce high refresh rate displays on its Pro phones, but it has implemented them well
None of this is news to Android users, but if you havent used a high refresh rate display on a phone before, it can be a little hard to explain why it makes a difference. This is doubly true on iPhones because Apple has gotten away with not putting a high refresh rate screen on an iPhone for so long because iOS is itself a very smooth OS without very much jank in its animations.

The OLED panels mean there’s plenty of punch when it comes to the colour, while blacks are very black.
The iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 12 mini have a 5.4-inch display with a 2340 x 1080 pixel resolution for a pixel density of 476ppi, while the iPhone 14, iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 all have a 6.1-inch display with a 2532 x 1170 pixel resolution for a pixel density of 460ppi.
The iPhone 14 Plus meanwhile, has a 6.7-inch display with a 2778 x 1284 pixel resolution, resulting in a pixel density of 458ppi. It means the mini devices offer the sharpest screens in terms of pixel count but there’s not enough in it between the models that you’d notice.

All of these things are nice to have, and add up to a nice set of upgrades. But they’re unlikely to be used enough to justify a big spend, if you already have the 12 Pro.
If you have an iPhone 11 Pro or older and you want to upgrade because you’ve had it for a couple of years, the price difference between the 12 Pro and the 13 Pro is so minimal that you may as well plump for the 13 Pro. But otherwise, the 13 Pro is a generation that many may choose to skip and wait for the 14 series.

Apple’s iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are equipped with Super Retina XDR displays, which are OLED-based and offer support for the company’s 120Hz variable refresh rate.
The devices have a 6.1-inch OLED display and a 6.7-inch OLED display, respectively. The iPhone 13 Pro sports a 2,532 by 1,170 resolution at 460 pixels per inch , while the iPhone 13 Pro Max has a 2,778 by 1,284 resolution at 458 ppi.
When it comes to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, not a lot has changed on the display front. Both devices still sport a Super Retina XDR display that’s OLED-based. They also retain the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch display sizes, respectively.
The resolutions are higher, but only by a few pixels. The iPhone 14 Pro has a 2,556 by 1,179 resolution, whereas the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 2,796 by 1,290 display.
Despite the resolution changes, the pixel densities are comparable, at 460ppi and 458ppi, respectively.
The most significant differences come down to the shape of the sensor and speakerphone cutout, as well as display capabilities.
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have moved to a new cutout type that incorporates both a pill-shaped cutout and a hole-punch cutout, which theoretically offers more screen real estate. More cleverly, Apple’s using a new Dynamic Island user interface that hides the cutouts with a notification-like feature.

Cameras turned out to be a big point of difference between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12, even if the number of lenses went unchanged from phone to phone. It’s what Apple did with the camera hardware that makes the camera experience completely different on the iPhone 13.
Both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini offer a 12MP main camera that had the biggest sensor ever used in a dual-camera iPhone, at least at the time of release. Apple says that the iPhone 13’s camera lets in 47% more light than the iPhone 12 camera for sharper pictures. These two iPhone 13 models sport the sensor shift optical image stabilization feature Apple added to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the ultrawide lens captures more detail in the darker areas of your images.
Night Mode works on both remaining iPhone 13 Pro cameras.

But in some photo comps, you can see how the iPhone 13 handles low-light photography a little bit better than its predecessor. In the shot of hydrangeas below, the leaves look pinker in the iPhone 13 shot, and there’s brighter leaves surrounding the petals.
One other area worth highlighting is Cinematic mode, a video shooting feature available on all iPhone 13 models. This mode automatically adjusts focus when you’re shooting video, shifting between objects in the foreground and background as your filming warrants. You won’t see a feature like this on the iPhone 12.

The iPhone 12 has received a price cut to $699, but that’s for a 64GB model to start. To get up to the same 128GB of storage, you’ll only save $50 compared to the iPhone 13, and that’s not a worthy tradeoff.
