Whats Different About The Fitness App For iPhone Only Versus iPhone + Apple Watch

In iOS 16+, the Fitness app for iPhone-only users is basically the same as the app for folks that pair an Apple Watch, with a few exceptions.

  • The iPhone-only Fitness app offers basic fitness tracking and shows just your Movement Ring. It does not count your Stand or Exercise Rings. Your movement does count to challenges and awards!
  • The app only counts a few types of exercise, such as walking, running, hiking, climbing, or workouts, also tracked in a third-party app. Bike rides are not automatically tracked, so you still need a third-party app!
  • Third-party app workouts should show up in the Fitness app and help complete the red Move Ring as long as you connect those apps to Apple Health.
  • The third-party app supports means that any workouts tracked with third-party devices, like Garmin watches and trackers, also appear in the Fitness app!
  • When you use the Fitness app without an Apple Watch, it does not show a map of your activity.
  • You also cannot currently add Apple Fitness+ to the Fitness app. This service is reserved for Apple Watch users onlybut Apple just announced that Fitness+ is coming to all iPhone users later this year!!!
  • You must set up the Fitness app first!
  • Just tap open the Fitness app and follow the prompts.
  • Make sure you choose a Daily Move Goal.
  • For adults and children over 13, its the daily calories burned goal for children under 13, its daily active minutes.
  • The key is to take your iPhone with you when you exercise!

Shield Your iPhone Fitness Data From Other Apps Prying Eyes

With the advent of Apples motion coprocessor chip , any apps that you download and grant permission to can use this data to enhance their offerings.

This lets apps like RunKeeper, Carrot Fitness and others both gather fitness data from your iPhone as well as send it to the Health app.

This could raise privacy concerns for some, so being able to decide which apps we allow to access our fitness-tracking data or whether the iPhone tracks these activities at all can be a helpful.

Heres our recipe for getting finer-grained control over your fitness-tracking data.

    Ingredients:

iPhone 12/12 Pro: How to Enable/Disable Reduce Motion

To completely stop the fitness monitoring, open the Settings app, go into the “Privacy” menu, then open “Motion & Fitness.”

Here, you’ll see a list of apps that have requested access to your motion and fitness activity, including the Health app. At the top, you’ll see an option called “Fitness Tracking” turn it off to disable activity tracking. All of the apps with previous access to your data will no longer have access to information such as step count, body motion, stairs climbed, and more.

How To Toggle Fitness & Activity Tracking On Or Off With iPhone

If you like the fitness and motion activity tracking feature on the iPhone, you should have this setting left on. Turning this off will empty the Health app dashboard of tracked fitness data as well.

  • Open the Settings app on iPhone and head to Privacy
  • Scroll down and choose Motion & Fitness
  • Toggle the switch next to Fitness Tracking to the OFF or ON position as desired
  • Exit out of Settings, the change will take effect immediately
  • If you had this off and turned it on, youll still need to enable the appropriate options within Health Dashboard to actually see and monitor your activity data on a meaningful graph.

Keep in mind this disables the tracking feature entirely for all apps on iPhone, not just within Health app. If you turn this off, the pedometer feature and all related fitness activity monitoring functions on iPhone will cease, whether you read that data in Health or a third party app.

Disabling fitness tracking leads to an empty Health app dashboard, but not for erroneous reasons that can be quickly resolved, since the tracking is actually turned off. To reverse that, youd obviously need to turn the feature back on again, but all fitness data and activity prior to turning tracking back on will not be available.

Personally, I recommend keeping this feature turned on and referring to it. This can serves as an easy reminder to move around more, which is particularly important in our modern era of predominately sedentary desk environments for work.

Amongst other things it allows us to better understand the road you are on so we can provide more accurate speed limit data.

It can be enabled when you are setting up GOFAR, but the are some instances in which the Motion & Fitness option is not visible in the iPhone Settings. In this case, you can still turn on Motion & Fitness and complete the setup by following the steps below:

    1. Go to your iPhone Settings and then click Privacy

    2. Select Motion & Fitness.

Check Tutorial Of How To Enable Motion & Fitness Tracking With iPhone

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Enable Motion & Fitness Tracking with iPhone.

Newer iPhones have the ability to track fitness activity and movement and display that data in the Health app and other applications. Fitness tracking is done using an energy efficient motion coprocessor that determines steps, height gain and loss, and distance traveled, and many users like this feature because its an easy way to monitor their activity levels and maybe work towards that goal of more than 10,000 active steps per day.

Fitness tracking is turned on by default in iOS, which allows the iPhone to act as a sort of pedometer, but if for some reason you want to enable the motion detection feature out on your iPhone, you can do that too.

You Can Use The Ios 16 Fitness App For Activity Tracking Without An Apple Watch

What about Motion & Fitness in iPhone when having an Apple Watch ...

The Fitness app on the iPhone has long been available as an activity tracking tool for those who own an Apple Watch, but in iOS 16, Apple wants to make the app an activity tracking option useful even for those who don’t own an Apple Watch.

With iOS 16, you can track your activity using the iPhone motion sensors. The iPhone can keep tabs on steps, distance, and third-party workouts, giving you an estimate of your calories burned.

You can set a daily move goal even if you don’t have an Apple Watch, using the iPhone to track your progress toward reaching the goal. The updated Fitness app is useful for people who don’t have an Apple Watch or another kind of activity tracker and who would like to be more active.

The Fitness app looks almost identical to the Fitness app available to Apple Watch owners, but it does not include a Fitness+ tab as that feature is restricted to the Apple Watch, nor does it have Stand and Exercise rings.
