Display: Only iPhone 13 Pro And Pro Max Have 120hz Refresh Rate

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models both feature a 120Hz display. The number of hertz a phone screen is rated for refers to the number of frames per second it can display, which determines how fast and smooth the screen feels when you’re scrolling through apps and web pages. The standard and Mini models, however, don’t feature the 120Hz display.

Apple seems late to the game, since other high-end smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S22 and OnePlus 9 Pro, already have a 120Hz refresh rate.

What About The iPhone 14

These two iPhones may not look like two entirely different models when you see them side-by-side, but the proof is in the specs. The chart below breaks down the lineup of technical details for both the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro. Pay attention to added features and camera specs especially.

As you can see, the size, storage, and battery life of these two models are roughly the same, but most other specs have changed. The camera seems like the biggest difference at first but added features and the lack of the SIM card tray on the 14 Pro could make a big difference for certain users.

Dynamic Island, Apples cringey name for the expanded pill-shaped notch replacement at the top of the screen, is most definitely a work in progress. At the moment, its relatively simple, showing information about Bluetooth connections, screen and voice recordings, face unlock alerts, and timers. Apples Live Activities feature isnt ready yet, and developers havent been given access either. When these things happen in the near future, Dynamic Islands usefulness will skyrocket.

For now, what you see is potential. The Dynamic Island never feels intrusive, and the functionality it does provide is helpful. Music controls are the best example, as a short tap takes you directly to the app thats playing, and a longer press reveals a set of quick controls. Although these features can be found elsewhere in iOS, its undeniably fast and intuitive to use the Dynamic Island, and it bodes well for the future when more apps make use of it. Its also a seamless thing of beauty, as the software morphs and shifts around the hardware component so slickly that you really cant tell where one begins and the other ends.

iPhone 14 Pro Battery And Charging

The iPhone 14 Pros battery performance hasnt been great, but there are signs of improvement. Initially, the battery was never going to last more than a day, and with moderately hard use , it would be down to less than 30% by early evening and that saw some anxiety start to creep in. Heavy use and a trip to the charger were necessary by this point. This was also mostly connected to Wi-Fi, and sometimes with no gaming just GPS, camera, apps, a short amount of video, and a few hours of streaming music.

Since those dark, early days, the iPhone 14 Pro seems to have settled down into my own use patterns. While the battery isnt going to suddenly last for two days, it has definitely improved. The arrival of iOS 16.0.2 may also have helped optimize the system. Although its not mentioned specifically as a benefit, the very first version of iOS 16 also dramatically cut the battery life on my iPhone 13 Pro suggesting software may be a factor in the relatively poor battery performance.

Apple doesnt supply a charger with the iPhone 14 Pro, but it does put a USB Type-C to Lightning cable in the box. If you own Apples 20-watt charging block, expect the battery to charge to 50% in about 30 minutes. I use Apples 29W charging block, and this takes it to full in just over an hour. Its acceptable performance, but cant match the fast charging times provided by the OnePlus 10T, or many phones from Oppo or Xiaomi. It is consistent with Samsungs phones, though.

Upgrading to the iPhone 14 will get you 5G support, more storage a better main camera with a wider aperture lens, new video shooting options like Action mode and Cinematic mode, a better selfie camera with Night mode and Apple’s Photonic Engine processing, compatibility with Apple’s MagSafe accessories, longer battery life and faster performance. Most of the photography and videography improvements are dramatic changes compared to the iPhone 11. And the longer battery life and additional storage space are welcomed upgrades that you’ll notice on a daily basis.

As previously mentioned, if you go for the 14 Pro instead, you get a new 48-megapixel main camera, a closer 3x optical zoom versus the 11 Pro Max’s 2x zoom, the Dynamic Island instead of the notch and numerous other upgrades like an always-on display.

The bottom line: The iPhone 14 lineup includes enough changes to justify upgrading from the iPhone 11. But if your phone is still in good condition and you’re satisfied with it, install iOS 16 and hold onto it for another year.

Apple said the iPhone 14 Pro Max offers all-day battery life, which translates to 25 hours of video playback. This is great, as it’s the same as the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which sits on our best phone battery life list.

There isn’t any upgrade to the 20W charging found on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, however, which we were hoping for but weren’t optimistic we’d see.

That sounds like bad news for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, but hopefully it won’t be. For one, the battery life of the iPhone 13 Pro Max was already excellent so it’s not like the iPhone 14 has inherited a terrible power unit. And it remains to be seen whether in real-life testing we’ll see improvements with the new models.
