I generally like the iPhone SEs design with one exception. On the plus side, its a very well made handset with the same sturdy glass-and-aluminum design of the iPhone 8. There are three color options for the iPhone SE: black, white and Red. I like how the aluminum band is color matched with the back of the device.
I tried out the black model, which looks and feels sleek but did pick up smudges despite the oleophobic coating. Youll probably want to opt for white if you want to hide fingerprints.
Another plus to the iPhone SE: The whole design is almost comically compact compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max or the new iPhone 12 Pro Max. Its the difference between barely noticing a phone is in your front pocket and having it bulge out. I also didnt feel any discomfort when gaming for over 30 minutes at a time I cant say that about my iPhone 11 Pro Max.
The iPhone SE measures 5.45 x 2.65 x 0.29 inches and weighs 5.22 ounces, which is smaller and narrower than the but about the same weight. The Pixel 3a has a much bigger 5.81-inch edge-to-edge display with a hole punch cutout. However, unlike Google’s budget phone, the iPhone SE 2020 has IP67 water resistance. That means it can be submerged in 1 meter of weather for up to 30 minutes. You also shouldnt have to worry about coffee or soda spills with this phone.

Dont get me wrong, the last few generations of iPhones are nice, but theyre not as sleek as the SE. All the newer versions of the iPhone have protrusions for the camera, and they have sensitive glass back panels that break easily and cost a fortune to replace. The unlocked iPhone SE is unequivocally sturdier. Ive dropped mine many times without a case on, and its fine. Matter of fact, the metal back looks better with scratches, in my opinion. Newer generations of iPhones have bigger screens, which are nice if youre watching a video, but sacrifice the overall functionality of the phone. You can type faster on an unlocked iPhone SE, its easier to use one-handed, and it feels much better in the hand than any of the new iPhones. Have I convinced you to buy it yet? The big change with the iPhone SE 2020 is the upgraded engine from the iPhone 8. While the external design is nigh-on identical, Apple has supercharged the insides, with an improved chipset running the show.
That extra power is designed to allow the new iPhone SE to rival the iPhone 11 range in terms of speed when flipping between apps, and editing snaps and video, and should also improve the camera performance .
Apple looks to have implemented some serious performance improvements while keeping the cost of this phone down, and that impression has been borne out in our experience with the iPhone SE: it matched the iPhone 11 Pro Max for speed when exporting an iMovie, and actually compressed a 1080p four-and-a- half minute video at an almost identical speed.
We compared it to the older iPhone 8 Plus with the same test, and when compressing and exporting a movie down to a smaller size, the iPhone SE 2020 managed the task so much quicker.
If youre going to tax the phone to its limits, then the iPhone 11 Pro handsets are more able to handle graphically intensive tasks and apps – but even when playing more powerful games like Pascals Wager, we didnt feel the new iPhone SE losing any performance. The average user will notice little difference unless intentionally trying to tax the SE 2020.
