Apple’s iPhone 6S and 6S Plus represent meaty upgrades to the 2014 models on which they’re based. The 6S and 6S plus get new force touch technology called 3D Touch, as well as a beefed up 12-megapixel iSight camera that can shoot 4K video. Both phones run on a faster A9 chip, and come in a new color for 2015: rose gold.

How This Review Was Made

Apple gave most reviewers less than 24 hours with the iPhone X before allowing us to talk about it. The first version of this review was based on a single long, intense day of testing the phone, and we updated it a few days later after we tested performance and battery life, did a camera comparison, and generally lived with the iPhone X in a more realistic way. We also took reader questions and tried to answer as many of them as we could.

Theres no headphone jack, which continues to suck on every phone that omits it, but thats the price you pay for a bezel-less screen with a notch at the top. Around the sides, youll find the volume buttons, the mute switch, and the sleep / wake button. The removal of the home button means there are a few new button combinations to remember: pressing the top volume button and the sleep / wake button together takes a screenshot. Holding the sleep button opens Siri. And you turn the phone off by holding either of the volume buttons and the sleep button for several seconds.

Apple gave us the white and silver model to review, and although Apple says the band on the outside is better than surgical-grade stainless steel, mine already has scratches and dings. So I wouldnt expect it to remain flawless if you dont have a case.

Make The Camera See More

Dual 12-megapixel sensors on the rear and a TrueDepth front-facing camera make iPhone X a versatile snapper, but theres more to the technology than meets the eye. iPhone X can also scan QR codes, a task that in the past required a dedicated smartphone app. Just launch the camera, point it at the black-and-white square and, as USA Today notes, iPhone X will immediately perform the preprogrammed action, such as opening a website, contact or launching a video.

And just as iPhone X can make the unseen visible, it can also do the reverse. You can hide snaps that you dont want viewable in your photo library. Simply go to the Photos app, select an image, tap Share then choose Hide. The shot will be stored in a special folder, and will not appear in Moments, Collections and Years views. No judging here, USA Today writes. In fact, Apple wants to help you hide sensitive images, too. Its further proof that iPhone X makes connecting easyand, when needed, can provide some safe distance too.

This translates to a more flexible camera, with more options for framing and cropping, as well as better low-light shots so you can worry less about the lighting and more about capturing the moment.

Apple iPhone X Review: Price And Competition

As discussed previously, this is the first base model iPhone that has cost more than £1,000. Thats for the 64GB version the 256GB version costs £1,149 . That’s an awful lot of money by anyone’s standards as much as a decent ultraportable laptop and there are no other phones that come close in price currently on the market .

The phone that comes the nearest is the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, but even that is £360 less expensive than the iPhone X at around £639 and it comes with a pressure-sensitive stylus. Perhaps the iPhone Xs strongest competition, however, is that which comes from within. The iPhone 8 Plus, although old-fashioned and terribly bulky for a 5.5in phone, is still brilliant and starts at £759. The only practical thing it lacks compared with the iPhone X is Face ID.

Alas, the iPhone Xs spiritual competitor is the Samsung Galaxy S8, which has a near identical screen size and set of features. I say alas, because you can buy a Samsung Galaxy S8 today for the tidy sum of around £475 thats over half the price.

Why Is There Still An iPhone 8

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were shown off alongside the iPhone X at Apples annual fall iPhone event earlier in September, so it isnt abandoning the old naming scheme altogether. The iPhone X is more like a special edition model like the iPhone SE or iPhone 5calthough well see what happens with the iPhone line in the future.

Both feature a 12MP triple-camera system with revamped Ultra Wide and Wide cameras, cinematic mode for video, and macro photography. 4K video can be shot at 24 fps, 25 fps, 30 fps, or 60 fps and HDR video recording with Dolby Vision is available at up to 60 fps. A larger battery means up to 2.5 hours more battery life in the iPhone 13 Pro Max . Pre-orders began Sept. 17, with the phones available in stores on Sept. 24.

The iPhone X Has An Oled Display Why Is This A Big Deal

The iPhone X is Apples first OLED phone, meaning that each pixel directly produces light rather than being backlit like an LCD display. As weve seen on Android phones from Samsung, Google, and others, OLED colors are more vibrant with deeper blacks, greater brightness, and superb contrast. The iPhone Xs display has a resolution of 2436 x 1125, for a shocking pixel density of 458 ppi. Apples calling it Super Retina. Like the iPhone 8, it supports TrueTone to adjust the color temperature to the ambient light around you.

There are also battery benefits. With OLED screens, black pixels dont produce any light, so the phone actually conserves energy by using dark colors. Apple claims the iPhone X will get two additional hours of battery life over the iPhone 8. Obviously, this is something well test in our review, and battery life varies based on how you use your phone, but Apples estimates are usually reliable.

One drawback, however, might be supply. OLED screens are more difficult to manufacture, and Apple is going to need a lot of them. Recent rumors suggest there may be a long wait before the iPhone X gets into customers hands.

The 2020 iPhone SE is the second of its kind, and was loved by those who prefer smaller iPhones. Apple took a few cues from the past with this throwback iPhone. Going Way Beyond Selfies

The 7-megapixel camera that we all use for selfies is now a Selfie Portrait Mode camera. Whats really interesting is that the iPhone X can take Portrait Mode photos from both cameras, but by using two completely different sets of technologies. Portrait mode on the back of the camera relies on both wide and telephoto cameras and some powerful image algorithms to create that pro-looking bokeh effect.

On the front of the iPhone X, the phone creates portrait mode selfies by combining imagery from the 7MP camera with the 3D depth-sensing information collected by the TrueDepth module.

A big selling point for the iPhone 13 is the price point: it starts at the same price as the iPhone 12 did when released, but its base model offers double the storage space. The screen size remains the same at 6.1 inches.

iPhone X Review: Camera

The camera is great, though, and for all the same good reasons as the iPhone 8 Plus. It isnt the quite best phone camera on the market, but it does a mighty fine job of taking reliable photos and crisp, steady 4K 60fps video.

As with the iPhone 8 Plus, the X has two cameras on the rear, both 12 megapixels, both using Sony sensors. One is a wide angle camera, the other a telephoto. The key difference between this and the iPhone 8 Plus is that the telephoto camera has a slightly brighter aperture at f/2.4. Its optically stabilised, too, just like the main f/1.8 camera.

In theory, this means telephoto shots in low light should look cleaner and less noisy in poor light than with the iPhone 8 Plus. A quick glance at the EXIF data, though, shows that, as soon as the light drops, the iPhone Xs camera software simply uses a crop of a shot from the main camera. Its effectively digital zoom and it hits quality. Badly.

The other camera is essentially the same unit as found in the iPhone 8 Plus, and the results from it in good light and bad are the same. It isnt as good as from the Pixel 2, which has the best camera on the market, but its a match for all its other rivals. Exposures are bang on, autofocus is reliable and it handles noise more elegantly than, say, the Huawei Mate 10, whose camera has a brighter aperture, but tends to soften images with over-processing.
