Moment iPhone 12 Case Review Roundup

The Moment Thin Case for iPhone 12 is a value-for-money addition to your iPhone. You can certainly use an iPhone 12 without any cover but it just doesnt give you the confidence to use it all the time.

One of the big things I noticed while testing for the Moment iPhone 12 case review is that a case needs to be solid but flexible enough to feel good. The Moment cases have a good fit and finish and sit plush on the iPhone 12.

Anker 521 Magnetic Power Bank

squirrel_widget_4457792

One of Anker’s best options is this battery pack, which uses magnets to clamp onto your iPhone so that you can use it without any wires.

It’s brilliant, and, often, can be found at half the price of Apple’s own equivalent, so we thoroughly recommend it – especially for those who routinely need to find power on the go and don’t want to lug around a cable to link their phone to a power bank.

Hasnt It Been Around For Years

iPhone 12

It has, but not in iPhones. MagSafe is a proprietary technology, which means Apple invented it and owns the rights to it, so no one can use it without Apples permission.

It was originally found in Apples laptops from 2006 onwards. Then, it used magnets to connect the charging cable to the laptop. If someone tripped over the cable when it was plugged into the wall, it would disconnect from the laptop, rather than yanking it onto the floor and causing damage to the machine.

However, Apple started phasing it out in 2016, replacing it with the more popular USB-C connector for faster charging. The iPhone 12 range marks the first time MagSafe has appeared on an iPhone.

Q: What Should I Consider When Buying A Magsafe Case

First, consider the material used. Most MagSafe cases are made of leather, silicone, polycarbonate, or TPU, each with features that make it superior to the other. However, the material you pick shouldnt compromise protection.

Precise cutouts also play a critical role in your buying decision since you dont want a case that blocks the charging port or speakers. Other essential considerations include thickness, grips, protruding edges, and the available colors.

What Is A Magsafe Case

While a protective case has become an essential accessory to retain the functionality and integrity of an iPhone, conventional cases may not support a smooth connection with MagSafe accessories. For this reason, Apple and some third-party retailers introduced MagSafe compatible cases. These cases are known as MagSafe cases.

These cases have magnets attached to their back. As a result, the iPhone 12 users can snap directly onto a MagSafe case and securely connect with external accessories like the wireless charger.

Apple offers a line of colorful MagSafe cases that suits your personality. These cases are made of leather and silicone, and hence, are lightweight and effective.

Officially you should be able to use MagSafe charging with older iPhones, but it appears that there are also problems using MagSafe with older iPhones. For example, if you use a MagSafe charger with an iPhone 11 charging can take a very long time. Read: You should not use MagSafe with iPhone 11.

How Magsafe Cases Work

iPhone 12 MagSafe Charger Unboxing and Test

MagSafe iPhone cases work by attaching to the back of your iPhone via a built-in magnet. Once attached, they charge your phone wirelessly using the MagSafe charging standard.

MagSafe is a proprietary wireless charging standard developed by Apple. It’s similar to other wireless charging standards like Qi, but it uses magnets instead of inductive coils to transfer power. This allows for a more efficient transfer of power and results in a faster charge time.

Mophie says it delivers 15W of wireless charging for Android devices and 7.5W for iOS devices.

What Sort Of Accessories Support Magsafe

As you may have already guessed, a variety of accessories support MagSafe. From a faster wireless charger to a slim case to a car mount, to a tripod, it has created an ever-evolving ecosystem of accessories.

From an end-user perspective, the MagSafe seems to be a well-timed addition. It has not only enhanced the user-experience but also ushered the smartphone into a new port-free era. Yeah, you got that right!

With Apple showing keen interest in embracing wireless technology, the arrival of a port-free iPhone doesnt seem too far away. The exclusion of wired earphones and power adapters, at a time when MagSafe is touted to be the next big thing, gives ample indication that Apple wants to go all out for the iPhones that are designed to work with only wireless accessories in the future.

Moment iPhone 12 Thin Case Vs Apple Clear Case

The Moment case covers your iPhones original finish, but you can always buy a matching case to avoid that from happening.

The Apple clear case is completely rigid and despite Apples promises, mine yellowed out a bit in the first month of usage. The clear case also misses out on chin protection for the phone, so it cant stand on its own. The Moment case has a better grip, finish, and durability compared to the clear case.

Snakehive is full of neat accessories for your iPhone, and, now, that extends to include MagSafe technology. We particularly like this snap-on wallet, which is able to hold up to three cards and easily snap on and off your phone.

Plus, because it doesn’t need to fit around the phone itself, it’s compatible with any iPhone 12 or iPhone 13 model. You can even get an engraving, as we did, with the wallet itself available in nine different colour combinations.

Myth: The Magsafe Cases Snap On Easily Using Magnetsreality: The Cases Are Just As Hard To Remove As The iPhone 11 Ones

I was somewhat mistaken when I ordered the clear MagSafe case with the ostentatious circular magnetic ring on the back. I was under the impression that the case served two purposes: bringing the MagSafe magnet to the back of the case for a stronger contact and connecting to the phone so the case could be easily removed.

Michael Simon/IDG

Apples new MagSafe clear case isnt very easy to put on.

Only one of those things is true. While the MagSafe adapter connects extremely well to the back of the MagSafe Clear case, which I tested, putting it on is just as difficult as the previous hard silicon case. Taking it off repeatedly leaves the same compression creases in the bottom corners where the case needs to be forcefully pushed away from the phone, and the buttons are just as rigid as with previous clear cases.

As it stands, your best bet is one of the silicone cases, though youll cover up the color you choose for the iPhone 12. If you want a clear case, look for a very thin one, like Totalees line of cases, which are available in frosted clear or fully transparent.

Why Magsafe Is Good For iPhone Charging

MagSafe should ensure that iPhones are properly aligned to their wireless charger when alignment doesnt happen they may not charge. It could spell the beginning of Apples move away from wired charging to wireless charging for the iPhone with a future iPhone having no charging ports at all. This could allow Apple to make iPhones even more waterproof.

Read about why MagSafe will probably mean we will never see an iPhone with USB-C.

The Best Protection For Your iPhone

What is MagSafe on iPhone 12 and 13?

Aside from utility, the main reason why people invest in a phone case is to protect their phone from accidental damage, knocks, or drops. From working on a building site to living in a household with children, it’s unlikely your phone won’t be exposed to minor damage at some point during its lifetime. That is unless you invest in a protective phone case.

Now, while many of you might be tempted to splash out the cash on an expensive iPhone 12 Pro Max case, it’s not always the premium cases that offer the most protection. The Spigen Ultra Hybrid Case is one of the cheapest cases we’ve reviewed, yet, it offers exceptional protection, featuring Air Cushion Technology that’s been military-grade tested.

That’s not to say, however, that official iPhone cases like the Apple Silicone Case with MagSafe aren’t worth investing in. In fact, it’s our premium pick, offering protection against most scratches and drops thanks to its silky silicone exterior and microfibre lining to prevent unwanted damage to your iPhone 12 Pro Max. Better still, you can use MagSafe wireless charging without having to remove this case from your phone.

How Fast Can The Magsafe Charger Charge Your iPhone 12

According to Apple, the MagSafe Charger can charge the iPhone 12 Series with up to 15W of peak power delivery for faster charging. Bear in mind that the actual power delivered to the iPhone will vary based on two important factors wattage of the power adapter and system conditions.

Notably, the MagSafe Charger can deliver only up to 12W power delivery for iPhone 12 mini. Make sure not to place security badges, credit cards or passports between the MagSafe and the iPhone as it may permanently damage the RFID chips and magnetic strips.

Though MagSafe Charger can also charge the older iPhones like iPhone 11 and XS, the charging speed will be significantly lower.

Magsafe: Everything About Apple’s iPhone Charging Technology

MagSafeí iPhone 12

MagSafe is now a universal name that Apple uses for both iPhone and Mac charging. There are MagSafe charging pucks for the iPhone, and MagSafe 3 charging ports and cables for Apple’s Macs. The two MagSafe capabilities aren’t related, but Apple is using the same MagSafe terminology for all of its latest charging technology.

What Is Magsafe For iPhone

Each iPhone in the iPhone 12 series contains a ring of magnets built around a Qi charging coil. As a result you can snap charging accessories onto the iPhone 12. Its similar to how the Apple Watch snaps onto its charger.

Apples MagSafe charger which is sold separately for £39/$39 is a round disc that includes magnets that attach to the magnets inside the iPhone to align automatically.

Because the magnets allow for more precise alignment and due to improved internal components MagSafe allows for faster charging. With MagSafe you can charge at up to 15 watts. When plugged in via the Lightning port iPhones can charge at up to 20 watts.

There is a reason why you only get 15 watts MagSafe charging with some power adapters. The new iPhones still support existing Qi-enabled wireless charging at rates up to 7.5 watts but only matching MagSafe chargers are capable of charging at 15 watts.

Among Apples chargers, only the 20-watt charger that comes with the new iPad Air gives MagSafe the maximum power of 15 watts. Connected directly to a MacBook, you get around 10 watts, and the same with Apples large MacBook charger, which of course can actually do much more. Some third-party chargers can handle up to 12 watts, but we have not found one that provides all 15.
