iPhone Models Considered ‘vintage’ And ‘obsolete’

iPhone 6s Review: Big Things Come in Small Packages | Pocketnow

There have already been a number of iPhone models previously declared “vintage” and “obsolete,” but as per MacRumors, an internal memo reveals the iPhone 6 Plus will be joining the list come December 31. To add, the company has sold tens of millions of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models ever since their launch back in 2015.

According to the story by TheSun.co.uk, the iPhone 6 could be reportedly safe until 2023. In contrast, however, the iPhone 6 Plus isn’t that lucky as the device only has until the end of the year before Apple stops giving it updates.

iPhone 6s Rumours: Ram

TechNews believes that the iPhone 6S will have 2GB or RAM rather than 1GB found in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which could indicate that iOS 9 will have better multitasking features that would be possible thanks to the extra memory.

Back in early March Apple Insider reported that person familiar with Apple’s future product plans would offer 2GB RAM.

We’ve been speculating that this would be the case in several previous versions of Apple’s iPhone, though, so we can’t help but think that it might just be wishful thinking.

This time, the rumour comes from a source who spoke with Apple Insider, who is apparently familiar with Apple’s product plans and provided reliable information in the past.

The good news is that ARM holdings, the company behind the technology that goes into Apple’s processors, has said that its next generation Cortex-A72 processors will have a 3.5x performance boost but be significantly more efficient.

IHS Technologys China director Kevin King claims, according to reports, that his sources indicate that the new iPhone 6s will feature 2GB RAM. However, since reports appeared making this claim the source linked to appears to have disappeared.

You Can Replace The Battery Now

One reason your smartphone doesn’t perform as well as it ages is the battery degrades over time.Think about how little you actually turn your phone off. The battery is running all the time. “As your battery health degrades, so can its ability to deliver peak performance,” reads an explainer on Apple’s website. Unlike the early days of the iPhone, you have the option of replacing your battery. Apple charges $49 to replace batteries on devices ranging from the iPhone 6 to the second-generation iPhone SE. If you own an iPhone X or later, it costs $69. Getting a new battery gives that older iPhone some extra life, and for a lot less than the cost of a new iPhone.

iPhone 4s Features And Functionality

Apple iPhone 6s+ PLUS 16GB 64GB 128GB GSM " Factory ...

The previous few upgrades Apple made to the iPhone were centered on improving its speed, screen, and cameras. The iPhone 4S was upgraded in all of these areas, but it also included some exciting new features that had never before been seen in iPhone history.

Perhaps the most exciting change was the introduction of Siri, Apples voice-controlled assistant that is still in use today and that in many ways introduced the consumer world to the functionality of Artificial Intelligence.

In addition to Siri, Apple also introduced the iCloud, which allowed people to store photos, videos, music, contacts, and much more in the cloud, which freed up space on the device, something they most likely did in response to the complaint that there was never enough storage space on the iPhone. Apple also introduced iMessage to make texting between iPhone users easier, a notifications center, reminders, and Twitter integration, helping the iPhone stay at the top of the smartphone world.

Force Touch May Work On The iPhone 6s And The Plus

Its long been rumored that the next iPhone will sport the same Force Touch functionality as the Apple Watch, but now The Wall Street Journals sources are also saying the feature will be added to the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus.

Even though several sources had all-but confirmed Force Touch for the next iPhones, very little was known about how the feature would be used on the phones. In August, 9to5Mac revealed several possible uses for Force Touch based on reports by individuals who had supposedly used the feature.

  • When using Maps, Force Touch on the destination to start turn-by-turn directions. This will speed up the process and eliminate two steps.
  • In the Music app, using Force Touch on a listed track would bring up a menu with the options to add the song to a playlist or save it for offline listening.
  • Force Touch on some app icons to bring up special functions. For example, pressing the phone icon brings up voicemail. The News icon would bring you to your favorites or the For you tabs.
  • Some of the same Force Touch uses from the new MacBook will work on iPhone, including a press to look up a word, a link press to see a preview of the webpage, and more.

The sources say that Force Touch is nice and consistent across the iPhone. Although the applications of Force Touch dont sound revolutionary, they will serve as speedy little shortcuts across iOS.

Ios 16 Will Reportedly Drop Support For iPhone 6s And First

According to a new report from French site iPhoneSoft, iOS 16 will not support the iPhone 6S or first-gen iPhone SE when it is released in the fall of 2022. The site claims its source is a developer within Apple, and while you should always take these reports with a grain of salt, the change does seem probable. By the fall of 2022, Apple will have gone three years without changing hardware requirements for iOS, and such a move would be long overdue.

Its not uncommon for Apple to enable certain iOS and application features only on newer iPhones, where hardware support is necessary. But the last three iOS releases have all supported the same devices, which is quite a long time and basically unheard of with Android devices.

Apple leads the industry in support for older mobile devices. With iOS 15, Apple supports iPhones all the way back to the iPhone 6S, introduced in 2015. By the fall of 2022 when iOS 16 is released, that model will be seven years old. Cutting off support for it and the first-generation iPhone SE will still mean that iOS 16 supports devices up to six years old, which is about twice what you can expect from most Android phones.

Apple is rumored to release a new iPhone SE in the spring with the same design as the current model, so it youre clinging to your iPhone 6 because you love the size and the home button, youll be able to replace it with a much better model that will receive updates for years to come.

For the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone Pro Max, pre-orders started on November 6, 2020 and they hit stores on November 16, 2020.

iPhone 3gs Carriers And Countries

iPhone 6s Review!

At this point in iPhone history, the iPhone was still only available on AT& T in the United States. Abroad, it was carried by a number of different companies, such as Vodafone, TMobile, O2, Airtel, Movistar, and many more.

With the release of the iPhone 3GS, Apple also expanded the number of countries in which the phone was available, in addition to the countries that were introduced to the iPhone with the release of the 3G, people in the following countries were able to purchase this revolutionary device starting in 2009:

  • Botswana
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Venezuela

Between the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3Gs, Steve Jobs and co. managed to achieve their goal of making the iPhone a truly global device. There are a few notable countries missing from this list, the most prominent being China. But considering the political climate in China and the relative difficulty U.S. companies have selling their products there, this shouldnt come as much of a surprise. But the size and the buying power of the Chinese market has always been too much for a company such as Apple to resist. However, it would be some time before the history of the iPhone would begin in the worlds most populous country. Nevertheless, by the end of 2009, there were iPhones in almost every corner of the globe.

iPhone 7 & 7 Plus: September 16 2016

Apple finally dropped the 16 GB base model option, with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus base models starting at 32 GB of storage and going up to 256 GB. Apple also introduced a new shiny Jet Black color. The iPhone 7 Plus proved to be more popular than previous Plus models due to its new dual camera, which made a significantly improved zoom feature possible, and Portrait mode, a software update that let iPhone 7 Plus users take impressive photos using Depth of Field. Perhaps the most controversial feature of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus was the one Apple removed: the headphone jack. The new iPhones shipped with EarPods that plugged into the Lightning port and an adaptor for traditional headphones. Apple introduced its wireless AirPods at the same event it announced it was eliminating the headphone jack.

iPhone 6 And 6 Plus Sales

To give you an idea of just how much of a tradition the release date of new models had become in iPhone history, consider that Apple sold 10 million phones on the first weekend the phone was available. This beat the record of nine million that had been set with the release of the iPhone 5S and 5C, and it demonstrates just how popular these devices had become.

Why Did Apple Skip Some iPhone Numbers

Did you know that there isn’t an iPhone 2? After Apple created the first generation iPhone, the one that came after that was all about 3G internet connectivity, so the iPhone 2 was skipped. Why did Apple skip iPhone 9? Well, there wasn’t an iPhone 9 because Apple went straight to the iPhone X, a decision made based on it being released in the 10th year after the very first iPhone release. Apple is known for doing things its own way, so frankly we’re not surprised.

We loved learning about the history of the iPhone, and we hope you did too! Be sure to check back in and stay up-to-date with all the newest models as the iPhone continues to evolve and grow. Same Design But A Fourth Color Is Coming

Should I Get The iPhone 6S, Or Wait? It All Comes Down To ...

Apple doesnt typically shake up iPhone design too much with S releases, and most agree that this years changes will be minimal. Now, weve seen the first leaked images of the casing of both the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus.

The 6S Plus photos leaked in mid July on a site called Future Supplier. The photos show a casing that looks much like the current iPhone 6 Plus aluminum body, but the site notes a few changes, such as the speaker and the quality of the aluminum, which it claims is sturdier. According to 9to5Mac, its the same 7000 series aluminum used in the Apple Watch Sport Apple says the alloys 60 percent stronger than standard mixes.

Its been a few years since Apple added the champagne gold color option to its iPhone lineup, and now The Wall Street Journals sources say the next iPhone will come in four color options, but would not say which color would be added to the lineup.

Earlier on, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple will add a new color this year. The iPhone 6S will come in rose gold too, Kuo claims, bringing the color options up to four. Its unknown whether the new option will be real gold like the Apple Watch Edition with a price tag to match or simply mimic the color of the precious metal, reports AppleInsider.

Apple Says Goodbye To The iPhone 6s But I Refuse To

Every year when Apple holds its big iPhone event, theres always one older-generation model that’s removed from Apple Stores.

This year is no exception. Apple has finally put the iPhone 6S out to pasture. Bye-bye, iPhone 6S!

But while Apple may not be selling its 3-year-old iPhone anymore, the existing iPhone 6S devices out in the wild still have a lot of life left in them. So really, the 6S isnt going anywhere anytime soon.

A recent study by analytics company Mixpanel confirmed this notion by suggesting that the iPhone 6S is currently the second most in-use iPhone model in the world. Second only to the iPhone 7, the iPhone 6S is more popular than the iPhone 8 and iPhone X with 13.01 percent of the iPhone market share, according to the study.

Of course, with the release of three brand new iPhones this year, the 6S will certainly see that percentage fall as users decide to upgrade their older phones.

Last year, Mashable explained why the iPhone 6S was the last of the great iPhones. Much like the mid-2015 Macbook Pro, the iPhone 6S is the last model that features the original design that brought its respective product into greatness. Back in 2017, we made the case for keeping your iPhone 6S, and there are a number of reasons why that still holds true today. Here’s a rundown:

What The Original Reviewer Had To Say

Moving on to the slightly more demanding Peacekeeper benchmark, I saw a score of 2,533, which was way in front of every other smartphone weve tested. Its the same story in Geekbench 3, with a single-core score of 1,631 that wipes the floor with everything else, and a multi-core score thats only marginally beaten by the quad-core Qualcomm hardware in the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Given that the iPhone 6 has half the number of cores as the Samsung, its still a seriously impressive showing. And as for the GFXBench T-Rex HD gaming test, theres simply no competition: the only phone capable of beating the iPhone 6s 51fps is the iPhone 6 Plus, which averaged a silky smooth 53fps despite its higher-resolution Full HD screen.

There are times I miss the Home button on my old iPhone 7, primarily because it supported Touch ID, where users can log in to their phone or access certain apps requiring passwords by using their fingerprints. Plus, if you’re not a fan of the larger iPhone screens, it’s easy to hang on to that older iPhone 6S, for example, with its 4.7-inch touchscreen.

Over the past several years, the iPhone has shaped up as a premium offering. It has a premium look and feel to it despite the minimalistic design. That said, iPhones are not exactly known for their ruggedness. A Brazilian filmmaker dropped his iPhone 6s from 300 meters and surprisingly it lived to tell the tale.

iPhone 6s Durability: Gorilla Glass Sapphire Glass And Liquidmetal

There’s some debate about whether the iPhone 6S will be more durable through the use of new materials including sapphire glass and Liquidmetal, but the bankruptcy of Apple’s sapphire partner has put a spanner in the works there, to say the least.

GT Advanced Technologies partnered with Apple to produce sapphire glass at an Apple-owned factory in Arizona that could have been used to manufacture 200 million 5in iPhone displays per year, so without that partnership, the likelihood of sapphire glass being used in an iPhone any time soon is significantly damaged.

Corning, the company behind the durable Gorilla Glass that’s used in Apple’s current iPhones, has revealed a new type of glass, codenamed “Project Phire,” that could be used instead of Sapphire, because it’s apparently just as durable.

“We told you last year that sapphire was great for scratch performance but didn’t fare well when drop,” said Corning Glass president James Clappin. “So we created a product that offers the same superior damage resistance and drop performance of Gorilla Glass 4 with scratch resistance that approaches sapphire.”

Liquidmetal is still on the cards, though. Apple has an exclusive license to the material, but currently only uses it for the SIM-removal tool, despite its desirable qualities such as durability.

iPhone 3g Countries And Networks

As Steve Jobs mentioned when introducing the iPhone 3G, Apple made it a priority to expand its market presence to many more countries. So, when the iPhone 3G hit the market on July 11th, 2008, it was sold in stores in the following countries:

  • Australia
  • Slovakia
  • Uruguay

However, despite expanding to new countries, Apple continued to make use of exclusivity contracts with certain carriers. For example, in the U.S., the iPhone was still only available through one network, AT& T . However, elsewhere in the world, these exclusivity contracts were not as ironclad. The iPhone was sold on multiple networks in counties throughout Europe, and this was a sign of what was to come in the next phases of iPhone history.
