Apple has set its next launch event for today, . The new iPhone is expected to make its debut at this event, possibly alongside Apple Watch Series 8.

Although we now know the probable launch date for the iPhone 14, its release date has yet to be confirmed. But like other aspects of the new iPhone, rumors can provide a few hints. A recent Bloomberg report suggests that the new iPhone will go on sale Sept. 16.

Apple holds its annual fall iPhone event in September almost every year, with the phones being released shortly thereafter, usually the Friday of the following week. Sometimes Apple will stagger release dates for specific models, especially when introducing a new design or size. So it’s possible that the iPhone 14 lineup will have more than one release date.

Here’s what we know:

• Apple tends to hold its events on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Apple’s iPhone 13 event was held on Tuesday, Sept. 14, and this year’s event is slated for today, Wednesday, Sept. 7.
• iPhone release dates are typically a week and a half after Apple’s announcements.
• In general, new iPhones are released on a Friday, around the third week of September. For the iPhone 13, preorders began Sept. 17 and the phones went on sale Sept. 24.

A few years ago, CNET took a deep dive into the Apple event timeline and emerged with a compelling Labor Day hypothesis, which you can read about here. Although our hypothesis was a week off for 2021, this year it aligns with the date of Apple’s scheduled launch event.

iPhone 1: What’s Missing

Then there’s the regular iPhone 14, which is a small update over last year’s iPhone 13. It starts at $799 and has upgraded cameras over the iPhone 13, slightly improved graphics processing and the same car-crash and satellite SOS features in the iPhone 14 Pro. But, it’s missing the following features that you can get in the Pro:

• The cameras are new, but they aren’t as sharp as the ones on the iPhone 14 Pro.
• There’s still no ProMotion display, so scrolling isn’t as smooth as on the Pro.
• The sides are made of aluminum instead of stainless steel.
• The iPhone 14 uses last year’s A15 chip, but with an additional graphics processing core for improved gaming performance.
• There’s no always-on display and no Dynamic Island.

There’s one more member of the lineup this year. The iPhone 14 Plus has the same features as the regular iPhone 14, but the screen size of the Pro Max, and starts at $899. It seems compelling for people who want a bigger screen without shelling out the $1,099, but it won’t be released until Oct. 7, so I haven’t had the chance to review it yet.

First iPhone 14 Orders Beginning To Ship Will Be Ready For Release Day Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the big release day for most of the iPhone 14 series. Those that have been waiting for the new iPhone 14 series, your day is soon arriving. Apple is notifying early buyers that their orders have shipped. Those that were notified will likely start seeing their new iPhone 14 tomorrow, Sept. 16.

All iPhone 14 models went up for preorder last Friday, though there were some issues with Apples online store. The iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will see launch tomorrow. The iPhone 14 Plus will see availability Oct. 7.

iPhone 1: Four New Models

Apple is expected to release four new iPhone models. If Apple’s current naming convention holds up, they will be called the iPhone 14.

This year Apple will likely discontinue the “mini” model with a 4.7-inch screen, according to reports. Instead, Apple could offer two sizes, one with a 6.1-inch screen and one with a 6.7-inch screen, each coming in a standard model and a pricier “Pro” model.

The Pro models are expected to get more upgrades, according to reports from Bloomberg News, TFI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and other analysts and Apple watchers.

Since 2017, iPhones have included a space at the top of the phone’s display with space for Apple’s FaceID system, which includes several sensors and a camera. The Pro models could ditch Apple’s “notch” where it houses the FaceID camera for a slimmer, more streamlined “pill” or “cutout” approach with a smaller space that has to remain blank, leaving room for an even larger display.

The Pro models are also expected to get upgraded A16 processors and cameras. The camera bump is expected to get larger.

Apple could release an always-on screen display for showing notifications, like some Android phones have sported for years. Beta iPhone software released over the summer suggested that Apple may be planning a similar feature because of new widgets that show weather and battery life.

Apple usually drops the price of older models when it releases new ones, giving more price-sensitive consumers an option.

Preorders Start 9 September

BGR independently analysed the past history of Apples iPhone release pattern to agree with Bloombergs report that pegged the release date to 16 September.

According to BGR, Apple always launches new iPhones either on a Tuesday or a Wednesday. Preorders begin on the first Friday from the launch day and releases start exactly a week later on the next Friday.

It is, therefore, expected that preorders for iPhone 14 will start on 9 September.

Forbes reports that the release schedule makes this launch the earliest in over a decade. The report also says that the schedule is a big surprise because it comes in the wake of a global shortage of chips which has already forced Apple to move iPhone 12 and 13 releases to October.

iPhone 14 Review: Ios 16

The iPhone 14 runs iOS 16 by default, and theres a lot to like in this new software update. You can customize the lock screen with widgets, photos and more. Other highlights include the ability to unsend texts and edit them, a replacement for passwords called Passkeys, a new Fitness app and the return of the battery percentage indicator.

Apple Watches With Temperature Sensors Car Crash Detection

Apple Watch Series 8: First up, Apple announced a new Apple Watch: the Series 8. It comes with some cosmetic add-ons like fresh watch faces . But most notable are the Watchs health and safety improvements. Apple says the temperature sensors mean the Series 8 can help wearers track their menstrual cycle, ovulation and fertility.

Apple emphasized the existing privacy features of its period-tracking options, after months of concern about how period-tracking information could be used for criminal cases in states where abortion was recently made illegal or could become illegal. Apple says that data will be end-to-end encrypted and the company wont have the key to decrypt it.

Additional motion sensors let the Watch detect car crashes, Apple says, allowing wearers to get help faster. The device will start at $399.

Apple Watch SE: Apple also updated its Apple Watch SE, an entry-level version of the wearable meant for smartwatch newcomers . It has a larger display compared with the companys aging Series 3 watch, and it packs the same emergency SOS and heart-detection features as some earlier models. Curiously, though, the SE which starts at $249 includes the many of the same guts as the new Series 8, which means it can detect car crashes in action.

Apple Self Service Repair Program

The Self Service Repair program gives customers the ability to repair a broken iPhone from the comfort of their own homes. If a customer doesn’t have an Apple Authorized Service Provider nearby, or they just want to tackle the repair themselves, then the Self Service Repair program acts as an alternative option.

The tools and parts are sold at the same prices Apple pays when ordering them in-store. Some repairs may save the customer a dollar or two usig the program, but it means doing the labor themselves and sacrificing any liability that the Apple Store would take for a botched repair.

The program only exists for iPhone models like the iPhone 13 or iPhone SE for now. It is expected to expand to M-series Macs in the near future.

Whats New With The iPhone 14

So, what exactly is new with the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus?

As heavily rumoured prior to its announcement, Apple has decided to ditch the small-screen iPhone mini form factor for a 6.7in iPhone 14 Plus. It essentially brings the large-screen form factor to the regular iPhone range, allowing consumers to opt for a 6.7in model without having to pay for all the extra features and functionality of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The benefit to the new iPhone 14 Plus, aside from the 6.7in Super Retina XDR display, is improved battery life, with Apple claiming that the iPhone 14 Plus has the longest battery life of any iPhone to date including this years Pro models. If battery life is important, the iPhone 14 Plus could be the one to go for.

That sits alongside the 6.1in iPhone 14, sporting the same high-end Super Retina XDR display tech as last year. Both models cap out at 60Hz though its still a differentiator between the standard and Pro models.

Theres also a boost to the front camera, with a new 12Mp TrueDepth camera offering an improved f/1.9 aperture for low-light shots, but the bigger improvement for many will be the introduction of autofocus. Using a combination of the camera sensor and the Face ID sensor, it can focus on faces in the shot quickly, even in low light.

Will iPhone 14 Get Under

The feature that seems to get kicked down the road the most in Apple rumor world is the return of Touch ID. Early rumors supported the Touch ID’s return coming in the iPhone 12, and when that didn’t happen, speculation turned to the iPhone 13. But even before the iPhone 13 launched , word on the street had shifted again: iPhone 14 would surely be it. Now, that’s looking less likely, too. In late September last year, Kuo predicted that it won’t be until 2023 that the iPhone regains Touch ID technology. That would be the iPhone 15?

When Will The iPhone 15 Be Released

Apple sticks to a pretty firm schedule. Following the 2022 iPhone 14 launch, the likely timeline is the iPhone 15 in 2023, and then the iPhone Flip/Fold in 2025.

Rumors are pointing to a few models: iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Max, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. We’ve also heard other naming schemes like iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Ultra. Nobody’s sure just yet.

iPhone 14 Review: Display

The iPhone 14s 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display remains one of the best screens in thi price range in terms of quality, even though there are no upgrades over last year. The biggest missing feature is a 120Hz refresh rate, which the Galaxy S22 offers, so you dont get the same super smooth scrolling or animation in supported games.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed watching the colorful trailer for Cobra Kai season 5 on the iPhone 14s panel, as it delivered vibrant colors and wide viewing angles. Viewing photos on the iPhone 14 is also a pleasure, as I could make out droplets of water on a flower petal.

In our lab tests, the iPhone 14 registered 117.4% of the sRGB color gamut and 83.1% of the more demanding DCI-P3 color space. The Galaxy S22 reached 110% and 77.9% on the same tests in Natural mode but a higher 210.4/149.1% in Vivid mode.

The iPhone 14 Pros Delta-E accuracy score was a great 0.25 , but the Galaxy S22 scored even better at 0.22.

iPhone 14 Pro Features

As with the iPhone 13 generation, Apple kept features identical across device classes. So, even though there are two sizes of pro iPhones, they have the same feature set. The only things that differentiate the two are size and battery life.

Apple’s usual year-over-year upgrade cycle includes minor changes to a handful of specs and maybe a single tentpole feature. However, for the iPhone 14 Pro lineup, several aspects were updated that affect everyday use.

Water And Dust Resistance

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have an IP68 rating for resistance to water and dust intrusion. The smartphones are able to withstand a depth of up to six meters for up to 30 minutes.

In the IP68 number, the 6 refers to dust resistance , while the 8 pertains to water resistance. IP6x is the highest dust resistance rating that exists. With the IP68 rating, the iPhone 14 can hold up to splashes, rain, and accidental water exposure, but intentional water exposure should be avoided.

Water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions, according to Apple, and can deteriorate over time as a result of normal wear. Apple’s standard warranty does not cover liquid damage, which means it’s best to use caution when it comes to liquid exposure.

Ports And Battery Life

The Lightning port returns for at least one more update, but the “iPhone 15” is rumored to get USB-C. Nothing was changed between generations, as it still fast charges using a 20W adapter.

MagSafe wasn’t changed or updated in any way, either. The magnetic accessory and charging system is backward compatible and still charges at a 15W speed.

Apple says the battery life isn’t affected by the new features. The iPhone 14 Pro is rated for 23 hours of video playback, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max is rated for 29 hours.

Fast charge either device at 20W for 30 minutes to get 50% battery.

iPhone 15 Price And Release Date

Predicting the price of a device that will be released so far in the future isn’t exactly a science, but looking at Apple’s pricing trends can give a hint. Apple didn’t deviate from its usual pricing structure for iPhone 14, and as long as the economy doesn’t drastically change, it could do the same in 2023.

Apple could introduce a new storage tier at 2TB for the iPhone to make space for its increasingly demanding features like ProRes video. That could bring an iPhone’s price dangerously close to $2,000. Also, “iPhone 15 Fold” would be sold as an ultra-premium model and likely start at around $1,499.

Apple is expected to announce its “iPhone 15” lineup in September 2023.
