Camera Rumors: What Apple Might Improve For The iPhone 14

Two of the big rumors we’ve heard about the iPhone 14’s camera setup are actually more about the phone’s design: first, that the chunky camera bump could disappear and second, that a hole-punch front camera could replace the dreaded notch.

Kuo shared insights about the iPhone 14’s potential camera upgrades in an investors note reported on by 9to5Mac just after the iPhone 13 launch. In the note, Kuo predicts a hole-punch front camera, making the iPhone 14 notchless, as well as a 48-megapixel wide rear camera for the Pro and Pro Max models, up from 12 megapixels on previous iPhones.

Kuo’s speculation aligns with a recent research note from Haitong International Securities, reported on by MacRumors. In the note, analyst Jeff Pu hypothesizes the two Pro models will be equipped with a triple lens rear camera system with a 48-megapixel wide lens, and 12-megapixel ultrawide and telephoto lenses. Pu adds the Pro versions of the iPhone 14 could sport 8GB of RAM, as well. In comparison, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have 6GB.

iPhone 13 camera upgrades include a new Cinematic mode, ProRes video and some improvements in zoom capabilities. We had previously reported on rumors that the entire lineup would feature lidar, the iPhone 12 Pro’s standout depth-sensing feature, but lidar ended up making an appearance only on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max after all. It’s possible Apple might expand the feature to its full lineup in 2022 instead, but we haven’t heard anything yet.

Press the Touch ID sensor using Touch ID to unlock your device. To unlock your device using Touch ID without pressing the Touch ID sensor, go to Settings > Accessibility > Home Button and turn on Rest Finger to Open.

Rumors Claiming iPhone 12 Will Have A Touch Id Sensor Under The Screen Suddenly Make A Lot Of Sense

A variety of reports said in the weeks leading to the iPhone 11 event that Apple might bring back Touch ID to the iPhone in the coming years. Mink-Chi Kuo said in early August that Apple will pack both Touch ID and Face ID in 2021 iPhones. Separately, the leaker said Apple will launch an iPhone SE 2 next year, a model that will recycle the iPhone 8 design, fingerprint sensor included. In his most recent note to consumers, the analyst said that one of the 2021 iPhones could ship with an in-display fingerprint sensor, but no Face ID. Apple is hard at work on making TouchID work as an in-display sensor. This would allow Apple to keep FACE ID and also use TouchID on its future iPhone models. Will TouchID return on the iPhone 14? Possibly. The iPhone 14 is said to be a major update over the iPhone 12/iPhone 13 itll be the one with all the big, sweeping changes.

Adding in TouchID to the iPhone 14, especially since no one has quite perfected the under-the-screen fingerprint sensor just yet, would be a really good launch feature for the iPhone 14. Even more so if Apple can add in all the features we usually associate with TouchID.

Benefits of bringing TouchID back? For one, plenty of people myself included prefer using a fingerprint sensor to unlock their phones. Second, TouchID makes authorizing payments a lot quicker. And third, having the ability to add multiple fingerprints to TouchID makes sharing your phone with family and friends a lot easier.

Is TouchID guaranteed to be coming back aboard the iPhone 14? Absolutely not. All we know is that Apple is keen to do it but it will not do it until the implementation is perfectly executed and that could take time. How much time? It could be the iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 before we see it.

A Higher Refresh Rate For Smoother Scrolling

A number of Android phones such as those from Samsung, Google, and OnePlus also have screens that are capable of reaching a higher refresh rate for smoother scrolling.

Phones like the Galaxy S20 lineup, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and OnePlus 8 Pro can increase their screens’ refresh rates up to 120Hz, compared to the 60Hz refresh rate that’s considered average on smartphones.

Why The iPhone 13 Doesn’t Have Touch Id

According to a lot of folks online, not including Touch ID on the iPhone 13 was a huge miss for Apple. Face ID is still a great feature, but in a world where many people wear masks while out in public, having Touch ID would also be incredibly convenient. At home without a mask? Use Face ID. Out and about with a mask? Use Touch ID. It’s a concept that sounds foolish for Apple to ignore. However, there are probably some very good reasons why that’s not how the iPhone 13 turned out.

For one thing, including Touch ID and Face ID would have been an added cost for Apple. Two forms of biometric sensors are more expensive than one, and for a company that values high profit margins, it makes sense that it would avoid an extra expense if it wasn’t necessary. It’s also important to consider how Apple would implement Touch ID on a device like the iPhone 13. If it was placed in the power button, it would require Apple to completely redesign its first-party cases to make the sensor available. The other option would have been hiding it underneath the display, but in-screen fingerprint sensor technology likely isn’t good enough for Apple’s standards.

Is Touchid Coming Back

TouchID debuted on the iPhone 5s it was the most advanced implementation of a fingerprint scanner at the time. Apples competitors followed suit, adding in their own versions on their respective Android phones.

Between 2014 and 2020, fingerprint sensors were one of the most common ways to unlock a smartphone. Around 2018, plenty of Android phone companies started adding in face unlock capabilities. But the fingerprint sensor still stuck around. My Pixel 5 uses a fingerprint sensor, for instance.

Is Apple bringing TouchID back to the iPhone? According to the latest information and leaks, yes, Apple will bring back TouchID to the iPhone. But it is dependent on the company getting TouchID to work as an in-screen sensor and this is proving tricky.

Apple adopted OLED on its iPhone for a variety of reasons. But one of the key reasons what because OLED opened the door for adding in under-screen sensors, like its long-rumored under-the-screen TouchID sensor.

Prior to the launch of the iPhone 13, many leakers claimed that TouchID was indeed returning with the iPhone 13 series. This obviously didnt happen. It was also rumored for the iPhone 12 too. Again, though, the leakers were wrong.

Use Touch Id For Apple Pay

With an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus or later, you can use Touch ID to make Apple Pay purchases in stores, within apps, and on websites in Safari. You can also use Touch ID on your iPhone to complete website purchases from your Mac. If you have an iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 or iPad Mini 3 or later, you can use Touch ID for Apple Pay purchases within apps and on websites in Safari.

So, if these reports are accurate, Touch ID will be integrated into the iPhone 12s display as an additional alternative to Face ID facial recognition.

Its ideal for when you are out and about, especially when wearing a mask. Even if you are wearing a glove, its easy to slip your thumb out and use that on the display to open your iPhone.

But as Apple Insider points out, there is one stumbling block: Chinese display partner BOE is apparently trying to secure a place in Apples supply chain but its not confirmed whether it will be part of the iPhone 12 range.

The Touch ID rumours have been around before, but with the iPhone 12 launch pretty close Im hoping the Touch ID security feature will make its return.

It really couldnt be better timing.

iPhone 14 Size Rumors: Bigger Screens For All

Apple’s last two iPhone lineups have featured the same 6.1-inch size for the base model, going up to 6.7 inches for the Pro Max. According to the same July Nikkei Asian Review report, Apple will stick with these screen sizes for the iPhone 14, nixing the 5.4-inch Mini. Reports showed sluggish sales of the iPhone 12 Mini, so it’s no surprise that Apple is retiring the small phone in 2022.

iPhone 14 Color Rumors: Pale Gold Perhaps

As far as colors go, Prosser’s render colors were not based on any actual information from his sources, except for a pale gold color, which he claims to have seen evidence of himself. However, it’s still early days, and Apple surely has not finalized its color lineup yet for the iPhone 14.

No doubt about it: it saves a lot of time and frustration of having to enter your password each time.

As we reach the halfway point between iPhone generations , the rumour mill is working overtime to churn out all manner of rumours and leaks. Indeed, we’ve heard tons of tantalising tidbits about the so-called iPhone 13, and if the latest is to be believed, it could ship with one of the most requested features of the year.

It is apparently “likely” that the iPhone 13 will include Touch ID, which of course lets users unlock the phone using their fingerprint. As many users have discovered the hard way over the last 12 months, Face ID just doesn’t cut it in a world of face masks and what use is one of the best camera phones if you can’t easily unlock it?

According to a new investor note, as spotted by 9to5Mac, the iPhone 13 is likely to feature Touch ID under the display. First launched with 2013’s iPhone 5S, Touch ID was removed in favour of Face ID for 2017’s iPhone X. But the company probably wasn’t banking on us all wearing face coverings three years later, judging by the makeshift workarounds it’s had to implement to make Face ID actually, you know, work.

Yep, many an iPhone user has been crying out for Touch ID to return since the pandemic began, and it seems Apple might be about to heed their calls. The tech has already made a comeback with the iPad Air 4 last year, so it’s unsurprising to hear it might extend to the iPhone line up again soon.

The Rumors Are Plenty

There is an exciting new rumor saying that the up and coming iPhone 13 might be having a feature that Android phones have had for years. That’s right, the on-screen touch fingerprint sensor. But just how likely is the rumour, though?

According to TechRadar, the rumors of the on-screen touch ID coming to iPhones are legion, and that there isn’t any more question of whether it will happen, but when it will be launched.

Apple has veered off the fingerprint sensor at the revelation of the iPhone X and has opted for facial recognition instead.

The Face ID has been very accurate and reliable for unlocking the phones since, and has secured millions of Apple’s users.

Does the iPhone 13 have TouchID? No, but Apple does have plans on bringing back its fingerprint sensor heres everything we know

The iPhone 13 is now official. As expected, the new iPhones are incremental updates over the iPhone 12, adding in improved battery life, updated cameras, and more power under the hood via Apples A15 CPU.

But if you were expecting TouchID to return to the iPhone 13, youre out of luck. None of Apples iPhone 13 models use TouchID. Instead, it kept the same FACE ID biometric sensor as the iPhone 12 for unlocking and accessing the phone.

The iPhone 13 See How It Compares To The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max

Apple did reduce the size of the notch on the iPhone 13, however it is now about 20% smaller than it is on the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12.

Again, this isnt a big deal and youll probably struggle to notice the difference. But the notch is smaller on the iPhone 13, so if youre not a fan of the notch, at least it is now reducing in size.

iPhone 12 Mini Vs Se: Cameras

Since these are both iPhones, you know youre getting a great camera no matter what you buy. While they both have 12MP main lenses that Apple has been using since the iPhone 6, theyre a bit different in how they snap and process photos. The iPhone 12 mini has the same wide-angle camera as the larger models, so youre getting an f/1.6 aperture for stellar low-light shots along with Night Mode, which isnt available on the SE without turning to a third-party app. The SEs camera has an f/1.8 aperture, so shots will be slightly darker and noisier as well.

The iPhone SE only has one camera, but it still takes portrait shots.

Youre also getting a second 12MP, f/2.4 ultra-wide camera on the iPhone 12 mini that can capture 120-degree field of view, which is also boosted by Night Mode. And while both cameras shoot in 4K at 60fps, only the 12 mini can capture videos in Dolby Vision HDR. Even though the SE has a single camera, it supports portrait mode and Portrait Lighting like the 12 mini, though youre missing out on the AI-powered Deep Fusion and Smart HDR technology that compares images and optimizes photos for the scene and lighting on a granular level.

The front camera is superior on the iPhone 12 mini as well. You get a 12MP camera that can shoot 4K video versus a 7MP HD one on the SE. The iPhone 12 mini also has Night Mode on its front camera, which is lacking on the SE.
