How Do I Adjust The Volume For Dictation

iPhone 12/12 Pro: How to Enable/Disable Speak Auto-Text Typing Feedback

Dictation on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is when you speak into the keyboard and it converts that speech to text. As a result, there isnt a volume level associated with it. So I assume this question refers to a similar iOS feature: Speak Screen.

Speak Screen is an accessibility feature to make your device speak the text on your screen. Its useful for visually-impaired users. It also lets you listen to eBooks like audiobooks.

To adjust the volume for Speak Screen, use the Volume buttons on the side of your device while using the feature. For instance: activate Speak Screen, change the volume, then deactivate Speak Screen.

We hope that covers all your questions and issues for Dictation. If speech-to-text is still not working on your iPhone, try contacting Apple directly for further support. Otherwise, enjoy dictating messages to your friends.

Solution #: Turn Off/on Cellular Or Wi

The speech to text feature requires a stable Internet connection to work perfectly. When your device is not connected to the Internet, the microphone icon turns grey.

So, make sure you have a proper Internet connection.

Open Settingsapp Cellular or Wi-Fi. Then, turn off the switch. Next, restart your iPhone. Once your device has rebooted, turn on cellular or Wi-Fi.

After that, open any app like Messages or Notes and try to use dictation as usual. It should work now.

Using Text To Speech On iPhone And iPad

Getting your device to read selected text is quite simple, heres all you need to do on any iOS or ipadOS version:

  • Tap and hold on any text until the selector tool comes up
  • For a single word, tap Speak, otherwise to speak everything tap on Select All followed by Speak
  • Once speech has started the Speak button turns to Pause, making it easy to halt and resume any spoken text.

A great way to test this feature out yourself is in Safari, like when youre reading this very article. Just select some text and use the Speak tool. Or you can read the entire article if you select all the text on a webpage!

Youll notice the voice is that of Siris, which depending on the version of iOS you have is either a voice you set for Siri, or the same voice of Samantha in Mac OS X which you can add yourself if you havent done so yet for Mac users.

With speech enabled, speaking text is available in just about any app as long as you can select the text. This works perfectly in Safari, Notes, Instapaper, Pocket, and even iBooks if you want stories read to you, though youll have to select all the text again on each page when its finished reading the current page. Preferably a future version of iBooks will just include the speech engine natively and we wont have to do that. Anyway, enjoy!

How To Make Your iPhone Read Text Out Loud

Getting your iPhone to read out text to you is an easy affairyou can do it using nothing but built-in iOS features.

Text-to-speech is a helpful iPhone feature that allows you to hear written text, for those moments where you’re unable to read it. Apple offers a native text-to-speech feature on the iPhone that you can easily activate by following a few simple steps. Third-party apps exist, but they’re rare, partly due to Apple’s restrictive approach to what kind of access third-party developers can have. For most people, it’s likely that the native feature will take care of your needs.

So, here’s how to make your iPhone read text aloud using the built-in features alone.

    Windows 10 Speech Recognition

Because Windows 11 was recently released , I decided to test both the new dictation feature and the Windows 10 version . Both are included in their respective operating systems with nothing additional to install. To begin dictating in either OS, open an app, and on your keyboard, press the Windows logo key + H. A microphone icon and gray box will appear at the top of your screen. Make sure your cursor is in the space where you want to dictate.

When it’s ready for your dictation, it will say Listening. You have about 10 seconds to start talking before the microphone turns off. If that happens, just click it again and wait for Listening to pop up. To stop the dictation, click the microphone icon again or say “stop talking.”

In my test, Windows 10 had only three errors, and all were words that every other app missed as well. Other than that, it provided nearly flawless dictation. By contrast, Windows 11 contained 13 errors for each of the two times I tested it, making Windows 10 the clear winner for accuracy. Each OS includes about three dozen commands for punctuation, symbols, and for completing actions within a document. Windows 10 includes seven dictation languages, but commands are only available in U.S. English. Windows 11 boosts the number of languages recognized to 36 plus a handful of dialects and commands for all these languages.

Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Speech

Using speech instead of typing is a powerful way to save time and work more efficiently, since you can almost certainly dictate a message more quickly than you can type it. Here are some tips for getting the most out of text to speech.

    • Speak clearly and slowly. If you talk quickly or slur words together, the speech translation will be less accurate and you’ll need to waste time editing it after it’s translated.
    • Speak punctuation when you talk. It might sound weird at first, but you can create polished, read-to-send messages by speaking the punctuation as a part of the message, such as by saying, “Hello, how are you question mark I am fine period.”
    • Add entries to the personal dictionary. You can add specialized words you use often, as well as names of people and places Android has trouble understanding. Add to the dictionary by searching for “dictionary” in the Settings app, then tap the + to add to the dictionary.
    • Avoid noisy environments. Youll get better results by dictating in quiet spaces.

How To Use Siri To Read Out Text On An iPhone

How to Adjust the iPhone’s Talk to Text Confirmation Tone Volume

Turning on this feature will give you hands-free access to ask Siri to read text out loud to you. Reading content from your apps will, however, require you to unlock your iPhone first.

Go to Settings> Siri & Search and turn on Siri if the feature isn’t already on. You’ll also have to toggle Allow Siri When Locked on.

These are the voice commands you can currently use to get Siri to read content to you.

    • Read me my emails: Siri will let you know what your three most recent emails are, even those that you’ve already read. She will tell you the sender and the subject line, but won’t read the actual message.
    • Read me my latest email: Siri tell you the sender, subject, and content of the email and will give you the option to reply.
    • Read me my text messages: Siri will only read previously unread text messages and will give you the option to reply.

You can also tap on text from apps or browsers you’re using to select it and then tap on Speak from the menu that appears. Siri will read the selected text out to you, with seemingly no limit on how much text you can select.

As an alternative to using Siri, you can try the Accessibility feature below.

    Communicating In Other Apps

Other apps allow some communication, too. Twitter allows favorites, retweets or replies by voice dictation, and other messaging apps are beginning to allow similar functions. For example, Mail is a built-in app on Apple Watch that allows you to read and delete messages but not reply.

Those are the basics. As the Apple Watch evolves, there are bound to be additional apps and techniques. Good luck!

    How To Use Speak Selection

First of all, you have to select the text you want read out, which can be a little tricky until you get used to it.

If you want to select all of the text, which you would probably want to do, tap on a word, hold it for a second, then release to get an option to select all of the text. If you chose Select All, you will then have an option to Speak the text.

If you only want to select a short piece of text, for example a paragraph on a web site, double-tap on a word, then release to highlight it. You can then ‘drag’ the handles to select a specific section of the text.

Once you have selected the text you will have an option to read it out, using your preferred voice. If you don’t get any sound, make sure you have the volume control on your iPad / iPhone turned up!

How To Turn Off Live Text In Photos App On Ios 15

How to Use the iPhone Text

Though you can disable Live Text just for the camera app, there is no setting to turn off the Live Text feature in Photos on iPhone. Perhaps, if you dont find yourself using the Live Text feature frequently then you can completely disable it. This can be done with a system-wide setting thats hidden in a rather strange placement.

To permanently get rid of Live Text in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, go to Settings > General > Language & Region. Then turn off the toggle button next to Live Text. Doing so will remove Live Text from the Photos app, from Safaris context menu, and even from the Camera app.

  • Best Customizable Dictation Software

In 1990, Dragon Dictate emerged as the first dictation software. Thirty years later, we have Dragon by Nuance, a leader in the industry and a distant cousin of that first iteration. With a variety of software packages and mobile apps for different use cases , Dragon can handle specialized industry vocabulary, and it comes with excellent features, such as the ability to transcribe text from an audio file you upload.

For this test, I used Dragon Anywhere, Nuance’s mobile app, as it’s the only versionamong otherwise expensive packagesavailable with a free trial. It includes lots of features not found in the others, like Words, which lets you add words that would be difficult to recognize and spell out. For example, if you live on Eichhorn St., Dragon will hear this as “I corn.” To avoid this, add it to Words and say the word so you train the software.

It also provides shortcuts. If you wanted to shorten your entire address to one word, go to Auto-Text, give it a name , and type in your address: 1000 Eichhorn St., Davenport, IA 52722 and hit Save. The next time you dictate and say “address,” you’ll get the entire thing. Press the comment bubble icon to see text commands while you’re dictating, or say “What can I say?” and the command menu pops up.

Dragon by Nuance price: $15/month for Dragon Anywhere from $200 to $500 for desktop packages

Dragon by Nuance accuracy: Dragon Anywhere had a 96% accuracy rate on my second test for the 207-word script.

    Using Voice Dictation To Type

Almost anywhere that you can type using the iOS keyboard, you can use dictation for entering information into both iOS and third-party applications. This means that you can compose emails, tweets, text messages, Safari searches, and more using your voice.

When voice dictation is available, a small microphone will appear to the left of the spacebar. Tapping this button will enter you into dictation mode.

In dictation mode, your keyboard will disappear and youll be presented with a view of an amplitude wave that represents your voice. The louder you speak into the microphone, the larger the wave will appear .

    Figure C

The wave gives a nice visual representation of your voice as a feedback mechanism during your dictation.

This view will appear while youre dictating into the text field. It will not automatically stop when youre done speaking. Instead, you must tap the Done button when youre finished. The keyboard will re-appear, and youll see a small activity loading indicator in the text field where the dictation will appear once iOS has finished decoding your speech and turning it into text.

The autocorrection functionality will give you a few options if it thinks the word youve spoken wasnt correctly recognized.

Test The Microphones On Your Device

Its possible speech-to-text isnt working on your iPhone or iPad due to a problem with the microphone. If your device cant hear your speech, it cant convert it to text!

An iPad only has one microphone, but an iPhone has three. And it could be trying to use any one of those when you turn on Dictation. Follow the steps below to test each microphone on your device and determine if any of them are faulty.

  • Open Voice Memos and record a short message. When you listen back, it should be clear and easy to understand.
  • Open the Camera and film a short video message. When you playback the video, it should be clear and easy to understand.
  • Now film a short video message using the selfie or front-facing camera. Again, the video should be clear and easy to understand.
  • If your voice sounds quiet or muffled there could be a problem with the microphone on your device. Make sure it isnt covered by a case or screen protector and clean any dirt using a clean, dry toothbrush.
