How to connect AirPods to your iPhone or Android device – Apple Support

No matter how fancy your home theater setup may be, one day you’ll probably find yourself in need of an audio experience that’s a little bit more… intimate. Maybe you need to catch up on a few episodes of your favorite show or smash out some YouTube yoga without disturbing the other people you live with; maybe the people you live with are disturbing you, and you just want to watch your stories without having to blast it over the sound of violin practice or hammering on the other side of the wall.

If you have an Apple TV and a pair of AirPods, you’re in luck: they’re no exception to Apple’s philosophy of seamless cross-device connection, and it’s super easy to pair your AirPods to an Apple TV for private listening.

And if your AirPods are of the Pro persuasion , you’ll also benefit from not only their active noise cancelling, but also from Apple’s immersive Spatial Audio feature when you’re watching movies and TV not just when you’re listening to music.

One handy thing to know is that if your Apple TV is associated with the same Apple ID as your AirPods, they should connect automatically. But in case that’s not happening for you, or if the Apple TV in your setup is linked to someone else’s account, here’s how to pair your AirPods with your Apple TV.

Connecting The Airpods For The First Time

The easiest and the best way to connect your AirPods for the first time is on an iPhone. If your iPhone is fully updated, follow the instructions:

  • Open your iPhones Home screen.
  • Place the open AirPods case close to your phone.
  • Press Connect on your iPhone when the AirPods setup window pops up.
  • Set up Siri for the AirPods if you havent already. Follow the on-screen instructions. Press Done when complete.
  • Make sure to sign in to iCloud so that your AirPods can automatically connect with all of your iCloud devices .
  • For people who dont own an iPhone, arent registered on iCloud, or use Android devices, here are the connection instructions:

  • Place the open AirPods case next to your device.
  • Hold the connect button at the bottom of the case.
  • Once the case starts flashing white, follow the instructions on the screen to connect the device.
  • Your AirPods should automatically connect whenever theyre near an iOS device you previously paired them with. Also, keep in mind that the AirPods need to be registered to the same Apple ID as the other Apple device.

However, this feature is not available with computers, phones, and tablets of other brands. Maybe Apple allows this in one of the future updates. Perhaps the 3rd-gen AirPods will have this ability.

Clean Your Airpods And Charging Case

If dirt, dust, or other debris gets into your AirPods or Charging Case, it can affect their functionality and cause hardware problems. For example, if there is debris in your Charging Case, your AirPods may not charge properly.

  • Get a soft, lint-free cloth. Don’t use tissue or cloth that will break up inside your devices.
  • Gently wipe your AirPods and Charging Case with the cloth.
  • For more compact debris, you can use an anti-static brush or new toothbrush to clean it out.

    How To Fix Auto

One of the cooler features of the AirPods and AirPods Pro is that when you remove one of the earbuds whatever youre listening to automatically pauses. It accomplishes this via small proximity sensors built into the earbuds. Sometimes it doesnt work perfectly, and it doesnt work with Android or PC.

If you are using iOS and still cant get this feature to work, then there are two possible solutions. The first is to make sure that you have the feature enabled in the first place and the second is to clean your AirPods to make sure the proximity sensor isnt covered in earwax. To make sure that the feature is turned on:

  • Go to the Settings app on your iOS device and click on Bluetooth.
  • From there, navigate to where it says AirPods and click the small blue i icon to the right.
  • Look for where it says Automatic Ear Detection and make sure that it is turned on.
  • If it is turned on and you still cant get it to work, make sure there is nothing blocking the proximity sensor from getting an accurate reading. We have an entire article detailing how to clean the AirPods or AirPods Pro to get rid of debris and gunk that might be blocking the sensor. We suggest doing so fairly often not only for functionality but also for hygienic purposes.

If for some reason your AirPods don’t connect, there’s no reason to worry. There are a few steps you can take to fix this problem:

  • Open up Control Center on your iPhone or iPad by swiping up from the bottom or swiping down from the top-right corner .
  • Make sure you have Bluetooth switched on.
  • Then place both AirPods back in the case and close the lid.

  • If you’re still having problems pairing AirPods, turn the case around and hit the small Setup button on the back of the case. Hold the button until you see the status light flash white, then amber, and then flash white continuously.

  • Dfu Restore Your iPhone

A DFU restore has the potential to fix software problems by completely erasing the code which may be causing your problem. The code is rewritten as if your iPhone is brand new, so the software problem may get solved.

Think of it like a house that has cracks in the foundation. Rather than try and fix the cracks, we are building an entirely new foundation.

If you can, back up your iPhone before completing a DFU restore. Any time you do a restore, it erases everything from your iPhone. However, after the restore is completed, you restore all your backed up data back onto your iPhone.

Watch our DFU restore video walkthrough on YouTube, or follow the steps below:

  • Using a Lightning cable, plug your iPhone into a USB port on your computer.
  • Open iTunes if you have a PC or Mac running Mojave 10.14 or earlier). Open Finder if you have a Mac running Catalina 10.15 or newer. It doesnât matter if your iPhone is on or off.
  • On an iPhone 6s or older, press and hold the Home button and the power button. On an iPhone 7, press and hold the power and volume down button.
  • After 8 seconds, release the Power Button, but continue to hold the power button the volume down button .
  • Let go of the power button or volume down button when your iPhone appears in iTunes or Finder.
  • Your iPhoneâs display will be completely black if youâve successfully entered DFU mode. If itâs not, try again from the beginning.
  • Restore your iPhone using iTunes or Finder.

And even if you connect to them from the Bluetooth menu, it takes a couple of clicks and then a couple of seconds of wait time. What if you could remove all this friction and make it a one-click process? This is where the ToothFairy app comes in.

ToothFairy is a Bluetooth device management tool for your Macs menu bar and costs $4.99. Its worth it just for its one-click integration for AirPods and AirPods Pro.

Once you install the app, youll see a new icon in your menu bar. Right-click it, and choose the Preferences option. Here, select your AirPods and then choose an icon.

Now, youll always see the icon for your AirPods in the menu bar. If the icon is filled in, it means that the AirPods are connected.

And if its not filled in, and you have your AirPods in your ears, simply clicking the button will instantly connect your AirPods to the Mac. From the apps preferences, you can also create a global shortcut to connect to a specific pair of AirPods.
