Solutions To iPhone Charger Port Issues

iPhone Charging Port Repair: Simple Guide for iPhone 7

The way an iPhone charger port issue can be resolved is broadly divided into two categories with multiple approaches. The first category is the Do It Yourself method. Not all iPhone charger port issues are complex some occur because of everyday matters and can be resolved using some basic tools and techniques.

On the other hand, some issues like port damage, breakage, overheating, and others require the attention of qualified engineers. At this point, those with Apple Care+ have the upper hand and can get the charger port repaired for free or with small expenses.

The first thing you should do is understand the nature of the issue, to determine whether your phone needs an experts attention or if it is something you can resolve on your own. How do you deduce if a charger port problem is a DIY-fix issue or a more complicated one?

The first step is to check for:

  • Debris and dirt
  • Broken metal stripes
  • Other noticeable changes

Once youve identified the type of charger port problem you have, depending on the nature of the issue, the correct solution can then be applied.

For Dust Dirt And Debris

  • Scrape the inside of the port with a plastic or wooden toothpick, an unused nylon bristled makeup brush, or something similar
  • Removes most of your fat clumps of lint, debris, and dust
  • If possible, shave a wooden toothpick down slightly with a sharp knife so that its very thin
  • Check deep inside the port with a flashlight and magnifying glass if available
  • Look for any dirt caked in the corners and in the bottom
  • If corners or bottom are still dirty, use a paperclip or other strong probe and carefully scrape the dirt to dislodge and remove it
  • Spray your lightning port with some canned compressed air
  • Use a Q-Tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and insert it into the port
  • Gently clean inside the port
  • Place some surgical gauze or a piece of a screen cleaning wipe over the port and pushed it in using the lightning cable head
  • The gauze or wipe traps the dirt and grime clogging the ports insides
  • Remember always to allow a minute or two for the port to dry, when using canned air or rubbing alcohol. These are designed to evaporate quickly, but best practice is to wait just a bit before returning to use.

After cleaning is complete, power on your iDevice, plug in your lightning cable and see if your device starts to charge.

    Know This Before You Begin

One of the most common questions Apple techs receive when an iPhone wont charge is this: If my iPhone wont charge, do I need a new battery?

In spite of what youll read on many websites, the answer to this question is no! Theres a lot of misinformation out there, and that was one of the main reasons I wanted to write this article.

As a former Apple tech with experience working with hundreds of iPhones that wouldnt charge, I can tell you that replacing a battery is the absolute wrong thing to do.

The truth is that most of the time, its your iPhones software not hardware thats preventing your iPhone from charging. If your iPhone wont charge, 99% of the time, replacing the battery will have zero effect!

And, if there is a hardware problem, its much more likely that the issue is with the charging port itself but were not there yet.

    Look Over Your Lightning Cable

If your Lightning cable is damaged, this could very well be the reason why your iPhone 12 won’t charge. Take a close look along the length of your Lightning cable, paying special attention to either end. If you see any fraying, exposed wires, or other visible damage, this might be the problem.

It might also help to switch up the USB charging port that you typically charge with. If you usually charge from a specific port on your computer, try a different USB port instead. If you normally use a wall charger, try plugging into your computer and see if that has a different result.

Grab another Lightning cable or borrow one from a friend. If your iPhone 12 charges with one Lightning cable and not another, it was probably the cable keeping your phone from charging the whole time.

What To Do If iPhone Shows ‘liquid Detected In Lightning Connector’ Error

How to fix iPhone 5s Charging Port in 5 minutes

A mechanism is inbuilt in the iPhone software that detects moisture in the lightning port of the device. This function is beneficial as the charging and headphone connection shares the same port.

Since the phone internals is vulnerable to liquid, any system is built to inform the user in emergencies. But, the problem arises when it shows the same message even when the phone is dry as desert sand.

The problem is shared among newer models like iPhone X, iPhone SE2, and iPhone 12. The message pops up without any reason and disrupts the easy surfing of the device. No particular case got pinpointed as the root cause after thousands of reports against the bug. So, people began searching for ideas or tricks to get past the message.

What Is Included In The Repair

If you do choose a third-party retailer, they will often include a warranty, which, depending on the company, can range anywhere from three months to as long as a year.

Most third-party companies will use third-party parts, hence, the reason they are able to charge a lower price than the manufacturer themselves. If you do decide to use a third-party service, your warranty, if your phone is still covered, will be null and void if you do choose this route.

In most cases, the entire repair will take up to two hours.

Is It Worth Fixing Your iPhone Charging Port

Should you fix your iPhone charging port or sell it broken? You can base your decision on how much your iPhone is worth broken versus repaired, especially if you plan to upgrade soon.

Start by calculating the net value of your iPhone after charging port repair .

For example, at the time of this writing, an iPhone X 64GB on the Verizon network was worth $255 in good condition. Heres a breakdown of its net value after different repair options.

iPhone X Value Cost of Repair = Net Value After Repair

    Repair Method
    Apple Repair -$294 $105

As the table depicts, our example iPhone will have significantly more net value if you repair it yourself, file an AppleCare+ claim or take it to an independent repair shop.

However, the Verizon insurance deductible leaves a net value of just $26, while Apple repair costs more than the phone is worth, so youd lose money by going with those options.

If you have SquareTrade insurance, the difference between the net value after repair and the broken value is just $1, which might make you question whether its worth the hassle.

This article explains how you can troubleshoot and fix charging issues on iPhones.

See If The Problem Is Possibly With The Outlet The Wall Plug Or The Cable

It might be simple to assume that charging your iPhone is as simple as plugging in the iPhone, but if you break down the steps, you are plugging an iPhone to a cord, which connects to a wall plug, which connects to an electrical outlet. There are multiple factors that could be causing your iPhone to not charge properly in this particular moment. Youll want to identify which piece of the process is malfunctioning, so youll need to experiment. First, plug the phone, cord, and wall plug into a different electrical outlet. Then, try and use a different wall plug. If that doesnt fix the issue, try a different cord.

If all else fails, if somebody else in your household has an iPhone as well, plug that iPhone in. Doing this will isolate what the problem is. However, if the problem is your iPhone, then youll want to continue to find a solution to the problem of why your iPhone isnt charging.

You carry your phone with you everywhere, typically in your pocket or your purse. Unfortunately, your phone has to also share that space with other objects and items, items that can dirty up your charging port. Before you see if your charge port is actually damaged, try and clean out the charging port. One way to do so is with tweezers, carefully pulling any lint/debris out of the port. With this, just be careful not to accidentally scrape the sides of the iPhone port as this could more seriously damage the phone. As an alternative, you can use 99% rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush to brush out the inside. While this is good for getting out smaller pieces of dirt, larger pieces of lint will need to come out via tweezer.
