    What You Need To Know

    • Overviewer gives teachers a way to share their iPhone’s camera across video calls for free.

Sometimes the best apps are those born out of necessity and that’s definitely the case with Overviewer, an app created by developer Charlie Chapman. It’s an app that’s difficult to explain, but if you boil it down far enough it’s actually really simple Overviewer takes what your iPhone’s camera sees and puts it into Zoom calls.

Why is that handy? Because the alternatives are big, costly machines and right now teachers are working remotely. Like Chapman’s wife.

My wife is a Kindergarten teacher and when COVID hit she had to figure out how to teach a bunch of 5 and 6 year olds how to draw letters over Zoom. Initially she made her own document camera using her iPhone and the default camera app. Zoom has a wonderful feature where you can share your iPhone’s screen by plugging into your laptop with a lightning cable or even wirelessly over AirPlay but when you open the camera app there are two issues.

Those problems are pretty obvious sharing your iPhone’s screen means those on your Zoom call have to see the Camera interface, for one. Secondly, the Camera app doesn’t actually rotate into landscape it only rotates the labels which means you’re stuck in portrait. But you’re stuck, no more.

You can see how the whole thing works in Chapman’s video below. There’s also a blog post outlining more of the details, too.

Tips For Using An iPhone As A Webcam

How to use iPhone as document camera

A wired connection will always fare better than wireless. If you want the most reliable webcam solution, ditch wireless, and opt for a USB connection. Both of our chosen apps support a rock-solid USB connection. Unless youre walking around the house while chatting, Wi-Fi makes little sense here.

If you want to use your iPhone as a webcam, youll also need a way to keep it still. The best solution is a smartphone tripod, or tripod mount if you already have a tripod to use.

GorillaPods are perfect for this because you can mount them virtually anywhere. The Joby GripTight ONE is a solid little tripod mount for smartphones that attaches and detaches almost instantly. The GripTight PRO 2 comes with an appropriately sized GorillaPod in the box. If youre in a pinch, you can also make your own smartphone tripod mount using binder clips.

Both apps allow you to use the rear-facing camera, which is something you definitely should do. Not only can you use the flash if required, but the rear-facing cameras on an iPhone are vastly superior to the selfie cam. If your iPhone has multiple lenses, you can choose between those, as well. However, we recommend sticking to the regular wide lens for a more flattering focal length.

Using your iPhone as a webcam will drain its battery. If you arent using a USB connection , then make sure you plug it into an outlet. If your iPhone battery dies while youre on a call, so will your video.

  • Overviewer Is A New App That Turns An iPhone Into A Document Camera For Zoom And Virtual Learning

As students and teachers continue to work from home amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Overviewer has hit the scene as a new iOS app for turning your iPhone into a document camera on Zoom and other video conferencing applications. The app is meant to be a replacement or substitute for traditional document cameras, which are common in education but costly and cumbersome to use.

Document cameras are traditionally top-down cameras that allow teachers to show worksheets and other documents to a classroom of teachers. With many schools operating virtually, however, this has become a challenging problem to solve.

Overviewer comes from developer Charlie Chapman, who is also behind the popular Dark Noise ambient sound app. Charlie shared some interesting details on the inspiration behind the app in a blog post today:

Overviewer solves these issues by giving iPhone users the ability to have their iPhone act as a document camera for video conferencing apps such as Zoom. For example, Overviewer can be used in Zoom when your iPhone is connected to your computer via Lightning or even via AirPlay.

Then, Overviewer will send to Zoom exactly what the iPhones camera sees, including support for property rotating into landscape. This allows teachers to use their iPhone like a document camera, and easily show students as they work on math problems, drawing, and other tasks.

Enable Epoccam Webcam On Zoom App

As mentioned above, the EpocCam works with every video conference app that lets you choose the camera hardware to use. However, some popular video conferencing apps like Zoom and Webex have added an extra layer of security using a code signature verification. This particular signature on these apps disables users from using iPhone webcams using virtual camera apps. However, you can still use the iPhone camera as a webcam for Zoom meetings by removing the signature. Here is how to enable EpocCam for the Zoom app.

  • Open the Terminal app.
  • Enter the following command and hit enter/return: sudo codesign –remove-signature /Applications/
  • Quit the Zoom app and relaunch.
  • Now, click on the Zoom icon from the menu bar of your Mac and click âPreferences.â
  • From the Zoom preferences window, click âVideoâ from the sidebar.
  • Select the camera as âEpocCam.â
  • Now, your iPhone camera directly captures video for the Zoom meeting app on your Mac. Similarly, you can enable EpocCam for various other video conferencing apps including Cisco Webex. Below is the command to remove the code signature from Webex.

    sudo codesign –remove-signature/Users/<your-username>/Library/Application\ Support/WebEx\ Folder/T33_64UMC_<webex_version>/Meeting\
