How To Delete System Storage On iPhone! (2020)

Finder and iTunes categorize cached music, videos, and photos as Other instead of actual songs, videos, or photos. Cached files are created when you stream or view content like music, videos, and photos. When you stream music or video, that content is stored as cached files on your device so you can quickly access it again.

Your device automatically removes cached files and temporary files when your device needs more space.

What Is Other Storage On The iPhone And How Can I Free It Up

You can see the Other section on your iPhone at the bottom of the apps list, there are two listing, one for System and one for Other.

Other is basically storage that is used by a number of apps on your device, you can clear some of this storage on your iPhone and there are a number of ways this can be done.

Tip #1: Clean Up Your Notes

While your Notes app wont show up under the Storage Usage list mentioned above, the more notes you have, the more they pile up taking precious storage on your phone. This is potentially one of the least-impactful ways to free up space, as most notes do not use much memory but it will force you to clean out the old and unnecessary notes you no longer need, and that will help free up at least a little space if youre desperate.

On your device, open your Settings menu and head into General, and then iPhone Storage.

If its gold, that means Live Photo is on and every photo you take will have a live copy. Tap it once to turn it off the icon will turn white and Live Photos will not be taken until you turn the feature back on.

How To Automatically Offload Unused Apps

Offloading apps wont delete any cached data that youve accumulated while using the app, but it will delete a different type of Other Storage. When you install apps on your iPhone, some of the system files for the app get filed under Other. If you never use the app, then thats storage you arent getting back. You can set up your iPhone to offload apps that you arent using. This deletes the app, but not your passwords and other associated data, making reinstalling an offloaded app easier than a deleted app.

Why Is It Taking Up So Much Space

While cached data may not seem to need much space, it is surprising how large streamed media content can be not to mention the image-rich social media apps we love so much.

Looking through the list of apps and their storage allocations will quickly show how storage is being consumed. In this screenshot above, for example, you can see Facebook is consuming 2.17 gigabytes.

However, if we look on the App store, it says the Facebook app only requires 255.4 megabytes. So somehow the app is occupying an additional 1.9GB. Where is this extra 1.9GB coming from? Its likely caches of images, videos and other content your phone had to store in its own memory storage so you could scroll through Facebook without encountering the dreaded buffering spinning wheel.

How to Reduce âSystemâ? Storage Size on iPhone or iPad

The Photos app often takes up a lot more space than people realize, so let’s deal with that app directly. Under Settings > General > Storage, find Photos to see how much storage it’s using. If you have more than 1GB here, you should consider copying photos and videos to a cloud storage service so you can delete them from your device.

If you have a Google account, an easy option here is . Download the app, sign in, and tap your account icon on the top right. Select Google Photos Settings > Back up & sync and toggle Back Up & Sync to on. Google used to offer unlimited photo storage via Google Photos, but that deal is dead, so plan accordingly as photo and video uploads count against your Google account storage. If you’re a Prime member, Amazon Photos still offers unlimited uploads here are a few more alternatives.

You can also choose to keep lower-resolution photos on your phone while allowing the full-resolution ones to remain in iCloud. Go to Settings > Photos > Optimize iPhone Storage and make sure it has a checkmark next to it.
