Use The Health App On Your iPhone Or Ipod Touch

The Health app gathers health data from your iPhone, Apple Watch, and apps that you already use, so you can view all your progress in one convenient place.

Health automatically counts your steps, walking, and running distances. And, if you have an Apple Watch, it automatically tracks your Activity data. You can also enter information into a Health category or get data from any of your favorite apps or devices that are compatible with Health.

Pedometer++ The iPhones Best Step

Pedometer++ is a free app that counts your steps. It uses the data provided by the built-in pedometer, and presents it as a chart, or and this is the one you want as a widget on your Today view . Stick the widget on your Today screen, and your step count is just a swipe away from your home screen. Pedometer++ also lets you set a goal , and gives you a confetti shower when you achieve it. If you double the goal, you get a special prize.

The other advantage of Pedometer++ is that it obviates all the tedious setup detailed above. Just download it, launch it, and give the app permission to access your Motion data, and youre good to go.

If you keep the iPhone in your pocket the whole time, and youre the kind of OCD nerd who loves to count things, youre going to love the iPhone pedometer function. I switched mine on the day I got an iPhone with a Motion Coprocessor, and its been running ever since. I cant say that it has motivated me to do more walking, but on the days I reach 15km , I use the step-count as an excuse to let me buy a pound of baklava.

2 Easy Ways to Track an iPhone With Find My iPhone

You have probably heard people talking about the famed 10,000 steps per day goal. Despite its arbitrary nature – the figure comes from a Japanese pun – counting steps can be a good motivator for being more active. Heres how to do it without a smartwatch.

PIT

Tracking steps is big business these days, and the accuracy of pedometers is questionable. However, using your phone to count your steps is a nice way to figure out how active you are being and can be used as a motivational tool for being healthier.

The first point Id like to make is that you shouldnt take these numbers a gospel. Use them as ballpark figures. If you are consistently average less than 2,000 steps on a Sunday, for example, as I do, it might be time to think about throwing in an afternoon walk to your routine. Alternatively, if you walk more than 20,000 steps some days, as I also do, it can be nice to check an app and get a ballpark figure for how far you walked.

The important thing to realize here is that you dont need a smartwatch to track your steps. Fitbit and other smartwatch manufacturers are not all about counting steps either, but the truth is that lots of people buy these wearable devices simply for that one piece of data alone. And they dont have to.

What Is The Step Counter App

StepApps has a streamlined user interface that can be customized with one of six fun colors. On the iPhone, you can swipe your home screen and lock the screen to see the apps widget it easily lets you see at a glance how many steps you’ve logged. Wheelchair users can also use this pedometer app if they have an Apple Watch.

Using Pedometer++ To Track Your Step Count

Before owning an Apple Watch and keeping count of steps directly from it, I used Pedometer++, a , and admittedly one of the best pedometer apps for iPhone. It is free, simple, and to the point, which I particularly appreciate.

Specifically, my favorite feature of Pedometer++ is how it displays step data in a very clear fashion using a bar graph. The tallest the bar, the more steps you have. And unlike Apples Health app, it clearly shows how many steps youve been walking each day, something you have to hunt down when you use the Health app.

Pedometer++ also lets you set up a daily step goal. If youre far below the step goal, your bar will show in red. It will turn orange if you get closer, and green once youve reached the goal.

Still, Pedometer++ is not perfect. I find it to often report step data much higher than what Apple reports in the Health app. I dont want to argue Apples tracking is better than Pedometer++s, but as a conservative measure, I like to base my daily step goal of 10,000 steps on Apples own data.

As an example based on the screenshots used in this post, you can see that the Health app reports 2,393 steps for me so far today, while Pedometer++ reports 2,645. Thats a 10% difference! At the end of the day, it might not be a big deal to you if all youre looking for is a rough estimates of your walking steps.
