Health And Fitness Tracking Excels On The Apple Watch

Both the Apple Watch and the Galaxy Watch have plenty of features to keep an eye on your vitals.

On the fitness front, the Apple Watch has 14 workout types built-in, while the Galaxy Watch has 39. Both also let you track any other type of workouts under the “other” category.

Each watch gives you an alert and vibration when they automatically detect some sort of workout happening, usually in the first 5-10 minutes of activity. But they’re limited on the number of activities they can detect for you. They both do running, walking and some gym machines, but only the Apple Watch will autodetect swims, and only the Galaxy Watch can autodetect cycling.

The Apple Watch has an FDA-cleared ECG app on board. It also can alert you when it detects an abnormality such as high or low heart rate, or an irregular rhythm that could signal atrial fibrillation. Another feature alerts your loved ones and emergency services if it detects you’ve taken a bad fall.

The Galaxy Watch uses the heart rate sensor for fitness purposes and for tracking stress levels. And the Galaxy Watch automatically tracks your sleep if you wear it to bed, unlike the Apple Watch. It breaks down the duration and quality of sleep.

Here are the other fitness features on these watches:

While theres no official YouTube app available on Tizen OS the software the Galaxy Watches run on, you can easily download a free YouTube viewer such as Player4YouTube to get around this. You can also browse the web via Gear Browser.

As a bonus, here are just a handful of the games adapted for playing on your Galaxy Watch:

  • For fans of Flappy Bird, check out Flying Bird Winter.
  • Relive your childhood Nokia Snake game with a revamped, circular version called Snake Circle
  • Want a virtual round of tic tac toe? You can play against the computer or other players with Gear Tac Toe right from your smartwatch.

What Do I Miss

You miss out on some pretty important features, unfortunately, although some may sting more than others based on your needs and daily routine. Notably, the Android Wear watch doesnt integrate with the iPhones communication functionalityso if you read a text message on your wrist, you cant speak out a quick reply, nor can you dictate a new message with your voice. Google Assistant just doesnt know what to do when you ask, unlike Siri.

If you get a call, you can reject it on your wristbut that was the extent of my options with the LG Watch Style. Many Android Wear devices dont have a speaker for two-way communication, including the Watch Style, although they all have a microphone for spoken searches and commands. But even the watches with speakers dont let you take calls on your wrist.

Youll have to grab your phone if you want to chat.

There is one exception to this rule: if you buy one of the 4G Android Wear watches with its own LTE connectionlike the LG Watch Sport or Verizon Wear24, for examplethen you can set up call forwarding to patch calls over to your watch. But thats an all-or-nothing arrangement thatll stop calls from hitting your phone until you turn it off.

Heart Rate Monitor & Sleep Tracking

Can You Use Galaxy Watch With iPhone? An In

Heart rate monitor is a standalone feature on the Galaxy Watch and doesnt need an app on your iPhone. It also has an additional feature called Stress calculator, which uses the heart rate sensor. However, if you want to track the details, youd be advised to use the Samsung Health app.

Samsung Galaxy Watch also has an inbuilt Sleep app, which automatically tracks your sleep. It records everything, and you dont have to set the bedtime, as it does that for you. The app recognizes the REM phase of your sleep and does that pretty accurately. Its a standalone feature, which means it doesnt depend on the Galaxy Watch app on your iPhone. But you might benefit from the Samsung Health app, as it offers better tracking.

    Round Not Square Watch Face

Starting off with the most controversial one: Im not the only one who thinks the Apple Watchs square-faced design is rather chunky or even just plain ugly #sorrynotsorry.

How the Apple Watch looks may not be a dealbreaker for you, but it certainly made me think twice about whether I could bear the Apple Watchs appearance for the sake of having a more streamlined Apple ecosystem of devices .

The big question is, where do you draw the line before you finally say no to the next Apple product?

You can only take one home!! Which one are you picking?? Apple Or Samsung

    What Are My Options

Nearly all of the Android Wear watches released within the last two years are compatible with an iPhone running iOS 9.0 or newer. Google lists 20 different watches that have assured iOS functionality, although most of the older, first-wave Android Wear devices arent listed. The first-gen Motorola Moto 360 and LG G Watch arent listed as compatibleand yet the G Watch worked fine for me when I tested it, albeit using an older OS version.

Whats so appealing about Android Wear is the sheer variety of looks and styles. Google makes the software, but all of the manufacturers are free to design the watches as they please, right down to the size and shape of the screen. There are sports watches and fashion watches, for example, as well as budget and luxury options. But that also means that there may be inconsistencies in features, such as watches lacking NFC for mobile payments, a heart rate sensor, or 4G capabilities.

    Google

The LG Watch Sport and Watch Style are the current headline devices.

However, not every watch runs Android Wear 2.0, which adds extra functionality for iOS users. Still, there are a fair number of 2.0 devices now. The LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style were the big new hardware releases alongside Android Wear 2.0, although our sister site Greenbot wasnt hugely impressed with either . Ive been using the LG Watch Style for this article, and I agree that it feels cheap and flimsyand the battery life is dismal if you enable the always-on display.
