Perhaps the biggest news with our battery tests is that — it’s not much news at all. While iPhones post huge gains in speed and performance year over year, their battery life tends to be largely unchanged. In fact, the 2017 iPhones actually have smaller batteries than their 2016 counterparts , albeit with the exact same battery life expectations because of the newer models’ more efficient chips.
Indeed, Apple never claimed marathon battery life for the iPhone X, either. Its published battery specifications are equal to that of the iPhone 8 on internet use and wireless video playback , while the 8 Plus is rated for an hour more on each task. Meanwhile, the X and 8 Plus rank considerably higher than the 8 on talk time and wireless audio playback .

The iPhone X, out in 2017, contained a 2716 mAh battery that Apple claimed would allow the phone to last two hours longer than the 7. The XS Max fared no better with its larger, 3174 mAh battery lasting only 10 hours and 38 minutes. However, Trusted Reviews kept the XS Max lasting throughout the day after normal, heavy usage, and Tech Radar had a similar conclusion, stating that the phone lasted on a single, full charge from 7 a.m. to midnight with moderate to heavy use.
2018âs iPhone XR impressed Tech Radar, who declared this model to have âthe best battery life of any phone from .â Coming into the X series with a 2942 mAh battery, smaller than the XS, the phoneâs energy efficiency kept it from burning too much battery life all at once. Tech Radar managed to keep an iPhone XR going from 5:30 a.m/ to 11:00 p.m. with still some charge left to spare.

In 2017, Apple released the iPhone 8 with a 1821 mAh battery, noticeably smaller than the iPhone 7âs and bad news for anyone who wasnât impressed by that phoneâs battery life. Tech Radar noted that the iPhone 8âs battery life only lasted about 13 hours of regular use, and Trusted Reviews received a similar result during its tests, only getting an iPhone 8 to live through the day by constantly changing settings and adjusting the screen brightness.
The iPhone 8 Plus also had a smaller battery than the 7 Plus, with a capacity of 2675 mAh. Trusted Reviews did not see the battery life on this model change much from either the 7 Plus or the 8, but noted the 8 Plus did not require constant adjustments to last the day.
How Do I Get A New Battery
The answer to this question can be a little tricky thanks to Apple policies. Youve probably seen several electronics repair stores in your area that offer iPhone repair. Unfortunately, many of these places arent Apple Certified and therefore, you arent going to get original Apple parts. Youre more than welcome to take your phone to one of these places just keep in mind, the battery and the way your phone interacts with that battery will never be the same as the original.
With that word of caution, we recommend that you call Apple before taking your iPhone X for a battery repair to a third-party shop. Apple often offers the battery replacement and a lower cost and your phone could still have a warranty. As we saw with the iPhone 6, Apple offered battery replacements at no charge for a time because of hardware issues.
You can contact Apple to find a retail store or an authorized repair center near you. At the time of writing, an iPhone X battery replacement is $69 with no warranty. It isnt a bad deal for factory parts and installation provided by certified technicians. Just keep in mind before driving all the way to an Apple Store if your phone has third-party parts, they will know and they wont work on it.
