Weve been getting a lot of questions from concerned individuals who want to find out how to track an iPhone by phone number. To address that concern, Ive added this part in the article.

Recover Your Lost iPhone: The Find My App Is Key

Every single iOS device has Apple’s Find My service, formerly Find My iPhone, built into its system settings. The app is connected to and managed by your Apple ID. The moment you realize you’ve lost your phone, the first thing you should do is visit icloud.com/find on a computer, open the Find My app on another Apple device you own or have a member of your Family Sharing group use the Find My app on one of their Apple devices. Alternatively, you can use the Find My app on another Apple device by signing in with your Apple ID.

If accessing Find My via the website or on someone else’s device, it’s important to sign in to the same iCloud account linked to the lost iPhone. After signing in, click the All Devices option at the top of the screen, then select your phone from the list. The map will refresh, taking you to the current location of your phone. If the device has been turned off, the last known location will be shown.

When viewing the device’s location, use the card in the top-right corner of the screen to play a sound, turn on Lost Mode or remotely erase your phone. Or in the Find My app, you can scroll down to find the same options, with the addition of turning on notifications for whenever the device is found if it goes offline.

The Find My website makes it easy to track down your lost Apple devices.

Make Sure Find My iPhone Is Enabled

After setting a passcode, double-check that Find My is turned on. It should be enabled by default, and you’d have to go out of your way to disable it, but it’s always a good idea to double-check right now.

On your iPhone, open the Settings app and tap on your name at the top of the screen. Next, tap Find My > Find My iPhone. Make sure that the switch next to Find My iPhone is on, and while you’re there, make sure the switches next to Find My network and Send Last Location are on as well.

As a refresher, Apple’s Find My network will crowdsource the location of a device marked as lost. For example, if you lose your iPhone and mark it as lost in the Find My app , Apple will use the Find My service on any iPad, iPhone or Mac to locate your iPhone, even if it’s not connected to the internet. The device owner won’t even know they’re helping you find your lost device. I covered this feature in more detail here when it made its debut. There’s no reason to not use the network to help you, or a complete stranger, find a lost Apple device.

As for Send Last Location, well, that’s pretty self-explanatory. As your battery gets low, it will automatically send its last location to Find My in an effort to help you recover it if it turns off. You can still track your phone after it shuts down if your device is running iOS 15, but that’s only available on newer iPhone models. More on that later.

Tap Send, then choose whether you want to share your location with that person for one hour, until the end of the day, or indefinitely. The person on the other end will then be asked to share their location with you. Just like you, they will have the option to contact you directly, get directions to your location, and get notifications about your specific location.

    Locating Devices Without A Connection

Apple in iOS 13 added a new Find My option that lets your lost devices be located even when not connected to WiFi or LTE by leveraging Bluetooth and proximity to other nearby Apple devices.

When your lost device is offline but close to another device, it’s able to connect to that other device over Bluetooth and relay its location. That means that your devices are more trackable than ever, and there’s a better chance you can find a device that’s been lost.

You’re not going to notice a difference in the Find My app when tracking a device over Bluetooth rather than a cellular or WiFi connection — it simply shows up in the list of devices like any other device that does have a standard connection. Offline devices do have their distance from you listed in gray instead of blue, and you can tell when the location data was last updated by the time listed.

In testing, setting an iPad into Airplane mode and enabling Bluetooth continued to allow the iPad to be tracked thanks to another nearby iPhone, but turning off Bluetooth prevented it from being found even from a device to device connection.

    Location History And Privacy

All major tech companies and apps have some form of location tracking feature. Everyone from Apple, Google, Facebook, to Twitter does it. Each company uses the data in different ways.

Apple, for example, only collects a pool of significant locations that you have visited in the past and claims it doesnt share this data with anyone. Google, on the other hand, keeps a detailed track of all your activity, especially if you use .

If you open Google Maps Timeline view, youll be able to see exactly where you traveled on a given dayeven if you didnt use Google Maps for navigationthanks to background location tracking.

Both these services opt you in by default, but you can disable location tracking if needed.

Find Your Location History In Google Maps

Apple stores a limited amount of location history data and doesnt let you browse through the data in a timeline view. Google, on the other hand, has a detailed Timeline view that lets you browse through the roads you traveled through and the places you visited on a given day.

If you use the app on your iPhone or iPad for navigation, you can use Google Maps Timeline feature to access your location history.

Google Maps ability to track your location depends on your privacy settings. You can choose to allow Google to track your location only when youre using the app or to always track your location in the background. You can change this setting on your iPhone or iPad by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Google Maps.

If you want, you can also disable the Location History feature from your Google account settings .

The can be accessed on the web on your iPhone, iPad, or computer. For the best viewing experience, try to use a laptop or a desktop computer. Youll see the map of the world with some places highlighted. Here, you can pan around and click on a location to see the available data points.

In the top-left corner, youll see the timeline interface. From here, you can pick any date to see the detailed breakdown of your travel data. On the right, youll see the route you took in the map view.

If you dont want Google to collect and store this data , you can disable the Location History feature altogether.

How do I track / see where I’ve been on my iOS 7 or later iPhone?

The location services feature on your iPhone allows location-based apps and websites to determine your location based on information from GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular and iBeacon networks. If you have location services enabled, your iPhone will keep track of places you have been, when you were there and how often you’ve been there. If you want to see this information, here is how you do it in iOS:

  • Go to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services.
  • Scroll all the way down and go to “System Services.”
  • Go to “Significant Locations” at the bottom.
  • Enter your passcode if prompted, or verify with Touch ID or Face ID.
  • Scroll down and you will see a “History” section that lists places you have been. If you tap on a location you can access more detailed information, including a map with more specific locations marked on it. Tapping on one of these will show you dates and times that you were there.
  • It is interesting to see where and when you’ve been to various places, but if you are uncomfortable with it you can always turn the service off by going to Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services -> Significant Locations and toggling the switch at the top.

Tracking Devices That Have Been Erased

If someone steals your iPhone and then erases it, in iOS 15, it’s still going to show up in the Find My app, and it will be trackable even after it’s been wiped.

The feature is tied to Activation Lock, which prevents someone from using your iPhone without your Apple ID and password. In iOS 14 and prior iOS updates, erasing a device would leave Activation Lock on so no one could use your iPhone without your password, but erasing a device did prevent Find My from functioning.

A wiped iPhone would not show up in the Find My app, but now, erasing an iPhone no longer works that way. If Activation Lock is on , it’s tied to your account and locatable using Find My. Combined with the feature for tracking a device that’s turned off, the Find My app serves as a much stronger theft deterrent.

To prevent someone from being tricked into purchasing a device that’s tied to your account, the Hello screen on a newly erased iPhone makes it clear that the device is locked, locatable using Find My, and the property of someone else.

    Dont Jailbreak Your iPhone

This is more of a precaution than a spyware removal method. Hackers have an easier time installing spyware on jailbroken iPhones. When you jailbreak an iPhone, you remove many of Apples security protections.

Also, note that there are some apps on the Cydia store that are malicious. By downloading these apps, you could be putting your phone and personal data at risk. Consider upgrading to a newer, non-jailbroken version of iOS.
