2022 iPhone SE 3rd Gen Review

The iPhone SE can capture 4K video at up to 60 fps, and I put it to the test against the Pixel 5a shooting this footage of the Raritan Bay at a nearby park. The iPhone’s video is warmer and has more contrast, bringing out a bit more detail in the wood by the shore.

However, the Pixel 5a’s clip looks brighter, and as a result the white points of the waves look a bit crisper, as do the Canadian geese on the beach and in the water. The footage is a bit more washed out, but you can make out more detail in the rocks as I pan all the way to the right. While the iPhone SE’s zoom is more limited, the Pixel 5a’s is jumpy and quite fuzzy at the max level.

iPhone Se Review: Release Date And Price

The iPhone SE is available to order now, with the release date set for March 18. The starting price for the new iPhone SE is $429, which is $30 more expensive than the previous iPhone SE .

There are three storage options to choose from for the iPhone SE . Theres 64GB for the base price, or you can pay $479 for 128GB or $579 for 256GB. See our iPhone SE deals page for all the latest discounts. Just keep in mind that you may have to wait for your iPhone SE to arrive, as pre-order deliveries for the iPhone SE 2022 have already slipped to late March.

And you if you’re still undecided, you might want to opt for the refurbished iPhone 12, which Apple has just started selling.

The iPhone Se Has A Longer Battery Life

The iPhone SE now supports a 5G cellular connection — the more widely available but slower Sub-6 variety, though the SE will be able to connect to the faster C-band spectrum rolling out in the next several months. The SE does not support millimeter wave, but unless you live in specific locations like near a sports stadium in a major city, you likely don’t have mmWave coverage anyway. We have a few guides on CNET explaining C-band and comparing the iPhone SE’s 5G support against the $499, LTE-only iPhone 11. The short version is that this 2022 iPhone SE is set to support what will likely be how most people get that faster 5G network and speeds.

Unfortunately, my carrier doesn’t have 5G coverage where I tested the phone. But keep checking here because I’ll update this review with my experience using the SE on 5G once I can. That said, calls over 4G LTE were good and sounded clear.

The SE easily lasts a day on a single charge.

On the inside, the SE has a larger battery, which — when combined with the new design, iOS 15 and the A15 Bionic chip — gives the phone a longer battery life than the previous iPhone SE. Over the four days I had the SE, it had no trouble making it through a day on a single charge. I often ended the day with the battery between 20% and 30%. The one day I shot a bunch of videos and took lots of photos, the SE’s battery ended up at 19%. My screen time has averaged five and a half hours a day.

A13 Bionic Vs A15 Bionic

The iPhone SE’s A15 Bionic is the same chip from the iPhone 13, offering significantly better performance and efficiency than the A13 Bionic in the iPhone 11. The A13 is several years old at this point, while the A15 is found in Apple’s high-end iPhone 13 Pro models and the iPad mini.

The iPhone SE’s A15 is clocked at 3.2GHz, while the iPhone 11’s A13 is clocked at 2.7GHz. In single-core, the A15 achieves Geekbench scores of around 1,700, compared to the A13’s 1,300. In multi-core, the A15 achieves scores of around 4650, compared to the A13’s 3,050. Users can therefore expect moderate performance improvements with the A15, and it is also likely to offer better longevity in the years ahead compared to the A13 due to its age.

    iPhone Se Review: Design

Picking up the iPhone SE for me is like taking a trip back in time. Theres a Touch ID button instead of Face ID, and the bezels around the display take up a lot of room compared to, say, the iPhone 13 mini or vs. Google Pixel 5a face off).

Then again, this phone isnt designed for me. Its for people who like small phones and are probably stepping up from the iPhone 8 with the same size display and nearly the same design.

And this is definitely a compact device, weighing just 5.09 ounces and measuring 5.45 x 2.85 x 0.29 inches. It makes my iPhone 13 Pro Max look like a skyscraper, and I did appreciate using a phone I could easily slip in my pocket without being noticeable. I also liked that I could do pretty much everything with one hand.

The iPhone SE is IP67 water resistant, which I tested by dropping it into a fountain. And this handset is more durable than the previous model because it uses the same tough glass as the iPhone 13.

Apple sent us the Midnight color of the iPhone SE , which is a deep Navy that shifts colors in sunlight to a lighter blue. Theres also Starlight and Product Red. The materials used to make the iPhone SE included carbon-free aluminum, a first for Apple.

    iPhone Se Review: Cheat Sheet

    • The iPhone SE delivers flagship-level performance, thanks to its A15 Bionic chip, so you should expect iPhone 13-like speed when multitasking and playing games.
    • 5G performance is solid. We saw close to 195 Mbps downloads on T-Mobile. But you don’t get Verizon Ultra Wideband support.
    • 4.7 inches is tiny for a phone display in 2022, so you really need to want a small phone if you’re shopping for the iPhone SE.
    • The overall camera quality from the new iPhone SE is excellent and in many cases beats the Pixel 5a. But we wish there was a Night mode.

    iPhone Se Price And Availability

Apple iPhone SE (2022 – 3rd gen) review: Still worth it?
    • Not the cheapest iPhone ever at $429 / £419 / AU$719
    • New iPhone SE is available as of March 18, 2022
    • Available in the US, UK and Australia

The iPhone SE has gotten a price hike over its predecessor to $429 / £419 / AU$719, but it still qualifies as Apple’s cheapest 5G phone. The iPhone 13 mini starts at $699 / £679 / AU$1,199 and the iPhone 12 mini starts at $599.

However, it is more than a little frustrating that Apple insists on offering a phone with just 64GB of storage to start. The phone shoots up to 4K, 60fps video. Where are all those files supposed to go? Apple’s iPhone 13 line now starts at 128GB across the board. That’s the standard Apple should’ve followed here. The issue is compounded because the iPhone SE tops out at 256 GB of storage , though there’s also a 128GB option for $479 / £469 / AU$799.

If you’re considering a 256GB iPhone SE at that price, then you really should start thinking about one of the iPhone 13 models.

The previous iPhone SE started at $399 / £389 / AU$679, and while asking for a little more for a 5G phone with the newest processor is not a big ask, consumers will notice the packaging is a bit smaller and lighter. The environment will thank Apple, but some consumers might be miffed that there are no longer wired earbuds and power adapters included with the device. That’s the same for the iPhone 13 series, but the omission still might sting for budget-conscious iPhone consumers who now have to buy the accessories separately.

    Same Boring Design And Colors

I included design on my list of top features for the iPhone SE 3 because some people really enjoy the smaller form factor and physical Home button. But for those of you who are primarily attracted to the iPhone SE 3 due to its price, the old long-in-the-tooth iPhone 8-era design can be seen as a negative. The screen, at 4.7-inches, is smaller than the iPhone mini, and it genuinely feels cramped to use, while the large bezels make the device feel ten years old.

On top of that, the colors of the iPhone SE are pretty boring, too. The colors might have different names starlight and midnight and slightly different hues, but I wish Apple would experiment with less pedestrian colorways.

iPhone Se 3 Vs iPhone 11 Buyer’s Guide

The third-generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 11 are Apple’s lowest-cost iPhone options, starting at $429 and $499 respectively. Apple released the iPhone 11 in late 2019, and has bumped it down in price since then to make it more accessible as new iPhone models have been released. On the other hand, the third-generation iPhone SElaunched in early 2022, refreshing the most affordable iPhone option in the lineup.

With just $70 between them, should you get the new, smaller, entry-level iPhone or the older, larger, standard model that has come down in price over the years? Our guide helps to answer the question of how to decide which of these two iPhones is best for you.

iPhone Se Review: Battery Life And Charging

The iPhone SE is rated to deliver up to two hours of longer battery life than the previous iPhone SE, thanks to a slightly larger battery and efficiency gains from the A15 Bionic chip.

The new iPhone SE lasted 9 hours and 5 minutes on the Tom’s Guide Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over 5G at 150 nits of screen brightness. That’s actually a bit less than the iPhone SE ‘s runtime of 9:18 however, that was over a 4G LTE connection, which uses less power. The 5G-enabled Google Pixel 5a lasted a longer 9 hours and 45 minutes.

On the plus side, the iPhone SE can charge fairly quickly if you have a 20W Apple charger. We got to 61% in 30 minutes, which is better than Apple’s 30-minute claim.

Apple iPhone Se 3rd Gen Review: Display And Multimedia

The display has basic resolution , but it is a tiny 4.7-inch screen, so it doesnt look bad at all. Also, there is no high refresh rate, but that doesnt mess up anything. Viewing pictures and videos on the iPhone SE 2022 is a pleasant experience.

The stereo speakers on this smartphone are of good quality. You hear the bass and the timbre of music. It really is a pleasant experience. If you choose to use a wired headset, you need a 3.5mm adapter for that. The experience leaves a lot to be desired, though.

2022 iPhone SE 3: really worth it? – Review

You’d be forgiven for mistaking the new SE with the previous one from 2020: They look identical. And while the letters SE stand for “Special Edition,” they could easily mean the “Same Edition.” That’s not a dig at either phone — the classic iPhone look is beloved by many. But keep in mind that in 2022, the SE’s design traces back to 2014’s iPhone 6 and is far from cutting-edge. Anyone looking for multiple rear cameras or minimal bezels won’t find them here.

The SE has large bezels above and below the screen and a home button with Touch ID instead of Face ID. If you are upgrading from an iPhone 6S, 7 or 8, this phone will seem nearly identical in terms of design and build. But it’s not. The SE has the same body as an iPhone 8, but the glass on the front and back is more durable. In fact, it’s the same glass used on the back of the iPhone 13. The finish on the review unit I tested is called midnight. In some lighting it looks jet black, and in other lighting it has an indigo hue.

The SE is the only iPhone you can buy new that has a home button and Touch ID.

The new SE remains one of the smallest phones that you can buy. The glossy glass back and curved sides make the phone feel slippery. The body is rated IP67 for water and dust resistance, which means it can survive being submerged under a meter of water for 30 minutes. When filming the review video, I ran it under the faucet a couple of times to remove dust, and the SE still worked without a hitch.
