If you have an iPhone 12, there’s little reason to upgrade right now. That’s because the iPhone 12 has a lot in common with the iPhone 13. They both have 5G support, a vibrant OLED 6.1-inch screen, a fast processor, great cameras and MagSafe accessory support. The biggest reasons to consider upgrading are the camera updates — especially for shooting video — and the longer battery life.

All of Apple’s new iPhones, including the standard iPhone 13 and 13 Mini, are getting a new video shooting feature called Cinematic mode, which automatically switches the focus between subjects to give footage a more filmlike aesthetic. It looks like a neat trick for those who frequently use their phones for video projects, and our reviewer Patrick Holland had a blast testing it out. Apple says that Cinematic mode takes advantage of the new A15 Bionic processor, but it’s worth noting that Apple also has a history of bringing enhancements like these to previous iPhones through software updates.

As is usually the case, Apple’s bigger photography improvements can be found on the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. A Screen Thats More Than Just Pixels

With a 6.1-inch screen, the iPhone XR has a larger display than the 5.5-inch iPhone 8 Plus and the 5.8-inch iPhone X/XS, and its just barely smaller than the 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max.

Physically, it slots right in-between the iPhone XS and XS Max. In that sense, its counterintuitive its a bigger screen than the iPhone XS without the larger price tag that comes with it.

The main trade-off of the display is the screen technology. It uses an LCD Liquid Retina display compared to the iPhone XSs OLED Super Retina display.

The advantages of OLED over LCD are numerous: OLED displays produce deeper blacks, are capable of better brightness and contrast, and tend to have more accurate color reproduction. OLED screens are also more power efficient since they to get nerdy for a second here light up each individual pixel only when its necessary to do so , whereas an LCD needs a backlight that individual pixels block when theyre black . Since OLEDs dont have a backlight, theyre also thinner.

The iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max both have an OLED display whereas the iPhone XR has an LCD screen.

However, Apples LCD technology has always been a cut above everyone elses, and the LCD screen on the iPhone XR is no different. Apple calls it the most advanced LCD ever made with a faster 120Hz touch-sensing rate for more touchscreen responsiveness .

From a design standpoint, there’s not much difference between the iPhone 13 vs. the iPhone 12 save for one very visible exception. That would be the notch on the iPhone 13, which is smaller on all four new models . Otherwise, the look of the phones is the same, with the same flat edges and Ceramic Shield displays for greater durability.

The new models do weigh a bit more probably because of the bigger batteries Apple has included with the iPhone 13 and there are new color options. A Pink model joins the black , white , blue and Product colors on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. The new color for the iPhone 13 Pro lineup is Sierra Blue, which joins graphite, gold and silver options. Since the iPhone 13’s arrival last year, Apple added green options to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro models.

It’s the displays where Apple has made the biggest changes from the iPhone 12, though the AMOLED panels used in the iPhone 13 lineup are the same size as their predecessors. Instead, Apple is promising brighter displays 28% brighter than the iPhone 12’s screens in fact. The iPhone 13 and 13 mini can produce 800 nits of brightness while the iPhone 13 Pro models crank things up to 1,000 nits.

In testing, we recorded 795 nits of brightness for the iPhone 13 and 788 nits for the iPhone 13 mini. That’s better than both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini . The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are terrifically bright, too.

Six Weeks With iPhone 12 This Is Getting Creepy

I wasn’t at all convinced that iPhone 12 would offer a vast difference.

Indeed, I went to an Apple store to examine it for myself before succumbing to an entirely surprising sales experience.

The saleswoman didn’t oversell the 12. Instead, she told me: “That’s probably the most similar to what you’ve got. The difference between the 12 and the 12 Pro is the telephoto lens. So if you’re some sort of videographer, get the Pro.”

I’m not a spy, so I chose the 12.

I’ll admit I found the blue color marginally alluring. At the time I bought the phone, I muttered: “The 12 felt lighter and slightly slimmer than my XR, oddly but not unpleasantly retro and, hey, now I have two cameras, something I’ve never consciously wanted at all.”

You see? No absurd enthusiasm there. Just a sense that at least this thing might be a touch more personable to the hand.

The last six weeks, however, have tended toward the creepy. I find myself enjoying the phone’s square edges. I find myself thinking back to the rounder edges of the iPhone XR and concluding they looked cheap.

I also find myself believing that the screen has a noticeably sharper resolution and a much better microphone. It clearly takes appreciably better pictures too. I actually like holding this phone. Someone seems to have spent a little more time making its ergonomics fit my handonomics.

What’s most disturbing to me is that I’m beginning to feel slight affection for this object. A phone, no less.

iPhone 13 Vs iPhone Xs Xs Max Xr

If you have a phone from 2018’s iPhone XS generation, it could be worth upgrading to the iPhone 13. The iPhone XS is more than three years old, which means it might be starting to feel sluggish. It also has noticeably shorter battery life and is missing useful camera features like Night mode and a higher-resolution selfie camera.

The same advice applies to owners of the iPhone XS Max, since the main difference between this phone and its smaller sibling comes down to screen size and an extra hour of battery life. There’s even more reason to upgrade if you own an iPhone XR . It’s essentially the same phone as the iPhone XS except it comes with a single-lens camera, a larger 6.1-inch LCD screen instead of a 5.8-inch OLED display, and brighter color options.

The iPhone XS might be fine for those who don’t care about having the fastest processor or sharpest camera. Even if that describes you, the gains in performance and battery life alone between the iPhone 13 and iPhone XS are likely to feel like a huge difference. There isn’t always a huge jump in speed and battery life between generations, or even two generations, of phone upgrades. But once you hit three years, that’s where you really start to feel the improvements.

And that’s just the camera. Don’t forget, you’re also getting 5G support, more storage, compatibility with Apple’s MagSafe accessories, a bigger and brighter screen and Apple’s new flat-edged design.

iPhone 13 Vs iPhone 1: Battery Life And Charging

Apple doesn’t disclose battery sizes when it announces new phones, so we don’t know how big the iPhone 13 batteries are relative to their iPhone 12 counterparts. But we do know that they are bigger and that they last much longer on a charge.

That’s welcome news. Apart from the iPhone 12 Pro Max, the other iPhone 12 models all finished well below average in our battery test in which we have phones surf the web over cellular until they run out of power.

Apple says that the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 Pro should last up to 1.5 hours longer than their iPhone 12 counterparts. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max are in line for 2.5 hour improvements. Our testing certainly bears that out.

As you can see, each of the iPhone 13 models outlasted their iPhone 12 counterparts in our battery test, with improvements ranging from modest in the case of the iPhone 13 mini to outstanding for both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Both the iPhone 13 Pro models have earned a place on our best phone battery life list where we recognize phones that hold out for more than 11 hours on our test.

Charging speeds are unchanged from the iPhone 12 15W MagSafe wireless charging and 20W wired charging. As with the iPhone 12, the iPhone 13 models will ship without an included charger.

I have had this phone for 2 months, it is a value for its money, this is my first iPhone, I had been using redmi devices in the past. it took a while to get used to the interface, but the device performs very well, Its battery performance is very good I can get up to 7 hours of battery life on normal usage, and it charges pretty quickly from 0 to 80 percent even though from 80 to 100 it does take a long time. its dual-camera setup is top tier, it out beats mobile phones in its price range.

Longer Than Expected Battery Life

Its interesting how Apple compares the battery breakdown on its website. The iPhone XS is advertised with one hour longer battery life than the iPhone X. The iPhone XS Max lasts 1.5 hours more than the iPhone X. And Apple says the iPhone XR lasts 1.5 hours compared to the iPhone 8 Plus.

Beyond suggesting how Apple sees the XR , it also sets expectations lower.

With the iPhone XS and XS Max, I consistently got a day and half of battery life, which was on par with the previous Plus-sized iPhones. The iPhone XR has a 2,942 mAh compared to the iPhone XSs 2,658 mAh battery and the iPhone XS Maxs 3,174 mAh battery.

Fast wireless charging is the future.

Disregarding specs because iOS and the A12 Bionic are more power efficient compared to Android phones, which need larger batteries with bigger capacities to run as long, the iPhone XR lasted longer than I expected it would.

Because the screen is so bright, I dialed the brightness down to 50-60 percent, and managed to get anywhere between 2-4 more hours than the iPhone XS and XS Max. Battery life is quite impressive to say the least and if youre looking for the maybe the longest-lasting iPhone, the XR appears to be the battery life champ.

iPhone 13 Vs iPhone 1: Performance And 5g

The iPhone 13 models are all powered by the A15 Bionic processor, an upgrade from the A14 Bionic chip found in all the iPhone 12 models. Considering the A14 was the fastest system-on-chip we’ve tested, that translates to a pretty powerful performance for the new iPhones.

Having tested the iPhone 13 models, we found that the new chipset is faster than the A14 inside the iPhone 12, though there’s not a dramatic iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12 gap. In Geekbench 5, for example, the iPhone 13 Pro recorded single- and multicore scores of 1,733 and 4,718, respectively. Both of those results were better than the 1,585 and 3,669 results posted by the iPhone 12 Pro.

Those are synthetic benchmarks, though. In real world testing, the gap was more narrow. We use Adobe Premiere Rush to transcode a video, timing the results. The iPhone 13 models were faster at this than their iPhone 12 counterparts, but only by a second or two.

One thing about the iPhone 13 Pro models they have a 5-core GPU, compared to a 4-core graphics processor on the regular iPhone 13. You’d think that would make the Pro models a gaming powerhouse, especially compared to last year’s iPhones. Indeed, on 3DMark’s Wildelife Unlimited test, the iPhone 13 Pro generated 70 frames per second to the iPhone 12 Pro’s 51-fps result.
