Everything You Should Know About Designing Apps For Bezel

iPhone X was the most significant step up since the original iPhone, and it set a new bar for mobile app designers and developers. iPhone XS and XR series that were released after iPhone X were both based on the same concept of bezel-less phones. Before diving into details on how to design for any of those devices, we recommend you download the Apple UI Design Resources for your favorite design tool, which includes templates, along with comprehensive UI resources that depict the full range of controls and views using the iOS SDK. These resources help you design apps that match the iOS design language. After that, youâll be ready to design your first app for the bezel-less iPhones. The good news is that best practices for mobile app design are still applicable for bezel-less phones, so you already have a solid foundation for your design. Since the range of bezel-less iPhones includes model X, XS, and XR, for the purpose of this article we will provide examples for the iPhone X.

Below you will find the four most important design considerations that should be considered when designing mobile apps for bezel-less iPhones:

  • Adjusting designs for the new screen
  • Putting more focus on gestures
  • Using Face ID in apps
  • Creating new types of apps
  • Modals Popovers And Alerts

iOS provides various styles of temporary views that can be used to display, edit and manipulate data in a way that fits best in a given situation. While each temporary view exists for a very specific purpose and each one looks different, all temporary views still have one thing in common: When displayed, its the highest index layer on the current view , and content underneath is overlayed by a translucent black background.

    Activity View

An activity view is used to perform specific tasks. These tasks can be default system tasks such as share content via the available options, or they can be completely custom actions. When designing icons for custom task buttons, you should follow the same guidelines as for the active state of bar button icons solid fill, no effects, on a transparent background.

    Actions

Action Sheets are used to perform one single action from a list of available actions and to force the user of an app to confirm an action or cancel it.

In portrait mode , actions are always displayed as a list of buttons sliding in and staying at the bottom edge of the screen. In this case, an action sheet should always have a cancel button to close the view and not perform any of the listed actions.

When there is enough space available , action sheets visually transform into popovers. A button to close the view is not required anymore because tapping a target anywhere outside the popover will close it automatically.

Improve Your App With User Feedback

The key to a successful app is continual improvement!

Once your app is in the hands of real users, youll start getting some feedback.

    Some good and some bad.

Take the criticism positively and be thankful that someone is willing to tell you how to improve because if someone is speaking up, theres most likely more users that feel the same but arent willing to speak up.

Show your users that youre not abandoning your app after the launch.

Show them that youre constantly improving the app and releasing bug fixes, new features and app updates.

Over time, youll beat out the other mobile apps in your niche that arent doing this!

Technique #: Improve An Existing App

Have you used an app and thought, It would be so much better if this could do X? If so, thats the creative spark of a really good potential app idea!

Theres always room for improvement so if you thought that an app was sorely lacking a useful feature, chances are that you werent the only one to think that.

If the original app author isnt constantly updating and improving the app, then theres an opportunity for you to create an even better app.

One way to figure out whether or not youre right about this is to check the reviews and ratings for the original app.

Are people complaining about the same thing? Are they complaining about something different? Is the app author listening to the feedback?

As youre going to see, listening to user feedback and improving your app based on that feedback is probably the singular driving force to the success of an app.

An absent app author is sentencing his or her app to a slow death of user attrition.

The next step is to validate your idea to make sure that it has a chance to thrive in the app store.

    Typography In Ios Apps

For more on iOS typography , see my full article on it here.

iOS has a distinctive paradigm for styling text. Perhaps the most surprising lesson is that where many design systems style with size or uppercase, iOS styles with weight or color. Weâll unpack this lesson looking at many of the text styles across iPhone apps. Hereâs a quick reference in case you want to skip ahead:

    Element Type
    • Dark mode color: #FFF

You can get a lot of mileage by making slight tweaks to this basic style.

For instance, while normal list items are written with the default text style, the Mail app shows email senders in bold â as it helps the senderâs name stand out from the subject line and preview.

Likewise, text-based link buttons are basically the default text, but with different colors.

And search field hint text is the default text, but a lighter gray.

A menu with a variety of automations will open up. Scroll down until you see Battery Level and select this.

    Icons For The List View

Icons arent just for springboard-loving folks. On small screens, icons can give a huge boost to an applications usability and navigation. Lets now take a look at some examples of applications that use icons to their advantage.

iStudiez This application uses various educational metaphors as icons to clearly communicate the purpose of the application. Excellent visual cues tell the student whats happening today at a glance.

Top Floor Top Floor uses simple and easily recognizable icons to quickly guide users to their category of choice.

New York TimesIsnt it great when applications just let you do whatever you want to do? For an app with as much information as the New York Times, users are bound to have their favorite sections. Well, guess what? The New York Times cares: it lets you customize the tab bars navigation to include only your favorite sections of the paper. Drag an icon down the tab bar and you are set. The downside of the design is, of course, its lack of visual appeal.

Filemaker Here is another example of beautiful icons that arent obscure or confusing. Designers should never use icons just for the sake of having icons. As designers, we want icons that illustrate what users are actually going to get when they choose a particular path. Nicely done, Filemaker.

Is It Easy To Create An App

    Again, it depends.

Lets say you want to code your own apps from scratch. In this scenario, it wouldnt be that easy. Youd need to learn new programming languages and go through extensive trial and error to write the code.

Alternatively, its extremely easy to make an app if youre using a no-code platform like BuildFire. These tools are built specifically for non-technical users. If youre comfortable navigating the internet, you can build an app using this method.

Theres still a slight learning curve, but its gentle. The only thing you need to learn is how to use the platform itself. This is something you can figure out on your own in less than an hour or two of clicking around. Plus, most no-code app builders have tons of resources and tutorials at your disposal that will teach you how to do everything. This will really make your life easier.

Generally speaking, heres how those platforms work.

Youll start by picking an app category, like ecommerce, education, fitness, employee communication, apps for events, etc. Then within those categories, you can choose a template based on the type of app you want to build.

For example, there are templates for gym apps, barbershop apps, salon apps, schools and universities, podcasts, and more. Even within those categories, there are subcategories that you can chooselike apps for yoga instructors within the fitness and wellness category.
