Bonus: Use Common Sense
This may be the simplest solution to robocalls, but its worth trying and wont cost you a dime.
If you receive a call from an unknown number or one that doesnt show up on caller ID, dont answer. If its an important call, the person will leave a message and you can get back to them. If you can ignore the volume of robocalls coming in and self-filter the important ones, you can avoid even engaging with these scammers in the first place.
But be advised: If you answer the phone and the caller asks you to hit a button to stop receiving calls, just hang up. Scammers often use these tricks to identify and target live respondents. Once they know the number is active, you may be targeted by more calls in the future.
Install A Call Blocking
If your home phone is a traditional landline that doesnt use the internet , you can buy and install a call-blocking device. Call-blocking devices are typically small boxes you attach to your phone.
Some devices use databases of known scam numbers but let you add numbers you want blocked. Other devices rely on you to create and update your own list of numbers to block.
Some use lists to
- show a blinking light when an unwanted call comes in
- connect callers to a recording with options so a real caller can still get through
Some devices also use lists of approved numbers. That helps you limit which calls get through, or lets you set up do not disturb hours during which calls go straight to voicemail. Other devices try to weed out robocalls by playing a prerecorded message prompting callers to press a number to continue the call.

Block Spam Calls By Only Allowing Calls From Your Contacts
Another way to win against spam calls is to block all numbers except for those in your contacts list. Sure, this might be an extreme measure, but it will get the job done. The best way to achieve this is to download an app like Calls Blacklist Call Blocker. Its free of charge and extremely popular, with more than 10 million downloads. But there are many alternatives available if its not up your alley for some reason.
Just download the app at the link above, open Settings, select Blocking, and tap on Block all numbers except contacts, as shown in the screenshots above. When you receive a call from a number not saved in your contacts, your phone wont ring, but youll be able to see that the call happened within the app. Nice!
This method obviously has a major drawback. Youll likely miss calls from friends, family members, coworkers, and others who may have changed their number or call from a different phone. So make sure you only opt for this measure if all else fails.

Why Do Random Numbers Call Me
Since scammers can automate spam calls, they can call a lot of people in less time. Even if you block spam calls, you might still get more.
Scammers use Voice-over IP to make spam calls, so they dont have to stick to one phone number.
They can spoof different numbers, usually ones with the same area code as you. Spoofing can make it seem like theyre a real person calling.
If you get a spam call and block that one number, it wont stop scammers from calling you with other numbers. VoIP is the reason why it seems like so many random numbers call you.
Unfortunately, that system makes it very hard to stop spam phone calls. However, you may sometimes see scam likely calls. Youll see Scam Likely on the caller ID if your phone provider thinks the number is spam.
If you need to stay productive while working from home, separating your business and personal phone numbers can help. By setting up a work phone number, you can ignore personal calls, which can include scam calls.

Block Individual Spam Callers On Android And iPhone
Are you getting a lot of spam calls from one particular number? You can block that number in a couple of taps.
On Android, you can do this by opening the Phone app’s Recent calls section. Tap the number you want to block, then tap Block/report spam. You will be asked to verify, and then the number will be blocked.
From now on, calls from this number will not ring on your phone, and the number will also be added to Google’s database of spam numbers.
The process is similar on the iPhone. Head to the Recents tab, then tap the information icon next to the number you want to block.
Tap Block this Caller, then confirm this is what you want to do. That number is blocked.
This is not a long-term strategy for dealing with robocallers, who change phone numbers regularly to evade systems like this. It does feel good, however, and at the very least can stop a particularly annoying number from calling you back.
What To Do If Youre Already Marked Scam Likely
Its often easier to avoid getting marked as a scam than to resolve the problem after the fact. The fastest way to get your companys calls removed from a scam list is to change your phone number. Who Is Scam Likely And Why Are They Calling Me
Some wireless providers such as T-Mobile have created a new scam ID technology that automatically labels a potentially dangerous caller as Scam Likely. PrivacyStar, a company that helps mobile phone users avoid unwanted phone calls, also assisted in creating this scam filtering program.
Depending on what kind of phone you have, the message that you see on screen may be different. Samsung has their own spam detection and prevention service for their Android smartphones called Hiya which works pretty much the same way.
These features changes the caller ID of the potential scam caller to Scam Likely. This works using a lot of different methods, but one way that they can do it is compare the number against a database of confirmed scam callers. If the number is a match, it will label the number.

How To Identify Scam Calls On Other Carriers
The “Scam Likely” warning is great, but what if you don’t use T-Mobile, Metro, or Sprint? Most other carriers have their own similar service. This is due to the STIR/SHAKEN standard that US carriers have implemented on their networks over time.
Essentially, this is a set of protocols that allows carriers to fight back against caller ID spoofing. You’ve probably experienced this when you receive a call from a number that matches your area code and exchange. For example, if your number is 555-1212, you might get a call from 555-3434. This is a scammer attempting to gain your trust by disguising their far-away number as a local one.
These standards allow providers to display a “Call Verified” message on your phone to confirm that it wasn’t spoofed. This is available on an increasing number of devices and carriers as they all work to cut down on the billions of spam calls made each year.

Internet-based call-blocking services can block unwanted calls on phones that use the internet. Your phone provider might be able to recommend a specific service. But you also can search online for expert reviews. Some services are free and some charge you each month.
Some internet-based services and phone apps require all calls to be routed through their service, where they are instantly analyzed. You may have choices about how unwanted calls are handled. For example, unwanted calls might
- be stopped
- go straight to a separate voicemail
- go to a spam folder
What You Can Do
You dont have to just rely on your carrier. Theres a lot you can do to help yourself.
There are some semi-obvious things like signing up for free to the National Do Not Call Register, but robocallers are not marketers and do not follow the same rules. You should forget about changing your phone number it wont help. Within days of setting up my work phone nobody had my number it was barraged with spam calls. The robocallers arent dialing you from a preexisting list theyre dialing phones at random using computer-generated numbers. Often the spammers will reel off a list of numbers based off your own area code to make the number look more local and convincing. Sometimes the spoofing is done so badly that there are extra digits in the phone numbers.
Another option for the most annoying of robocalls is to use a third-party app, one that screens and manages your calls on your device.
There are, however, privacy tradeoffs with third-party apps. Firstly, youre giving information about who calls you and sometimes who you call to another company that isnt your cell carrier. That additional exposure puts your data at risk weve all seen cases of cell data leaking. But the small monthly cost of the apps are worth if it means the apps dont make money off your data, like serving you ads. Some apps will ask you for access to your phone contacts be extremely mindful of this.
The three apps weve selected balance privacy, cost and their features.
