How To Hard Reset An iPhone 8 And Older

When your iPhone is locked up because of some glitch or error, the normal shutdown process may not work. In that case, try a technique called a hard reset. This should only be used when other attempts have failed, but sometimes it’s just what you need.

  • Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for 10 seconds or more. The screen goes black, and the Apple logo appears. On the iPhone 7 series and 8 series, use the Volume Down button instead of Home.

  • When you see the logo, release both buttons and let the phone start normally.

  • The hard reset feature is not the same thing as restoring a phone to its factory default settings. The word restore is sometimes called reset but has nothing to do with restarting a phone.

The challenge is that Apple has changed the method every few models so that turning off your iPhone on an older device is quite different than whats required to turn off an iPhone 12.

Apples phones have a long shelf life, thanks to the companys support of multiple years of software updates. For example, iOS 14 the current version of Apples phone software runs on devices as old as the iPhone 6s and original iPhone SE. Increase iPhone Auto Lock Period

How to Power Off, Power On & Hard Reset the iPhone X & Later

Instead of completely turning off the Auto-Lock feature, you can try to increase the duration before which iPhone screen automatically turns Off.

    1. Go to Settings>Display & Brightness>Auto-Lock> On the next screen, tap on 2 minutes.

After this you will find your iPhone going into sleep mode after 2 minutes of inactivity.

If this is not enough, you can increase the Auto-Lock period to 3, 4 or 5 minutes.

    If None Of That Works

It’s possible that even after trying to force restart your phone, it remains frozen, locked, or otherwise unresponsive. Your options are starting to narrow at this point, but you can still try at least one more thing.

    1. Plug your phone in and let it charge for 1-2 hours. Don’t disturb it while it charges.

    2. After that, see if it’s come back to life on its own.

    3. If necessary, try to perform a force restart.

If none of that works, your best bet is to take it to an Apple store for service.
