How To Hard Reset An iPhone 8 And Older
When your iPhone is locked up because of some glitch or error, the normal shutdown process may not work. In that case, try a technique called a hard reset. This should only be used when other attempts have failed, but sometimes it’s just what you need.
Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for 10 seconds or more. The screen goes black, and the Apple logo appears. On the iPhone 7 series and 8 series, use the Volume Down button instead of Home.
When you see the logo, release both buttons and let the phone start normally.
The hard reset feature is not the same thing as restoring a phone to its factory default settings. The word restore is sometimes called reset but has nothing to do with restarting a phone.

How To Turn Off Your iPhone
Turning off your iPhone seems like it should be a simple task and it is, provided you remember the specific buttons youre supposed to press to power down your device. The challenge is that Apple has changed the method every few models so that turning off your iPhone on an older device is quite different than whats required to turn off an iPhone 12.
Apples phones have a long shelf life, thanks to the companys support of multiple years of software updates. For example, iOS 14 the current version of Apples phone software runs on devices as old as the iPhone 6s and original iPhone SE. That means there are phones released five to six years ago that are still in circulation, and if youre upgrading from one of these older handsets to a new model, you may not be familiar with the changes Apples made over the years.
To help you turn off your iPhone, here are the different ways you can shut down a phone based on Apples assorted models. It all comes down to the position of the Sleep/Wake button and whether your iPhone is unlocked with a passcode, Touch ID or Face ID.
Heres how to turn off your iPhone.
Hard Reset Your iPhone
The next step is a hard;reset. To do this, hold down the Sleep/Wake button ;and the Homebutton at the same time.;Press and hold these two buttons together until the Apple logo appears on your iPhones display. You may need to press both buttons for as long as 20 seconds, so be patient!
Performing a hard reset on an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus is slightly different.;To hard reset an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, press and hold the power button and the volume down button;at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
If you have an iPhone 8 or newer,;press and release the volume up button, then press and release the volume down button, then, press and hold down the side button until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears.
A hard;reset can help restart software that may be working improperly. Id like to stress that this is not the right way to turn off your iPhone every time. If the normal power off option works, use that. A hard;reset can interrupt software and actually cause more problems if you do it for no reason.

While the iPhone X, XS, and the XR no longer feature Apples iconic home button, they still have power buttons. Unfortunately, when it comes to turning off the device, the power button alone doesnt cut it.
Usually, when you turn off an iPhone, you hold down the power button for a few seconds and then swipe on the screen to turn off the device. On the newer iPhones, though, holding down the power button activates Siri. So Apple had to get a bit creative during those times when you want to shut down your iPhone.
To turn off your iPhone X, XS, or XR, press and hold down on the power button and the volume up button at the same time.
From there, youll be able to slide to power off like normal. You can also enable access to your Medical ID if you have it set up, as well as bring up Emergency SOS from this screen, which will call 911.

Multiple Ways To Turn Off Your iPhone 12
We want to point out that this isn’t the only way to turn off your iPhone 12. For instance, if your iPhone’s physical buttons are damaged by any chance, you have the option to shut it down from the iOS settings menu. The force restarting technique is also a great way to pull the plug on your iPhone when it isn’t responding at all.
From now on, no matter what iPhone you get, you shouldn’t have a problem turning it off.
Increase iPhone Auto Lock Period
Instead of completely turning off the Auto-Lock feature, you can try to increase the duration before which iPhone screen automatically turns Off.
1. Go to Settings>Display & Brightness>Auto-Lock> On the next screen, tap on 2 minutes.
After this you will find your iPhone going into sleep mode after 2 minutes of inactivity.
If this is not enough, you can increase the Auto-Lock period to 3, 4 or 5 minutes.
If None Of That Works
It’s possible that even after trying to force restart your phone, it remains frozen, locked, or otherwise unresponsive. Your options are starting to narrow at this point, but you can still try at least one more thing.
1. Plug your phone in and let it charge for 1-2 hours. Don’t disturb it while it charges.
2. After that, see if it’s come back to life on its own.
3. If necessary, try to perform a force restart.
If none of that works, your best bet is to take it to an Apple store for service.
