For Continuity to work, youll want to make sure that all devices are connected to the same iCloud account and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled. We were able to copy and paste text via a mobile data connection, but had a few issues pasting images until we enabled Wi-Fi.

Lets show you briefly how the copy and pasting process is performed, first from iPhone to Mac.

To copy a short bit of text in Safari from iPhone to Mac, select the bit of text on iPhone you want to copy. You can either tap the Copy button that appears from the resulting context menu. You can also tap the share button at the bottom of screen and tap Copy.

Why Do Smartphones Let Apps Read The Clipboard

Use Universal Clipboard to copy on one device, paste on ...

When you copy something to your clipboard, apps can read the contents of your clipboard without you manually selecting Paste. This is by design.

For example, when you copy a tracking number to your clipboard on iPhone or iPad and open a package-tracking app, it can recognize you have a tracking number and offer to add it automatically. When you copy a web address to your clipboard and open a browser, it can offer to automatically go to that address.

Its just more convenient than forcing you to tap a Paste button whenever you want to move something to another app.

This applies to Apples iPhone and iPad as well as Android. Whichever smartphone operating system youre using, apps can read your clipboard.

The 5 Best iPhone Clipboard Managers

Here’s how to manage the clipboard on your iPhone, along with the best iOS clipboard managers to expand its functionality.

You’ve probably used the iPhone clipboard more times than you can count for copying and pasting text between apps. And while the built-in clipboard is helpful, it has some limits. Most notably, it can only store one piece of information at a time.

Thankfully, a number of third-party clipboard apps can step in and provide some additional features. Let’s take a look at what the iPhone’s built-in clipboard can do, then offer some great alternative iPhone clipboard managers.

A Look At The iPhone Clipboard

By itself, the iPhone clipboard isn’t exactly impressive. There’s no actual clipboard app and no real way to find what’s stored on your iPhone. That’s because iOS can store exactly one piece of information—the last snippet copied—when you hold down the cursor and select Cut or Copy.

Anytime you select Paste from the same menu, the information in the clipboard will appear wherever you can insert text. Take a look at our guide to copying and pasting on iPhone for more advice.

If you ever want to completely clear the iPhone clipboard, just tap on a blank space until the text cursor appears. Then press down and pick Copy from the menu. That empty space will reside in the clipboard memory afterward.

Since the built-in clipboard option on the iPhone is barebones, here are better clipboard apps to take your workflow up a notch.

Use Universal Clipboard To Copy/Paste from iPhone To Mac

I’m about to tell you something that will shock you, and probably make you very angry. I hope you won’t hate me for it. Here goes.

If you are an iPhone user, everything you have copied to your clipboard on your iPhone can be secretly accessed by various apps. These apps often record the contents of your clipboard several times a minute, and send them to their company servers to store for eternity.

Think about all the things you copy to your clipboard. Links. Passwords. Private messages to your friends and family.

All of these things are being stolen from you and sent to the data centers of multinational corporations, who will use it to figure out what ads to show you so they can make more money.

And that is just the best case scenario. There’s no way to know for sure what they are using your clipboard data for.

Apple has known about this for a long time. And they are just now taking steps to restrict apps’ access to your clipboard, and to notify you when an app accesses the contents of your clipboard.

This was never an issue for Apple until privacy advocates started raising awareness of this earlier this week.

Here’s an insane supercut of several well-known apps stealing the contents of your clipboard

Some apps, like TikTok, use this clipboard exploit even while running in the background to steal every single character you type into any app.

Here’s an example of this discovered when Apple started showing clipboard notifications in the iOS 14 beta:

Tap the icon and you will see the image you copied earlier, along with other content you previously copied.

Whats important here is that you have figured out a way to find Instagram Clipboard even if the app restricts the use of copy-pasted material through the Instagram app for Android.

But what about iPhone users? How can they get in on the action?

Your Copied Text Could Be Sent To A Remote Server

But, as TikTok demonstrated, apps can also just capture the contents of your clipboard in the background and do whatever they want with it. They might send the contents of your clipboard to a remote server.

Were not accusing any apps of doing thiswere just saying that its technically possible and theres nothing stopping it in iOS or Android. Apps dont have to ask for permission before reading your clipboard like they do before reading your contacts, photos, and location.

But Apple doesn’t think that this is a problem.

    | Topic: iOS

Did you know that all the apps on your iPhone and iPad can snoop on whatever you copy to the system clipboard ? A new security demo by researchers at Mysk shows how this could be used by apps to get detailed information about the user.

Here’s one way that any app installed could grab details about a user.

“A user may unwittingly expose their precise location to apps by simply copying a photo taken by the built-in Camera app to the general pasteboard. Through the GPS coordinates contained in the embedded image properties, any app used by the user after copying such a photo to the pasteboard can read the location information stored in the image properties, and accurately infer a user’s precise location. This can happen completely transparently and without user consent.”

Because Apple has adopted a universal clipboard that shared clipboard between devices, this means that shady iOS apps could get access to the Mac pasteboard too.

Mysk offered a number of solutions to this issue, from adding a permission system for reading from the pasteboard, only allowing apps to access the pasteboard if the user actively performs a paste operation, or stripping the location information from copied photos.

Does Apple see this as a problem? Mysk submitted this issue to Apple at the beginning of the year, but were told that it wasn’t an issue.
