It’s Almost Like Apple Wants You To Keep Your Old Phone Almost

Using the iPhone 6S in 2021 – Review

Of course Apple releases new iPhones in hopes that youll upgrade and give them more money. But after public outrage over Apples admittance that they slow down your older phones on purpose, the company is doing things a little different with their next iOS release.

Apple has announced that iOS 12 will basically be its most friendly mobile operating system for older model iPhones ever. Theyre focusing on performance issues with this latest release and have said that the new iOS will actually make your older iPhones, like the 6S, even faster than they are already.

Combine that with the fact that iPhone 6S owners still have 3 months to replace their battery with a brand new one, thanks to that aforementioned iPhone slowdown scandal, itll be like getting a new brand new iPhone for a total of $29.

So, heres to all the iPhone 6S users that will once again pass on Apples latest, expensive phone offerings and keep their cheaper beloved 3-year-old model. Hold onto it for as long as you can. I’ll be doing exactly the same.

Is The iPhone 5 Still Good In 2020

Its amazing to think that its already been eight years since the iPhone 5 came out. Within just 3 days of its release date on September 21, 2012, Apple had sold 5 million of these phones. In only 12 months of production, more than 70 million were sold worldwide.

This means that there are a lot of used iPhone 5s available for sale on classified sites like Kijiji, and on online marketplaces like Orchard. You can save money choosing the iPhone 5 over a newer iPhone, but heres the big question: is the iPhone 5 still good in 2020?

How To Install Apps On An Obsolete iPhone

While older iPhone devices may not be able to support the latest version of the iOS operating system, it does not mean that they cannot support the last compatible version of the application that you want. To download previously installed applications, do the following.

Step 1. Sign in with the Apple ID you used to buy the application on the App Store.Step 2. On your iPhone, open up the App Store. Step 3. Head on over to the Purchased tab and click on My Purchases to find all of the applications you have bought over the years with the Apple ID you are signed in with.Step 4. Click on “Not on this device” to find the application you want to install and tap on the iCloud icon.

Step 5. You will be asked if you want to download an older version of this app because the current version is incompatible with your iPhone. Click the download button to get the app.

If you want an application that youve never bought or installed before and it isnt compatible with your iPhone version because it needs the latest iOS operating system, you can still get the app. However, you need to buy it on a newer device and then download it onto the older device.

If an application has been deleted from the Apple servers, these methods will not work. Keep in mind that when downloading an older version of an application, newer features in the app may not work or may not be present at all.

The question when will Apple stop supporting iPhone 6s, which some are asking, should make those looking to buy an iPhone 6s to think twice. The device is a wise choice, but knowing that it will stop receiving support from Apple sooner, makes it a hard puzzle for whoever is thinking of splashing the cash. But then, one thing iPhone users need to understand is that RAM is a significant challenge when it comes to updates.

So the question is, when will Apple stop supporting iPhone 6s?

The iPhone 6s features a 2GB RAM, which should pose no hindrance in handling the latest iOS 13 update. However, all iPhones have the privilege of enjoying 5 iOS updates in their lifetime. So, since the iPhone 6s came into the market in 2015 and initially had the iOS 9, which was the latest at that time, it then means it will enjoy support up to iOS 14, which will be available in 2020. After that, the phones hardware will no longer have the capacity to support any future software update. That means by 2021 Apple will no longer support the iPhone 6s.

So thats when we expect support for the iPhone 6s to come to an end. Its an experience iPhone users wish they can bypass. Continue reading for more information regarding this topic.

iPhone 5s A7 Processor And Ram

Lets talk about the A7 first. Its a 64-bit ARM processor with two cores running at 1.29Ghz. The A7 was the worlds first 64-bit processor in a smartphone.and it freaking flew back then.

Nowadays, its not going to hold up well for the latest mobile games or video apps, but for standard email and web browsing, the A7 is more than enough.

In Geekbench tests, the A7 scored a whopping 2560 when both cores of the A7 were in use.

In addition to the A7, the iPhone 5s also features 1 GB of RAM.

Now, lets be clear: there are plenty of smartphones out there with more RAM, and 1GB of RAM is nowhere near as much as most smartphones offer today.

However, for email and web browsing, it too is more than enough.

iPhone 5s Should You Buy A Used One

Short answer: if you can get it for very, very cheap, then yes. But thats only if youre looking for an iPhone to use for web browsing and email.

Or if youre looking for an iPhone to give to a young child. My advice would be to get a newer model from Gazelle youll save around 40% and get a much more functional phone thatll last for years to come.

The other, key thing youll need to keep in mind is the battery. If the iPhone 5s you buy is used, youll almost certainly need to get the battery replaced either by Apple or a third-party company.

Phone batteries degrade over time. The iPhone 5s is old and this means that its battery will have degraded considerably.

The good news, however, is that getting a replacement battery is cheap and simple. It will also make your iPhone 5s run as good as new.

This wont be too much of an issue if youre getting a reconditioned unit, as these are all checked and assessed before theyre resold.

If youre buying via an auction site like eBay or Craigs List, youll definitely want to get a fresh battery installed ASAP.

Once youve done this, youll get around 3-5 years worth of usage from the cell. And iOS should function just fine. iPhone batteries are the #1 reason they stop functioning it is seldom ever the phones CPU or RAM.

The iPhone 5s will not get any more updates from Apple, and that means youll miss out on features.

Make sure you check it out before you go and spend almost $1000 on a new iPhone.

Pixel 6 Vs iPhone 1: Which Should You Buy

Apples entry-level iPhone 13 is no slouch by any means. But if you want to go down the iOS route, youll instantly be at a slight disadvantage as youll be paying an extra $100. For that extra $100, you get a smaller screen with a slower refresh rate, smaller battery, and slower charging speeds.

As we stated before, Google is really putting the screws to the smartphone market with its aggressive pricing. Since its announcement, weve already seen OnePlus drop the price of its devices, and we wont be surprised if Samsung follows suit. Theres a lot to like in what Google put together with the Pixel 6, so its going to be fun to see how well the device holds up over the next year.

Is The Frequent Update Of Ios For iPhones Necessary

Why iPhone 6 Doesn’t Support iOS 13

If youre an iPhone user, then its obvious you are no stranger to the regular updates of iPhones. Its one thing every iPhone user must commit to at some point in time. The one thing that could save you from rigors of updating to a newer iOS released by Apple is when theres no more support for the phone in question.

However, Apple only supports its new phones for at least five years, though some iPhone models are lucky enough to enjoy such privileges a bit longer. When seized, everything stops. Your phone will continue to perform essential functions like charging, taking pictures, Face time, and more. But you cant partake in new features, which a new iOS would bring.

To iPhone users, an iOS update is like a party. You know how bad it feels when you are not invited to a party hosted by your peers, right? Thats how it feels not having the privilege to update to a new iOS. For instance, the iOS 13 update is available as of the time of writing, only that the iPhone 5s users are not invited to partake in the update party.

Numerous benefits for updating to a new iOS are available. For instance, if you are a gamer and enjoy downloading the latest games for iOS devices, then you should know how necessary updating to a new iOS can be. There are games that someone using an iPhone 6s can install on their device that someone using an iPhone 5s cant. It happens when the game in question only runs on higher iOS, for instance, iOS 13, which the iPhone 5s cant handle.

New iPhones Are Freaking Expensive

Sure, the new iPhones are faster. But come on. Do you really always need that shiny new gadget? The answer is no, you probably don’t. The iPhone 6S is still fast and supported by Apple. The 6S is light, not too big, not too small, and most importantly youll save a ton of money. In fact, one of the reasons I went with the iPhone 6S is because it was the last of the AT& T subsidized iPhone models.

Until 2017, when Verizon was the last carrier to drop iPhone subsidies, you could pick up a new base model iPhone for $199 — all you had to do was sign a 2-year contract. No purchasing a thousand-dollar iPhone at full price. No monthly fees to payoff that full-priced phone through a loan. No need to trade in a phone you havent fully paid off. After 2 years of service, that normally priced $649 iPhone 6S was fully yours to keep, and all it cost you was $199.

With the base model iPhone XS starting at $999 and the high-end iPhone XS Max model topping out at $1,449, theres no way Id possibly pay to upgrade when I last paid $199 for my phone.

Does 2022 Mean The End For iPhone 7

Most likely yes, by the time 2022 arrives, we will have iPhone 14 on our hands and two new major feature updates as well. Apple ideally supports devices for 5 years and some get an additional year of support if they have enough processing power. Ideally, the 5 years support will end this year for iPhone 7 with the release of iOs 15. However, considering the iPhone 7s processing power and the fact that the iPhone 6s has gotten 6 feature updates and is running the latest iOS 14, we suspect an additional year of updates for the iPhone 7 as well.

This grace of one year could very well be cut short if Apple decides to revamp the OS and introduce resource-heavy features which would slow down the iPhone 7. In that case, 2021 could mean the end of the iPhone 7.

What The Original Reviewer Had To Say

Moving on to the slightly more demanding Peacekeeper benchmark, I saw a score of 2,533, which was way in front of every other smartphone weve tested. Its the same story in Geekbench 3, with a single-core score of 1,631 that wipes the floor with everything else, and a multi-core score thats only marginally beaten by the quad-core Qualcomm hardware in the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Given that the iPhone 6 has half the number of cores as the Samsung, its still a seriously impressive showing. And as for the GFXBench T-Rex HD gaming test, theres simply no competition: the only phone capable of beating the iPhone 6s 51fps is the iPhone 6 Plus, which averaged a silky smooth 53fps despite its higher-resolution Full HD screen.

List of All iPhones and iPads that will support iOS 13 and ...

Now that iOS 13 is out, and iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 won’t be getting it – does this mean that the phones are no longer supported?

Should these devices be considered past their end-of-life? I know that Apple released a iOS 12 security update alongside iOS13, but will that continue to happen?

Is there a way to find out the security status of each iOS/iPhone release?

There’s a difference between hardware support and software support.

Typically, Apple provides hardware support for 5 years after manufacture on their products.

The iPhone 5S is not currently listed as ‘vintage’. However, it’s possible the list may be updated shortly, as the phone was discontinued 5 years ago.The iPhone 6 was discontinued 2 years ago, so will still receive hardware support until 2022.

As for software support: obviously, the devices will not be offered new OS updates, but in the event of a major security flaw, they may receive a patch to fix the problem.

The phones will of course continue to work as they are. Apps will not be updated if they require newer OS versions than are present.

Whatsapp Ends Support For Some Older Devices

Google debuted Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich nearly ten years ago on October 18th, 2011. Its very unlikely that your phone is running anything lower than Android 4.0.4, which was the final update for Ice Cream Sandwich. As long as you can update your phone to at least Android 4.1 Jelly Bean , you can keep using WhatsApp. For now, anyway.

The same is true for anyone who bought an iPhone before 2016. Apple rolled out iOS 10 alongside the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The good news is that Apple supports its devices for far longer than many of its rivals. Heres a list of every iPhone that can be upgraded to at least iOS 10:

  • iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE , iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone SE , iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max

If youre still rocking an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S after all these years, it might be time for an upgrade. If you dont use WhatsApp, maybe you can squeeze a few more years out of it yet.

Finally, while this likely wont apply to any American readers, WhatsApp also supports phones running KaiOS 2.5.1 or later. This includes the JioPhone and JioPhone 2, which are available in India.
