Its all very well wanting something, but that doesnt mean you can have it. Theres a reason why 1,000-megapixel cameras dont exist, and its not because no one wants them .

There are three technical limitations to raising the megapixel rating of a camera in an effort to boost quality. One is simply that a higher resolution takes longer to process and consumes more storage space. Cameras’ and smartphones processors are getting more powerful and memory cards are getting bigger and cheaper, but there still needs to be a balance between resolution and the practicalities of saving the images.

Another limitation is the sharpness of the lens. Theres little point in capturing more pixels if all theyre recording is a blurry image. At the current resolutions offered by smartphones, were already seeing lenses that struggle to maintain sharp focus throughout the frame. Details are usually pretty sharp in the center but they tend to fall off slightly towards the edges. Thats not necessarily a disaster, as the main subject is usually somewhere near the center. However, it stands to reason that there would come a point where increasing the resolution would only capture the defects of the lens in increasing detail.

This is a can of worms that well quickly put the lid back on debates about pixel density will surely go on forever. Its the overall physical size of the sensor and lens which play the biggest role in determining the amount of noise for a given print or screen size.

Video Is Better On The iPhone Xr Hands Down

Both phones record in 4K, but only the iPhone XR goes up to 60fps. The Pixel 3 is stuck at 30fps, which means that you don’t get as much flexibility if you want to slow the video down after the fact.

In good lighting, video is pleasing on both devices. But the iPhone XR’s video image looks sharper and there are smoother shifts in exposure, especially when the light changes. Colors also look more true-to-life. See the video on this page for examples.

Video stabilization is fine on both, but I think the fused stabilization system can make shots look hyper-real. You can also notice a slight jello-like effect when there’s a lot of camera movement.

For slow motion, both film at 240fps. But the Pixel 3 can only film at 720p at this frame rate, while the iPhone is full 1080p HD quality, a bonus.

It’s not all bad news for the Pixel 3 though, as it can track moving subjects in stills or video. It’s a useful feature to have I just keep forgetting it was an option.

The iPhone XR’s recording sounds more rich and full than the Pixel’s track, even though they’re both recording in stereo.

Water And Dust Resistance

The iPhone 11 has an IP68 water resistance rating, which is up from IP67 in the previous-generation iPhone XR. It’s rated to survive a depth of up to two meters for up to 30 minutes. Two meters is double the depth rating of the iPhone XR, but less than some more recent iPhone models.

With an IP68 water resistance rating, the iPhone 11 can withstand splashes, rain, and brief accidental water exposure, but intentional water exposure should be avoided. Apple warns that water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and deteriorate as a result of normal wear.

Apple’s warranty does not cover liquid damage to iOS devices so it’s best to use caution when exposing the iPhone 11 to liquids.

Low Light Is The Pixel 3’s Strong Point

The Pixel 3 has the clear edge when the lights get low, producing photos with less noise and more sharpness than the iPhone XR.

That being said, I do think the Pixel saturates the red channel a little too much, so images really look vivid and a little over the top.

For flash photos, the phones are pretty close. The Pixel 3’s flash lights up the scene with illumination that looks a bit more natural, but the iPhone XR does a great job here too.

How Large Can You Print iPhone Photos

Since the publication of this post, Apple has delivered its latest models, the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max. So how do these compare when it comes to print sizes? Lets take a look!

All three models include rear 12MP cameras. iPhone 11 offers two rear cameras The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max offer these same rear lenses, plus a third lens thats an equivalent to a 52mm lens on a full-frame camera.

While the big difference between these models is the third rear camera, the 12MP sensor isnt much of an upgrade from the previous iPhone X series, 8, 7 series, and 6 series.

This means youll be able to print a photo thats at least 14.29 x 9.49 inches at 200 ppi. At best quality, youll get a print up to 21.44 x 14.24 inches at 200ppi. Probably not good enough for a photo exhibition but suitable for at home prints and small wall displays.

Now that a large majority of the population have smartphones in their pockets, people have ditched the traditional camera and instead are shooting photos through the camera their phone possesses. With this new evolution of photography, comes the question are iPhone photos good enough quality to print?

Landscapes And Hdr Photos Look Great On Both Phones

Each phone uses its own version of HDR to boost the dynamic range in images. On the Pixel 3 you have two levels, HDR+ or HDR+ Enhanced. HDR+ is turned on by default, while HDR+ Enhanced can help boost dynamic range even more but takes longer to process. The iPhone XR uses Smart HDR, which is on by default. You can also toggle it on and off from Settings > Camera.

Landscapes in good lighting look fantastic on both phones. Colors are nicely saturated and exposures are spot-on. I think the Pixel 3 has a touch more contrast to photos, while the iPhone XR has a slightly more even look across shadows and highlights when Smart HDR is turned on.

Overall the Pixel 3’s shots look a touch more saturated and intense than those from the iPhone XR when viewing images side-by-side on the phones’ screens. I’m not a big fan of highly saturated photos but you might like that look, especially if you only review images on the phone. When viewing on a computer screen, the colors are a little less punchy on the Pixel 3. The iPhone XR’s photos can even look a little more saturated by comparison in some situations like in bright sunshine. As always, your mileage may vary depending on what screen you view on.
