Night Mode On iPhone: Everything You Need To Know

Apple’s newest iPhones, the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max, are equipped with a new feature called Night mode, which is designed to take crisp, clear photos even when lighting conditions are poor, such as at night.

Unfortunately, Night mode is not supported on the iPhone SE or iPhone XR. It remains an exclusive feature for the iPhone 11 line of phones.

Night mode, as the name suggests, lets you take photos in the evening, with lighting that has never before been possible on an iPhone thanks to new hardware and new machine learning algorithms. Though Night mode brightens photos, it also preserves the night time feeling, balancing the light and dark elements of an image.

Android smartphone makers like Google and Samsung have had special modes for brightening up evening shots for a while now, and with the 2019 iPhones, Apple is on equal footing with these other smartphone cameras.

    What Does The Research Say

In 2018 The Lighting Research Center has conducted a study in order to evaluate how effective Apples Night Shift really is. 12 young adults have participated.

They were asked to view iPads between 11:00 PM and 01:00 AM on four separate nights under four different conditions. .

The outcome was a significant melatonin suppression during the two hours of each study night with Night Shift suppressing it slightly less.

Moreover, there was no big difference between the effectiveness of the two Night Shift modes .

According to the researchers, changing only your screen colour wont have the benefits you are hoping for.

They recommend reducing the brightness as well.

However, the best way to enjoy a good and peaceful nights sleep is to avoid using any devices at least one hour or even two before going to bed.

Melatonin suppression may not even be the problem sleep scientists claim that inappropriate lighting is not the only reason for sleep issues.

The way we use our phones can also be a stimulant for the brain to keep us awake.

Scrolling through social networks or reading the news before bed are just as bad as blue light.

We have all seen a picture or read an article that made us anxious right before sleep.

Not pleasant, huh? A relaxing book instead is much of a better idea!

    What Is Night Mode

Zobacz pierwsze zdjcia wykonane iPhonem 11 Pro przy ...

Night mode is an automatic setting which takes advantage of the new wide-angle camera that’s in the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro models. It’s equipped with a larger sensor that is able to let in more light, allowing for brighter photos when the light is low.

Night mode uses the new sensor along with machine learning and the Neural Engine in the A13 processor to create Night mode shots.

When Night mode is engaged, the cameras in the iPhone analyze the available amount of light and then the iPhone chooses the number of frames needed to create a suitable image. The camera then takes a series of images for a set amount of time, such as one second, three seconds, five seconds, or in some situations, even longer.

The images are taken at different exposures, some with longer exposures and some with shorter exposures, similar to what’s done when the iPhone composes an HDR image. This lets the iPhone pull out the best parts of the scene, highlighting what’s important.

You’ll need to hold the camera steady when using Night mode, and optical image stabilization also works to reduce shake as you take the photos. After the set amount of time, the A13 chip in the iPhone analyzes each photo that was taken, aligns them to account for movement, tosses out the images that are too blurry, and then fuses all the sharpest images of the bunch.

In a nutshell, Night mode is the result of a better camera sensor and some behind the scenes magic from Apple’s A13 processor.

Turn On Dark Mode For Your iPhone

What is iPhone Dark Mode? Dark Mode, as the name suggests, will change the background color of various iOS elements from light to dark.

It will also change certain text colors to create better contrast against the newly darkened backgrounds.

Turning this setting on is pretty painless, just head to Settings > Display & Brightness. Under the Appearance header, you’ll see two options for Light and Dark; select Dark. You could also go to Settings and swipe down to make the search bar appear, then type in Dark and head to Display & Brightness.

You can also set your iPhone to switch from Light to Dark Mode automatically. If you check the slider under Light and Dark labeled Automatic, your iPhone will shift modes based on the sunrise and sunset patterns .

Many Apple applications will shift to accommodate your new Dark Mode ways. You may notice Safari has a sleek black background and grey detailing now, for instance. Even the app folders on your home screen are dimmed from light to dark grey.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Dark Mode

iPhone 12 Pro Night Mode | How to Use Night Mode on iPhone 12 Pro Step by Step Tutorial |
    • Light-against-dark is not always better for eye strain text can appear washed out, increasing eye fatigue
    • Can be challenging to read long pieces of content or text in dark mode
    • Light text on a dark background can be difficult to read in a well-lit sunny room
    • If you have a phone with an older LCD screen, dark mode wont really save your battery. You will need a OLED screen for this to be the case.;

Ultimately, opinions remain split on dark mode. But, until we know for sure whether; it reduces strain on your eyes at night and helps promote sleep, at least there is the option of leaving your phone outside your bedroom.

    Using Night Mode’s Time Intervals

The iPhone 11 and 11 Pro are able to analyze the lighting in a situation and will provide a recommended interval for Night mode, which is usually somewhere between one and five seconds, though it can vary based on how much ambient lighting is available.

You can tap on the moon icon at the top of the Camera interface to get to the Night mode settings, where you can change the interval from the recommended level to a longer level if desired, which can alter the look of the photo that you’re capturing.

The darker the photo subject, the longer time period options your iPhone will offer up. At sunset where there’s still a decent amount of light, your exposure options might max out at around 3 to 5 seconds.

In full darkness, when taking a photo of the night sky, as an example, you might see longer time intervals available, and selecting a longer time interval in this situation may allow you to see more of the night sky in the resulting image than you might have been able to capture with a shorter exposure. For maximum time, a tripod is required.

The different time intervals are worth experimenting with to get the specific look that you want for a particular image, but Apple’s default shot length is calculated using a multitude of factors and almost always results in a nice looking low light shot.

Low Power Mode Disables Background App Refresh

Some apps need to update their content regularly to show you current data, even if you’re not actively using them at the time.

Developers achieve this by using Background App Refresh. Essential app data downloads in the background to slash the time it takes for you to open an app and see its content.

Low Power Mode completely disables Background App Refresh altogether. When you turn LMP off, Background App Refresh is enabled again.

This means you may experience some delay when opening an app, because it has to download the latest data available to serve you.

Ultimately, youre not going to miss Background App Refresh if your goal is to save power. You can simply load the data you need at the time you need it.

Night Mode ‘better Sleep’ Claims Are Nonsense Says University

Reducing the blue light does nothing to improve sleep.

    | Topic:

Do you have your smartphone set to dim the screen in the evening to help you fall asleep better?

According to a study carried out by Brigham Young University , Apple’s Night Shift and Android’s Night Mode features do nothing.

“It’s widely believed that the emitted blue light from phones disrupts melatonin secretion and sleep cycles,” a .

“To reduce this blue light emission and the strain on eyes, Apple introduced an iOS feature called Night Shift in 2016; a feature that adjusts the screen’s colors to warmer hues after sunset. Android phones soon followed with a similar option, and now most smartphones have some sort of night mode function that claims to help users sleep better.”

To test these claims, BYU carried out a study. It took 167 “emerging adults ” and randomly assigned them to one of three groups. One group used an iPhone with Night Shift enabled for an hour before bedtime for seven consecutive nights, another used an iPhone without Night Shift for the seven consecutive nights, and another avoided smartphone use for the last hour before bedtime.

    The conclusion?

There were no differences in sleep outcomes attributable to Night Shift.

On top of that, for those with normal sleep patterns, avoiding screen during that final hour resulted in better quality sleep than using an iPhone with Night Shift enabled did.

    Conflict With Low Power Mode

When you enable Low Power Mode, Night Shift mode is automatically disabled. While Low Power Mode is enabled, Night Shift cannot be turned on manually via its Control Center toggle, and access to its preference panel in the stock Settings app is completely restricted.

That said, its still possible to use Night Shift Mode in concert with Low Power Mode by using Siri. Check out this handy tutorial to find out how.

Limit Blue Light With Night Shift

Research suggests the presence or absence of blue light influences our sleep patterns. Our brains associate activity and alertness with blue because of the sky we see every day. At the end of the day, the warm oranges and yellows of sunset signal its time to wind down.

Thats why many people mimic this with apps like F.lux,;which makes the colors on a computer screen warmer in the evening. Apple added a similar feature, called Night Shift,;to iOS 9.3 .

To enable it, head to Settings > Display and Brightness, and then tap Night Shift. You can enable a Sunrise to Sunrise dynamic schedule or define From and To times to set your own.

At the bottom of this menu, you can use the slider to control how warm the color temperature should be when your phone is in Night Shift.

We dont know for sure how effective Night Shift really is at encouraging sleep. A 2018 Lighting Research Center study;with 12 participants concluded that changing screen color alone is insufficient for limiting the impact of on melatonin levels in the evening, and that screen brightness should also be reduced.

Keep in mind that 12 participants is too small of a sample size to draw any serious conclusions. If you just want to reduce your screens brightness, go to Settings > Display and Brightness or the Control Center.
