How Well Does Apple Tv Color Balance Work
By measuring patches of white and color with an iPhone, and using the information to adjust the output of the Apple TV, the new color balance feature is designed to take the guesswork out of getting balanced color. In CNET’s TV reviews I use expensive meters and software to achieve similar results — although as you might expect, the iPhone isn’t as effective as a pro setup.
To test the feature I chose a high-end LG G1 OLED TV from 2021, a midrange Vizio M-Series from 2020 and a budget Insignia Roku TV from 2015. TV quality varies so much there’s no way to cover it fully for this test, but I figured these three models are a decent cross-section. If anything they likely skew too much toward the budget side of things — I’m guessing many people who spend $180 on an Apple TV 4K are using it with relatively nice TVs.
I chose two picture modes for each TV, one relatively inaccurate and one accurate. Because the Apple TV 4K defaults to HDR output I measured the LG and Vizio in HDR, while I fed the Insignia SDR. Here’s the results, in average degrees Kelvin , of each mode before and after using Apple TV color balance.
Apple Tv Color Balance Results
On all three TVs the Apple TV color balance improved the bluish, inaccurate mode significantly, by more than 2,000K, but the results varied. The Vizio came closest to the 6,500K target, but the other two were still more than 1,000K off.
In the accurate modes the Apple TV’s color balance didn’t make as big a difference. The LG’s Cinema mode was so accurate already that Apple TV reported it didn’t need to be calibrated . The Vizio actually got slightly worse afterward, while the Insignia did improve. In both the Vizio and Insignia’s case, however, it was tough for me to see a difference when I switched back and forth between Apple’s Use Original and Use Balanced beach scene.
Using that scene even the large, 2,000K-ish differences might seem subtle to you. Apple chose sand for a reason: it shows midgray and white colors well, and there’s enough color there to get a sense of how grayscale affects the green of the ocean and the bright umbrellas, for example.;
Video nerds may be interested to know that even though the Apple TV puts up red, green and blue color swatches in addition to white ones during the measurement process, I didn’t measure any major differences in primary and secondary colors before and after. I also didn’t measure a major impact on light output or gamma.

A Second Place To Look
After I wrote this article, I received a number of emails from people whose iPhones were still black and white, even after they turned off the Grayscale setting. Special thanks goes to;Anita, a commenter who let me know about a second setting;that can;turn iPhones black and white.
If your iPhone is still black and white, go to;Settings -> Accessibility -> Zoom -> Zoom Filter and tap;None. To learn more about how Zoom works on your iPhone, check out my article about how to fix iPhones that get stuck zoomed in.
How To Reduce White Point
When you enable Reduce White Point, it dims the brightness of whites and bright colors on the iPhone and iPad screen. It is different than simply dimming your screen. It sort of adds a layer of very transparent fog across the screen so that things just aren’t quite so bright. It is helpful for people that have brightness sensitivity.
Tap and drag the Intensity slider at the bottom of the screen to increase or decrease the intensity of the filter.
The way the filter affects your iPhone is shown by the three images at the top of the Color Filters screen. Swipe through the three images to see how the filter will affect the look of your phone.

How Does White Balance Work
We;dont generally notice the different color temperatures of light because;our eyes automatically adjust for it. So when we look at a white plate in candlelight, we see the plate as being white, not orange.
Or when were out in the snow on an overcast day, the snow doesnt look blue to us it looks white because our eyes adjust for the color temperature of that particular light.
While our eyes are very good at judging whats white under different light sources, digital cameras often have difficulty in reproducing the colors accurately, resulting in orange, yellow, blue or even green color casts.
Understanding the white balance setting on your iPhone allows you to help your camera out in certain lighting situations.
Selecting the right white balance setting will eliminate unsightly;color casts. This will result in photos with accurate colors, where your whites appear white as opposed to yellow, orange or blue.
So how does white balance work? Its actually very simple. White balance neutralizes color casts;by warming up or cooling down the colors in your photo.
So if the colors are too warm and youre getting an orange or yellow color cast, you can tell the camera to cool the colors down a bit.
This neutralizes the overly warm colors, making sure that your whites appear white and all of the other colors are reproduced;accurately.

Using The White Balance Presets In Camera+
The white balance setting in the Camera+;app works a bit differently to VSCO Cam. Like VSCO Cam it has an Auto white balance option, but it doesnt have a color temperature slider.
Instead, it has a selection of presets which can be used;to quickly adjust;the white balance for the relevant;lighting conditions. The presets are called: Shade, Cloudy, Flash, Daylight, Fluorescent, Incandescent, Sunrise/Sunset and Candlelight.
The idea is that you simply select the relevant preset;for the type of lighting youre shooting in, and any color cast from that type of light should be eliminated.
In the Camera+ app, ensure youre in camera mode; if you dont have the Camera+;viewfinder on the screen, tap the Camera icon at the bottom of the app.
To access the;white balance settings, tap the WB icon which is located in the settings between the viewfinder and the black bar containing the shutter button.;The list of white balance presets will be displayed as shown below.
You can swipe across this list to view more presets. Try tapping on each preset to see how they warm up or cool down the colors in the viewfinder.
Youll notice a huge difference in color temperature with some of these presets. Pay particular attention to any white areas of the image as this is where youll notice color changes the most.
Normally you would select the;white balance preset that matches the;type of light youre shooting in. So;if youre shooting on a cloudy;day, select the Cloudy white balance setting.
