Is your iPhone or iPad running out of battery quickly? Does it seem like you are always charging it? Battery life issues can stem from all kinds of problems, but one of them may be that you have too many apps ruuning in the background. This means that apps are automatically updating and downloading content when they are not open.

But you dont have to let the apps refresh in the background. You can turn it off. Restricting an apps ability to update and download content when not open is easy and can be done one of two ways. The first is by disabling all apps, and the second is by disabling only certain apps.

However, be warned that when you restrict any of your apps from updating in the background, you will not be able to use them again until you change the permission. Each time you want to use the app properly, you will need to change the setting and then put it back on if you still dont want that app to refresh in the background.

When you turn on sleep mode, your iPhone will reduce its brightness, turn off email pushing, and turn off the background app from updating entirely. Low Power Mode And Cellular Access On iPhone

There are two other iPhone options you should know about that are related to background app refresh.

One is Low Power Mode, which restricts your iPhone’s processes to save battery. It’s located under Settings > Battery or using the Control Center shortcut.

How To Manage Background App Refresh On iPhone And iPad

Background refresh is part of what allows any app for iPhone or iPad to appear to be multitasking all the time. The truth is, they’re really multitasking “just in time” by updating in the background whenever they have the opportunity or right before they figure you’ll be launching them.

In spite of how efficient Apple has tried to make background refresh, some apps still manage to consumer a ton of power and resources. Yes, looking at Facebook so hard… Luckily, if either your battery life or your data limit is a concern, you can turn off background refresh all together or just for those apps you don’t consider that important.

What Does Background App Refresh Do

iPhone 12/12 Pro: How to Turn Off Apps Running In the Background

Background refresh enables apps to perform all sorts of functions in the background you would otherwise have to keep an app open for it to access these. But what does background app refresh actually do? Here are some examples of the actions it handles without you having to manually check:

    • News apps grab the latest headlines so they’re updated when you open them
    • Apps that track your mobile data usage collect information in the background
    • Cloud storage services sync your files automatically
    • Grocery store apps detect that you’re at a store and ready the latest digital coupons
    • Social media apps like Twitter preload the latest tweets so you don’t have to wait for them upon opening

Note that if you swipe apps closed from the app switcher, they may not update again until you open them. This is one of the many reasons that you shouldn’t constantly swipe to kill all your apps.

Also, it’s important to note that for most apps on iPhone, background app refresh does not affect notifications. This means that you can disable the feature for messengers like WhatsApp and you’ll still see notifications when you get a new message. However, this isn’t the case for Android, as we’ll see in a bit.

In most cases, background app refresh is convenient. However, there are two main reasons why you might want to turn it off.

First is that by default, background app refresh is active on both mobile data and Wi-Fi connections. Apps can use quite a bit of data in the background, so if you’re on a limited data plan, this can result in extra charges on your bill.

Should I Use The Apps Background Update

In most cases, background refreshing the app comes in handy. However, there are two main reasons you might want to turn it off.

First, the apps background update is active by default on both mobile data and Wi-Fi connections. Apps can use up quite a bit of data in the background. So if you have a limited data plan it could add additional fees to your bill.

The other reason to turn off the apps background refresh is to save battery life. Apps running in the background use just as much battery power as if you were running them in the foreground. If you want to maximize the life of your device between charges, you probably dont want to waste battery on background tasks.

Fortunately, both Android and iOS let you turn off and tweak the background app update. Lets see how it works.

    Why Use Background Refresh

Background Refresh works great if you use specific apps on a regular basis. However, it drains battery life, as apps run in the background long enough to download the most current data. If you’re concerned about battery life, turn off the Background App Refresh feature for some or all apps.

This feature is all about convenience, but you probably don’t need every app to refresh in the background. It may make sense for your Gmail app to have messages ready for you when you open it, and if you’re a news fan, you’ll want CNN to be current when you open your iPad.

However, there’s not much point in background refresh for your Amazon shopping app, your smart appliance controller, or your Kindle app. This feature is all about personalization.
