Yubico Authenticator: The BEST Two Factor Authentication App! (PROTECT YOURSELF)

Authenticator apps offer a more secure way for you to log into your sites and web services with two-factor authentication. But before downloading authenticator apps, we have to choose whether it backs up the account info in case you no longer have the phone you set everything up to or not. There are a lot of authenticator apps which you can use as each one provides some advantages and some disadvantages. You should use multi Factor authentication for your online accounts and authenticator apps provide better security than SMS codes. In this article we are going to tell you the Authenticator App iPhone, so read this article carefully to get the complete information.

What Are The Best Authenticator Apps

There are dozens of authenticator apps on the market, but a few that we would recommend are Authy, Microsoft Authenticator , LastPass and 1Password . Google Authenticator is another popular option, but seeing as it doesnt require either a password or biometric login, its a potential security gap in a process that is trying to eliminate them.

Authy is a dedicated authenticator app and is expressly used for 2FA login, whereas Microsoft Authenticator, LastPass, and 1Password are password managers that have incorporated an authenticator component. Once you choose your authenticator app and have it installed, you can begin setting up 2FA for your accounts.

What Happens If I Lose My Authenticator App

If you lose access to your authentication app and did not securely store a backup through the app, you will need to use the backup codes the website supplied when you registered the authentication app in the first place. Otherwise, if you backed up the codes, you can restore them and get right into using the app again.

Almost everything can now be found onlinefrom your email and social media accounts to your entertainment and personal finance. However, this means you most likely have many usernames and passwords, which can be difficult to remember.

Even if you use a unique username and password combination for all your accounts , it could still be compromised through brute-force hacking, social engineering, or phishing. That’s why you should use a two-factor authenticator app.

But with so many options out there, which should you use? Let’s check out the six best 2FA apps for securing your online accounts.

8 Best Authenticator Apps For iPhone and Android For Protecting Accounts

Before covering privacy and security for Wirecutter, I wrote extensively about both topics for the how-to site Lifehacker. For this guide, I spoke with David Temoshok, senior policy advisor at the National Institute of Standards and Technology independent consultant Jim Fenton, who works with NIST and other organizations and independent scientist Stuart Schechter, who has spent time researching different types of authentication methods. Once we settled on Authy as our pick, we spoke with Nabeel Saeed, senior product marketing manager for Twilio Account Security, to clarify details about Authys backup and recovery processes.

Is 2fa All The Protection We Need

When 2FA options first arrived, many thought online vulnerability would finally end in the tech world. But, unfortunately, that isn’t the case. 2FA, like every other form of online security, isn’t 100% secure. Try as they might, a hacker or two will figure out a way to gain access to something they shouldn’t. In January 2022, for example, Crypto.com was attacked. Nearly 500 accounts were compromised, and the thieves made off with more than $31 million in cryptocurrencies.

Despite its imperfections, 2FA still provides better protection than passwords alone.

One of the most impressive authenticator apps on this list, the aptly named Authenticator App by 2Stable, offers a mix of great features. These include biometric authentication, a sync and backup option, and full encryption for whatever 2FA content you decide to store seamlessly on Apple’s iCloud service. It’s also one of the most straightforward authentication apps on the market.

The Authenticator App by 2Stable is free for anyone who only plans on storing one or two 2FA accounts. You can keep content across the company’s iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch apps and take advantage of family sharing, widgets, end-to-end encryption, etc. The freebie option doesn’t include backup and synchronization, however. For $10 per year, every feature gets unlocked, including unlimited accounts and the ability to sync content across all platforms. Other features include Face ID and auto-lock.

How To Set Up And Use Authy

Most people use Authy primarily on their phone, so lets start there:

  • Find the Authenticator app option and click Set Up.
  • Select Android or iPhone and click Next.
  • Google displays a QR code. Open the Authy app on your phone. On Android, tap the three-dot menu and then Add account. On iPhone, tap the Add Account button, with the large + symbol.
  • Tap Scan QR Code and use the camera on your phone to scan the QR code from Google. Tap Done on your phone.
  • The account is now in Authy, but its not enabled yet. Back on Google, click Next. Then, enter the six-digit code from Authy. Click Verify.
  • You will see a Backup codes option. This is how you can get back into your Google account if you lose your phone and access to the Authy app. Save these codes. Print them out and store them somewhere youll be able to access them if you lose your phone.
  • Save the backup codes each account provides, as that is the most secure way back into your account in case you lose your phone.

How To Set Up Microsoft Authenticator on an IOS Device

This authenticator does everything right, it keeps my codes secure, backed up and it does get the job done, and it also is just the absolute best! And it actually works parallel with Google Authenticator! Although, there are a couple of issues that need to be addressed:1. Authy for DesktopThe issue with the desktop version is that every time it is started up, the codes arent synchronized correctly because the codes are refreshed at different times than it actually is on the mobile version because the mobile version always refreshes and gets the right codes in real time, and its just not advised to any user reading this, to get the desktop version. It still syncs the right codes, but the syncing is delayed.2. Dark Mode support! Now, this isnt really an issue but its just like feedback to the developers to add Dark Mode support because the app already looks great, but I want it to look better so please add it and so it can go easy on my eyes when I use this in the nighttime. But, I also have one question. Why is there a clone to the app made by the same devs called Starling 2FA? Isnt Authy enough or is this supposed to be a companion because, I kind of dont understand as to why there is already a clone…

Best 2fa & Mfa App Imo

Have used several different 2FA/MFA apps and also browser extensions in the past. This app has been the best for me personally. The only things I hope that will be changed in newer updates is the ability to have all the accounts listed in the widget on macOS. At the moment, I can only see 3 accounts, but that doesn’t change my rating as the app does exactly as it was designed to do and function and I’m sure more features will be added. I want to thank the developer especially as this has helped me in so many ways.

    Exactly What I Wanted

I was getting fed up with all of the cheap React Native and Cordova 2FA apps. Was about to write me own, how hard can it be? Did one more search to see if I could find something that was native iOS and supported iCloud, and tried this app out. ITS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED! To the point, not always trying to sell me stuff, high quality native iOS, simple, and stores data on iCloud instead of some mysterious just trust us third party service. I have only a single gripe, but extremely minor. Could you please make the 2FA codes collapse to hide until clicked on, and style each cell in the UITableView to be more like the bubble tiles seen on the App Stores home view? Youre awesome!

8 Best Authenticator Apps For iPhone and Android For Protecting Accounts

If you do anything onlinewhich you obviously dowhether thats shopping, using social media, or banking, you should use two-factor authentication for your most important accounts. As the name suggests, two-factor authentication adds a second layer of security to supported accounts to make it more difficult for someone other than you to get into them. These two factors can include:

    • something you know
    • something you have
    • something you are

One common example of a system that uses two-factor authentication is a bank account with a debit card, where you need to know a PIN and have the physical debit card to withdraw money. A two-factor authentication app is a similar idea, but instead of a physical card, the second element is your phone.

Heres how it works. With two-factor authentication enabled on an online account, you log in as usual with your username and password. Thats factor one. Then, the site asks you for a security code. Thats factor two. This code may come in a text message, in an email, as a software token retrieved from a two-factor authentication app, or as a hardware token from a physical device . Text-message verification is not recommendedunless its the only option, as its still better than nothingdue to the ease of SIM swapping . Email verification can be secure, but only if you have strong two-factor authentication on that email account.

The Most Important App You Dont Have On Your Phone

You probably know about two-factor authentication, but theres one crucial step you likely havent taken yet.

At this point, I hope you know that two-factor authentication is an absolute must to stay safe on the internet. By setting your accounts to require an extra, time-sensitive code when you login, youre protecting yourself from the constant and increasing scourge of widespread password leaks.

But while two-factor is important, there is a good way to do it and a better way to do it. Most online services will guide down a path where youll be texted a verification code, but this isnt as foolproof as you may believe.

We talked with Nabeel Saeed who works on the terrific security app Authy available on Android and iOS for the basics on why going the extra mile to use an authentication app is worth the trouble.

Push Notifications For Microsoft Authenticator App For Ios Gets Permanently Disabled

Setting up Microsoft authenticator on an iPhone

after reset of settings in iOS by clicking Settings > General > Transfer or Reset Phone > Reset, the push notifications get disabled for Microsoft authenticator apps, which does not get reenabled.Subsequently notifications does not get reactivated even after opening the Microsoft authenticator, which does not show prompt for allowing push notifications as it did upon first install of the app.

This issue with Authenticator app not registering for APNS occurs only when the iOS Settings are reset and the app is launched subsequently. It is resolved if app is subsequently uninstalled and re-installed. Authenticator app also registers correctly with APNS when the app is installed afresh.

Other apps like YouTube and Facebook dont face this problem. They register with APNS whenever they are launched subsequently to reset of iOS Settings.

So my request is to resolve the authenticator app coding which ensures that it registers with APNS when the App is launched even after iOS settings are reset. The app too don’t show up at all in list on ios settings > Notifications, till the app is uninstalled and reinstalled. This issue does not occur with other apps like YouTube or Facebook. Please rectify this bug in Microsoft authenticator app.

Text Messages Are Far From Secure

So most people use SMS today because it doesnt require the download of anything, Saeed explains. But SMS is susceptible to man in the middle type attacks.

The con works like this: I have your password and want to break into your account, but you have SMS-based 2FA on. What now? Well, I find out your phone number and your service provider, call the support line pretending to be you, tell them I lost my phone and that they need to change the number to a new one. Its a technique known as a SIM swap.

Sound far-fetched? Its absolutely not. A very high profile case of this happened last year, Saeed explains. CEO of Twitter Jack Dorsey got hacked his Twitter account got hacked into because its 2FA codes were being sent via SMS.

Think you are safe just because you arent a juicy target? Thats not quite the case either. SMS messages are insecure by the very nature of the network theyre sent on. Specialized quasi-legal equipment, known to be widely used by law enforcement, can slurp up texts in bulk. That doesnt it doesnt even require the kind of social engineering or SIM swaps more high profile attacks are prone to, Saeed says.

    Fa Hardware Vs Software

When it comes to security, hardware 2FA devices are more secure, even compared to the best two-factor authentication apps. Thats because most 2FA keys are origin bound, so phishing schemes arent a problem, and theyre hardware-based, so the attacker would need physical access in order to unlock your account.

Thats not to say that hardware 2FA is better overall, though. Keys are expensive and inconvenient. Its also much easier to lose a USB key on your keychain than it is to lose your phone, and most phones offer remote device wipe anyway.

Support is also a problem. Far fewer services support U2F compared to TOTP, and of the list of U2F-compatible services, most of them are targeted at businesses.

There isnt a one-size-fits-all solution for two-factor authentication. Software 2FA is the best solution for personal use in most cases, though. Its free, convenient and offers a huge boost to your online security. However, hardware keys still have their place, particularly if youre a personal user whos extra careful online or if you want higher security on business apps.
