Apple Forced To Switch To Common Mobile Charging Ports By 2024

Its the end of an era for Apples Lightning cable as European countries agree to a single mobile charging port for mobile phones, tablets and cameras.

On Tuesday, the European Commission announced the decision to adopt a common charging port in the EU, to make life easier for consumers and save them money.

By autumn 2024, USB Type-C will become the common charging port for all mobile phones, tablets and cameras in the EU, the European Parliament said in a statement.

Apple will now have to change the Lightning connector on iPhones sold in Europe by 2024.

This is the worlds first political intervention of its kind that came after tech companies failed to reach a common solution.

European lawmakers have been pushing for a single mobile charging port for more than a decade, prompted by complaints from iPhone and Android users about having to switch to different chargers for their devices.

iPhones use a Lightning cable, while Android-based devices use USB-C connectors.

Half the chargers sold with mobile phones in 2018 had a USB micro-B connector, while 29% had a USB-C connector and 21% a Lightning connector, according to a 2019 European Commission study.

EU industry chief Thierry Breton said the deal would save around 250 million for consumers.

It will also allow new technologies such as wireless charging to emerge and to mature without letting innovation become a source of market fragmentation and consumer inconvenience, he said.

Make Sure You’re Running Ios 14

The first thing you’ll need to do to create a battery level automation is to update your iPhone to iOS 14 if it’s not already. Only iOS 14 and later has the automation we need for this to work.

However, that doesn’t mean you’re out of luck if you’re still using iOS 13. There’s another battery level shortcut that you can build that’ll tell you when your iPhone hits a 100% charge, but you activate it manually before it starts monitoring your battery status. So it’s not entirely automated, but it’s automated enough that you can set your iPhone down and forget about it until your charge is complete. It uses an alarm sound, so if you’re looking for something louder, whether you’re on iOS 13 or iOS 14, it may be what you’re looking for.

    Apple Could Go Portless

Although we do expect Apple to comply with the law, it would have another option. Part of the wording of the Directive reads :

It requires that mobiles phones and the similar radio devices, if they are capable to be recharged via wired charging, are equipped with the USB Type-C receptacle

That would mean it would be perfectly legal for Apple to instead sell a portless iPhone, with no wired charging port at all. Many expect that the company will opt for this at some point, to allow slimmer, sleeker devices, with better waterproofing, but it seems well see a USB-C iPhone before that more dramatic move.
