The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max are equipped with Face ID, the facial recognition biometric authentication system that Apple has been using since 2017. Face ID components are housed in the True Depth camera system in notch on the front of the iPhone.

Apple in the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max has introduced an updated TrueDepth camera system that uses new hardware. It’s 30 percent faster than before at unlocking the device and authenticating passwords and purchases, plus it is designed to work from a wider range of angles.

Face ID is used across iOS for tasks like unlocking your iPhone, allowing access to third-party passcode-protected apps, confirming purchases in iTunes and the App Store, and authenticating Apple Pay payments.

Face ID works through a set of sensors and cameras built into the TrueDepth camera system in the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max. To create a 3D facial scan that maps the curves and planes of each unique face, a Dot Projector projects more than 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto the surface of the skin, which are then read by an infrared camera.

This facial depth map is then relayed to the A13 Bionic processor where it is transformed into a mathematical model that the iPhone uses to make sure it’s you attempting to access your iPhone.

The A13 Bionic chip with built-in Neural Engine means that Face ID can adjust to minor facial changes over time, so if you grow your hair longer or grow a beard, Face ID adjusts and continue to unlock your iPhone.

iPhone 11 Vs iPhone 11 Pros: Design And Size

You definitely won’t confuse the iPhone 11 with its Pro counterparts. The iPhone 11 features an aluminum and glass body and comes in a rainbow of colors purple and green joined the black, yellow, white and red variants that are held over from the iPhone XR Purple has proven so popular it recently returned to the iPhone 12.

The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max opt for a more sophisticated look. These phones use stainless steel for their frame, and the glass has a matte finish to it. Your color options are more staid here, though Apple does include a Midnight Green version alongside more traditional choices like Space Gray, Silver and Gold.

Apple emphasized the durability of the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max when it introduced those phones in 2019. All three new iPhones boast IP68 dust- and water-resistance ratings, though not all IP68 ratings are apparently created equal. The iPhone 11 can survive a 30-minute dunk in up to 2 meters of water, while the Pro models can go a bit deeper to 4 meters.

No matter which model you pick up, you’re going to get a noticeable camera bump. It’s precision milled to fit in with the rest of the phone, whether you’ve got an iPhone 11 or one of the Pro models in your hand.

Having tested all three new iPhones, it’s clear that the iPhone 11 Pro Max was the best iPhone you can buy at the time and one of the best phones overall, thanks to its expansive screen and long battery life. It’s since been surpassed by Apple’s newer phones, and even with the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s price falling, it remains a pricey device.

Good thing, then, that the iPhone 11 is cheaper especially at its new price and offers comparable performance and good battery life of its own. In the end, that lower cost and the fact that Apple still sells the iPhone 11 may be the most important factors in deciding between the iPhone 11 vs the iPhone 11 Pro vs the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Most upgraders will look to the iPhone 12 for their next handset, at least until the iPhone 13 arrives in the fall. But the iPhone 11 remains a compelling option since its features hold up well more than a year after its release.

The iPhone X was Apples first OLED phone its now also its cheapest too. Apple had used LCD panels on ALL of its iPhones up until the release of the iPhone X. This new display technology for the iPhone was praised by analysts and reviewers alike.

The iPhone X and subsequent releases like the iPhone XS and iPhone 11 also saw Apple do away with its iconic Home button. The iPhone X Era phones used FACE ID instead, a face-scanning technology that was housed inside the iPhone Xs notch.

The iPhone X was the first time since the iPhone 6 that Apple updated the core design language of its iPhone range. The change, while drastic, was welcomed by most. The OLED panel was stunning too darks look amazing and the contrast is vastly improved over Apples LCD displays.

Apples camera technology also really start to improve during the post-iPhone X era too, culminating with the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone Pro Max, which have the best cameras ever fitted to an iPhone. Indeed, Apples latest handsets look like they could well steal the .

The Telephoto Camera Is Nice To Have

The iPhone 11 Pro have a third camera with a telephoto lens that the iPhone 11 doesn’t. At times it was nice switching to the telephoto camera. And compared to the iPhone XS, the updated telephoto camera combined with Deep Fusion processing meant I took photos with better image quality.

There were times I framed a shot better with the 11 Pro’s telephoto camera than I could with the main camera. For example, when I took a top-down shot of a plate of food with the main camera, I could see the phone’s shadow on the plate. But when I switched to the telephoto camera and moved the phone higher away from the table there was no shadow.

There are a couple caveats about the iPhone 11 Pro’s telephoto camera though. When you take Night Mode photos at 2x, the 11 Pro doesn’t use the telephoto camera. Instead, it takes a crop of the main wide-angle camera. Also, the telephoto camera excels in bright conditions, but when taking photos in medium-to-low light, I noticed better image quality if I took the same photo with the main camera and cropped in.

iPhone 11 Vs iPhone 11 Pro: Performance

All iPhone 11 models use Apples A13 Bionic processor, at the same speed, with the same 4GB of RAM. This was the fastest phone processor on the planet when the iPhone 11 models were released. And while it was surpassed by Apples own A14 processor in iPhone 12, it remains an extremely strong chip, capable of handling effectively anything you can throw at it.

In terms of pure power, its near laptop-strength, and can deal with 4K video editing, processing large files, opening and editing complex images with real-time changes, plus, yknow, messaging and stuff.

The only limitation youre likely to come across is the RAM, and even then the only problem weve ever seen is that in image editing apps, the maximum number of layers you can have depends on the canvas size the multiplication of the two can fill the RAM. But you have to be 1) doing much more than just mid-tier photo edits, and 2) slightly bonkers to want to get that involved on a phone screen.
