How Long Will There Still Be Updates For iPhone 6s And Co

As a rule, Apple smartphones are provided with the latest iOS update for around four to five years . The new version appears at the same time as the presentation of the new iPhone series in September. During the last update to iOS 13, the iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 were deleted from the update list after six years. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, however, have received the update to iOS 13.

If you go according to the tried and tested rhythm, the two devices mentioned are the next to be threatened with the end of support. Nevertheless, there is hope for owners of these Apple devices from 2015. One of our colleague MrKodi experts state that all iPhones that run iOS 13 will also be supplied with iOS 14. However, it could be that some functions are no longer supported by the older Apple devices.

With a new iPhone you dont have to worry about a support cut for a long time:

iOS 14 worked on all iPhones that supported iOS 13, while 2019’s iOS 13 dropped support for the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 line . Thus, based on recent trends, it’s fair to say that an iPhone should get iOS updates for between five and seven years.

The Most Important iPhone Lifespan Factor: Software Updates

Technically, as long as your iPhone turns on and functions, it’s within its lifespan. But practically, there are a few ways to determine if your iPhone is still within its useful life chief among them is how long it receives iOS and security updates from Apple.

Every eligible iPhone gets software updates shortly after they become available, whether it’s a major revision, like iOS 15, or a minor release to fix bugs, like iOS 15.0.1. Installing these not only brings new features to your iPhone, but also patches security issues to keep your device secure.

Over time, Apple drops support for older iPhone models. Spending time to make sure a new release works on an aging device that few people use isn’t worth it for any company. Plus, the weaker hardware of older iPhone models can’t keep up with the requirements of newer iOS versions.

Apple uses the “vintage” and “obsolete” labels for its older devices. An Apple device is considered obsolete when the company stopped distributing it for sale over seven years agonote that this is not the same as its initial release date.

At this point, Apple does not offer hardware support or the device, and service providers can’t order parts for them. As of this writing, the iPhone 4S and older are considered obsolete.

If youre running an iPhone, you might be wondering how long your iPhone will be supported? Heres a breakdown of all of Apples iPhones and whether they still get iOS updates

Apple is pretty good with support for its iPhone most models tend to get 6-8 years of iOS updates which is way better than anything in the Android space. But because there are now so many iPhones in circulation, ranging from new models like the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 to older models like the iPhone 8 and iPhone 6s. Basically, things can get confusing when it comes to iOS updates and how long your particular iPhone will get updates for.

Of course, older models are phased out after a while. Apples iOS updates scale with each new iteration. New features place new demands on your iPhones internal components. Once an iPhone gets too old, it can no longer adequately support iOS. This is when support stops.

With Apples modern iPhones, the iPhone 11, iPhone X, or iPhone 13, you will get at least six years worth of iOS updates. This is the average, although it could change, depending on features that Apple adds to iOS. But if youre running something like the iPhone 12, youll likely be getting iOS updates until at least iOS 20 maybe even iOS 21.

Why Did Apple Release The iPhone Se

Apple iPhone SE will consolidate the demand for existing older generation iPhone 6/7/8 series models towards a single device iPhone SE. This will also enable Apple to maintain a leaner 4G LTE portfolio while it transitions to 5G. Meanwhile, other global OEMs will face stronger competition from Apple in the mid-range.

It’s Good For The Environment

According to a U.N. report from 2019, the world produces as much as 50 million tons of electronic and electrical waste, also called e-waste, every year. One way to cut back is by extending the lives of our devices such as our smartphones.

“While recycling smartphones is required when phones truly reach end of life stage, keeping phones in use for longer keeps materials in use for longer, reduces waste streams, and means less energy is required for recycling processes,” said Mo Chatterji of the World Economic Forum in a post published in July.

Like the iPhone 12, Apples iPhone 11 range is still relatively new. This means if you bought any of the iPhone 11 models in 2021 or 2022, youll likely get iOS support well into the late-2020s, most likely around 2027 or 2028.

This makes the iPhone 11 any of them, really a great option for Apple fans that want to pick up a cheaper iPhone in 2021 or 2022. The iPhone 11 does not have support for 5G, however, so it is not quite a future-proofed as the iPhone 12.

If youre not fussed about having 5G, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is now less than $500. Keep in mind that when the iPhone 11 Pro Max first launched it cost over double that much around $1100. Its still a killer phone, so if youre not bothered about 5G, this is the one to go for.

Since we know what is the apple support means for iPhone 6S Plus. Now it is time to check how long iPhone 6S & 6S plus will be supported by Apple. As we mentioned, iPhone 6S was released in 2015 with the iOS 9, to begin with. Before that, all the models of the iPhone received at least 5 major updates. So, it is expected that iPhone 6S & the 6S plus will receive apple support till the iOS 14. The iOS 13 was released in September last year. We can expect the iOS 14 to release by September 2020. Is The iPhone 8 Worth Buying In 2021

To be honest, this depends on who you speak to. Talk to hardcore Apple fans, and they will tell you to go for the newest iPhone 13. It not only looks like a million bucks, but it performs great as well. Just compare the processors between the iPhone 8 and 13 and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Not only does the iPhone 8 fall short of the iPhone 13, but it also pales in comparison to the iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 12, iPhone 11, iPhone XR, and even the iPhone XS Max.

However, now this is big, however, the iPhone 8 is still more powerful than a few Androids at its price.

Let me give you a quick rundown:

The iPhone 8 costs around $450, while the costs $500, and the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G costs $500, yet the A11 Bionic chip on the Apple device is more powerful than the processors in each of the Androids listed. The A11 chip is even more powerful than the processor in the Oppo Reno 6 5G, which is a $700 phone.

Also, the cameras Apple places are some of the best in the game. The camera on the iPhone 8 is still good to this day.

How Long Does Apple Software Support Last

Statista publishes a chart that shows for how long Apple supports older iPhones. The company updated this chart in June 2021, adding the iPhone 12 series and iOS 15.

The graph shows for how long the software on iPhones has been supported by Apple, and the good news is that support for the operating systems on older iPhones – including security and usability updates – has continued for years after these phones were sold, especially among the newer iPhones.

For the early phones the support wasn’t anything to shout about, but as of the iPhone 4s, which arrived in 2011, Apple’s support has lasted for years .

Graph supplied by Staticia

The first iPhone, which launched in 2007, was able to run iPhone OS 3, which was supported by Apple up until 2010.

The iPhone 3G, which launched in 2008, was able to run iOS 4.0, which was itself supported until 2011.

The length of support increased with the launch of the iPhone 4s in 2011. That phone was able to run operating systems all the way up to iOS 9. Apple was still supporting iOS 9 in 2019 – it issued a GPS related update on 22 July 2019.

The iPhone 5c runs iOS 10, which also received the GPS related update in July 2019.

The iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 both run iOS 12, which was last updated by Apple in July 2020 – specifically the update was for devices that dont support iOS 13, for which the oldest handset is the iPhone 6s.

The iPhone 6s Is The Very Last iPhone Model With A Headphone Jack

Using the iPhone 6S in 2021 – Review

That little 3.5mm headphone jack might be the most obvious reason some users are holding onto their iPhone 6S. The removal of the headphone jack starting with iPhone 7 was a big deal when it happened, and judging by every model since, theres no going back.

With the iPhone 6S, theres no need to replace all your headphones and buy new ones with a lightning connector. You dont have to spend the extra money to buy a dongle, either. Headphone jacks may be a thing of the past soon, but were not quite there yet. Most popular headphones still come with a wire.

The iPhone 6S is also the last iPhone to have a real button. Starting with the iPhone 7, the button on iPhones stopped being an actual button. The home button after the 6S was nothing but a visual.

Using haptic feedback, the “button,” if you can really call it that, was powered by software and only made a clicking sound and vibration when you pressed it. And, going by the latest phones, full touchscreens are now going to be our only options. But with the iPhone 6S, I still have a home button that I can press whenever I damn please even if the power is off and the battery is dead.

Are iPhone 6s Waterproof

The iPhone 6 is not waterproof and even though the iPhone 6s can handle water better, it is not waterproof either unless you put a case on it. Even a short drop into a sink, pool or toilet is enough to cause iPhone 6 water damage, but you can take immediate action to save your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6s from water damage.

It’s Almost Like Apple Wants You To Keep Your Old Phone Almost

Of course Apple releases new iPhones in hopes that youll upgrade and give them more money. But after public outrage over Apples admittance that they slow down your older phones on purpose, the company is doing things a little different with their next iOS release.

Apple has announced that iOS 12 will basically be its most friendly mobile operating system for older model iPhones ever. Theyre focusing on performance issues with this latest release and have said that the new iOS will actually make your older iPhones, like the 6S, even faster than they are already.

Combine that with the fact that iPhone 6S owners still have 3 months to replace their battery with a brand new one, thanks to that aforementioned iPhone slowdown scandal, itll be like getting a new brand new iPhone for a total of $29.

So, heres to all the iPhone 6S users that will once again pass on Apples latest, expensive phone offerings and keep their cheaper beloved 3-year-old model. Hold onto it for as long as you can. I’ll be doing exactly the same.
