How to Create and Name Group Chat on iPhone

Some users have reported that theyre unable to add more than a certain number of contacts to their text messages on an iPhone. This may surprise you but certain carriers have created these limitations to protect users from spam messages.

  • If you need to network with large groups of people, its best to choose another messaging application. Google Hangouts, Slack, and more are available in the App Store. Many of these third-party applications are more versatile and user-friendly for communicating across various platforms and operating systems.
  • If youre having issues adding multiple members, it may be due to carrier limitations. It may also be attributed to incorrect contacts. If youve ever synced your contacts with your email, you may have some with email addresses rather than phone numbers. This may work with iCloud accounts but not with other emails. Check that the contact youre trying to add is the right one.
  • Another issue you may have when adding a contact to a group iMessage is trying to add someone with Screen Time limits. With the addition of Apples Screen Time comes users ability to shut down functions on their Apple devices including iMessage. If youre having trouble adding a contact, its a good idea to ask them if they have these limitations set.

Sometimes, its difficult to get someones attention in a large iMessage group chat on your iPhone or iPad. However, if you mention that person specifically in a message, your friend will receive a notification about it.

iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and higher have iMessage features specific to group chats. You can mention a contact in an iMessage group chat, and that person will be notified, even if he or she has disabled alerts for the group chat.

Mentioning someone to get their attention isnt new. Youre probably used to mentioning people on Twitter, WhatsApp, or Slack.

However, the way mentions work in iMessage is a bit different. Instead of typing the at symbol before someones name or handle, you just . . . type their name.

How To Rename Group Message Conversations From iPhone And iPad

Naming group conversations in Messages for iOS is basically hidden by default, but heres how you can reveal the option and assign a name to any group chat from iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

  • Open Messages in iOS if you havent done so yet, and tap to the group conversation you wish to assign a name to
  • Tap on the i / Details button in at the top of the group message window
  • Pull down from anywhere in the Details screen to reveal the otherwise hidden Group Name: Enter a Group Name option, tap into that when it becomes visible and name the group chat accordingly*
  • The change is immediate, tap back into the group message and youll notice the title of the group conversation now reflects the name you chose
  • The screenshot examples here use the rather obvious name of Dude Talk, representing a group discussion of The Big Lebowski.

    * This can not be emphasized enough: all users in the group chat will see this group message name as it carries over to their iPhones, Macs, iPads, iPods, etc. Choose something appropriate or you may find yourself in an awkward situation .

The assigned name persists as long as the group message persists, if a user leaves the group chat it will revert to the names of existing contacts, unless that person participates in the group conversation again or is re-added to form the same group.
