How to: Scan Photos in the Polaroid Originals App

Scanning a Polaroid or Fuji Instax photo is as easy as placing it face down on the glass and scanning.

However, there is one problem with this approach if youre looking for the best quality possible. Contact between the glass and plastic coating of a Polaroid causes whats called Newton Rings. Theyre easier shown than described:

Detail from a photo that fell victim to Newtons nefarious rings.

These rings of weird coloration can royally screw up an image, and can be difficult to remove in Photoshop.

The Impossible Project used to make a scan adapter that solved this problem by keeping the image from actually touching the glass of the scanner. These scan adapters were, and are, the easiest solution to the problem. Unfortunately, despite my pleas, the Impossible Project has ceased making them due to low demand.

I cut out holes in a thin, but sturdy piece of plastic to create this homemade scan adapter.

You can also kludge together your own scan adapter. The key is getting the image as close as possible to the glass of the scanner without actually touching it. I will have an entire post dedicated to creating one your own scan adapter soon. Im currently working on figuring out the best approach, as my Impossible adapter is quickly wearing out from use.

What Is A Polaroid Picture

Polaroid photos are instant prints made using a specific kind of film manufactured by the Polaroid firm and intended to work in certain instant cameras or fit into rear-view cameras when put in a designated film holder.

The Polaroid Corporation invented instant film, which is a kind of photographic film that generates a visible picture within minutes or seconds after being exposed.

After a shot is taken, the camera exposes the film and begins the development process, and the film contains the chemicals required for developing and fixing the image.

In the 1950s, Edwin Land was a visionary who made a fortune selling polarized filters and sunglasses under the brand name Polaroid. Edwin produced a film that could be developed and printed in a couple of minutes when his granddaughter got frustrated by having to wait several minutes to view an image he had just taken.

The picture was expensive, but it was well-received and utilized for decades. Polaroid cameras were used to capture the photographs. For passport shots, many corners photoshop utilized special Polaroid cameras with four lenses.

Then Edwin died, digital cameras arrived, the Polaroid corporation went bankrupt, and the only way you can obtain a phony Polaroid today is via iPhone applications.

How Do You Scan A Polaroid Picture

To scan a Polaroid picture, you will need:

  • A scanner
  • An editing program

Here are the steps:

First, open your scanner and place the Polaroid face down on the glass. Make sure that the photo is positioned in the center of the scanner.

Next, open your scanning software on your computer. On a Mac, this will be Image Capture and on a PC it will be Windows Fax and Scan.

Your scanned image will now appear in the software window. From here, you can edit it or save it to your computer. And thats it! Youve now scanned a Polaroid picture.

If you dont have a scanner, you can also use your phone to take a photo of the Polaroid. Just make sure that the photo is well-lit and in focus. Then, open it in an editing app like Photoshop to crop and edit as needed. And there you have it another way to scan Polaroids without a scanner!

History Of The Polaroid Lab

Although the Polaroid Lab was released this year, it isnt a new concept by any means.

In 2012, The Impossible Project – had developed a device called the Instant Lab that was successfully funded on Kickstarter. When you compare the devices side by side, they are very similar. The Polaroid Lab brings a new design, and also addresses some of the concerns many had with the Instant lab.

We won’t cover the Instant Lab in this review, but many of the concerns – battery life, reliability, build quality, and the design – that people had with the Instant Lab have been worked on and improved with the new Polaroid Lab.

So Why Did Polaroids Eventually Go Out Of Style

There are a few reasons. First, traditional film cameras became much faster and easier to use. Developing times decreased dramatically, and advances in technology made it possible to take high-quality photos without the need for expensive equipment.

Second, digital cameras became more popular. These days, almost everyone has a digital camera on their phone, and many people have standalone digital cameras as well. Digital photos are easy to share and store, so theyve become the preferred choice for most people.

Finally, Polaroids were simply no longer trendy. They had been around for decades, and newer generations were more interested in taking pictures with their phones or digital cameras. Polaroids just didnt have the same appeal as they once did.

Document Scanning Settings For The Ios Notes App

With the and iPad Notes app, you can select various scanning settings. Head to Notes > Create a new note > Camera icon > Scan documents. From there, you’ll see the options Cancel, a flash icon, a series of three overlapping circles, and Auto. Hit the circles icon.

Now, pick your preferred color options:

  • Color: By default, the Notes app document scanner saves documents in color. This option works well for text or pictures.
  • Grayscale: Select grayscale to save images in different shades of gray. We recommend grayscale for documents with pictures that you dont need in color, such as text and images mixed on a page.
  • Black and white: Save documents in all black and white. Use black and white for converting paper documents to PDF files without color, best for text-only pieces.
  • : For digitizing color photos with your iPhone or iPad’s camera. We think this is the best Notes app setting.

Additionally, you can toggle between auto and manual capture modes. Automatic scanning searches for documents that, once properly aligned, get saved. With manual mode, you’ll need to hit the shutter button to initiate a scan.

How To Scan Polaroid Or Fuji Instax Instant Film

January 2, 2021 By Dan Finnen

May 2021 Update: MacOS has recently broken capability with the V600 with the image capture app, but you can still force the scanner to work by going into settings, choosing printers/scanners, and working from there. Its a bit of kludgy work-around, so Ive recently started using Epson Scan on Windows 10. Surprisingly, it works great, and the colors that come from the app are far more saturated and true-to-life looking than macOSs default flat profile. All of the settings I outline below still apply to the Epson scanning app. Who knows, by the time youre reading this, the Epson app will be broken by a Windows update and macOS will be working again thats the fun of drivers and software.

One of the great pleasures of shooting instant film is having a physical picture in your hand, but if you want to share that picture on that great place we call the internet, youre going to have to convert it into digital ones and zeros.

The easiest, and most common way to digitize a Polaroid or Fuji Instax frame is to simply place it on a table and take a picture of it with your phone.

However, it comes as no surprise that this isnt the most high quality method. The glossy surface of the image causes reflections, the camera lens introduces distortion, and the lossy jpeg compression never looks great.

You Need To Use Flash

In most cases, photos turn out underexposed because theres insufficient light. Instant cameras thrive in bright and sunny environments.

If youre shooting indoors, its best to use flash. Some models of Polaroid cameras, like SX-70 cameras, dont include a built-in flash, so you need to purchase it separately. Make sure your fingers arent covering the flash when you take a picture.

Aside from that, you need to remember that the flash needs to charge between each take. If you see a red light in the viewfinder, that indicates that the flash hasnt been fully charged. If the red light is off but your camera is still not flashing, its possible that the battery in the film pack needs replacement.

Use The Notes App On Your iPhone

The Notes app is a very simple way for iPhone users to turn Polaroids into vibrant photos. Follow the steps below to get your Polaroids into your camera roll.

  • Open the notes app, then click on ‘new note.’
  • Youll see a small camera icon displayed above the keyboard, click on it.
  • You’ll see a list of options displayed on the screen.
  • Choose the scan documents option.
  • Take the polaroid you want to digitize and place it on a flat surface with good lighting.
  • Point the camera towards the polaroid but restrain from using the flash if you want a clear picture with no visible glares.
  • Position the camera so that it fits the polaroid.
  • Your phone will automatically scan and take a picture of the polaroid.
  • Once it does that, click Done and save the note.
  • There’s no way to save it in your camera roll automatically hence you’ll have to take a screengrab of it and edit it from the camera roll as you like.

Wait A Minute Is It Possible To Scan The Negative Directly

Unfortunately, no.

Polaroid film negatives are completely integrated into the film itself. Even if you were to remove the negative using scissors and a little know-how, youd discover that the negative is actually opaque and not translucent. As a result, light isnt able to passed through like a traditional film negative, so scanning simply isnt possible with Polaroid photo negatives.

To Include Or Not To Include The Frame

Turn all your 35mm photo negatives into digital files with a Film ...

Speaking of frames, back when I started sharing my Polaroid photographs online, I couldnt decide whether or not to include the surrounding frame of the Polaroid. The iconic frame is what makes a Polaroid truly a Polaroid, and it also proved that an image was from a real piece of film rather than the result of some lazy digital filter.

The question you want to ask yourself is if you want to draw attention to the fact that its a piece of instant film, or if you want the focus to be more on the image itself.

Personally, I decided to crop out the frame, and do so to this day. My rationale is that I dont think its important for the viewer to know how a photo was captured. The medium is simply a tool to create the photograph, and whether it works or not should not have anything to do with the process that created it. If somebody can create the same image I used Polaroid to make using only digital tools, more power to them.

However, Ive seen many artists use the Polaroid frame and shape to beautiful advantage, integrating it in environments and letting the image interact with its own frame.

Its up to you! Both ways are perfectly valid.
