Apple has released iOS 14, with a range of major feature upgrades as well as smaller tweaks to the way the iPhone works.

One of those tweaks is a privacy feature that is intended to give people more information about when and how they are being monitored ;and to stop apps from doing it.

The tool adds a small orange or green dot in the corner when an app makes use of the microphone or camera. If the dot appears, it means that an app has accessed one of those pieces of hardware recently and may be doing so to spy on the phone’s user.

An orange light refers to the microphone, while a green one indicates that the camera is being accessed.

If it does appear, swiping down from the corner of the phone to open up the control centre will show which app was doing so. The control centre should show either an orange or green dot, as well as a message indicating which app is responsible.

The message can show for Apple apps as well as third-party ones, and for legitimate uses as well as improper ones.

Ios 14 Has New Orange And Green Indicators To Warn You About Apps Using Microphone And Camera

Posted by Mahit Huilgol on Jun 24, 2020 in iOS 14, NewsiOS 14

The orange dot appears in the upper right corner of the screen whenever the microphone is activated. This is pretty similar to the green light indicator that lights up while using the webcam on Macs. Henceforth you can always check for orange light on your screen if you suspect Facebook, Instagram is eavesdropping on your conversations. The same holds good for the green indicator that tells you whether apps are using front or rear camera on your device.

There has been a theory that Facebook and other apps owned by the company activate mic in the background. It is alleged that the data helps Facebook target users with highly customized adverts. Later Facebook denied the allegations. Perhaps the orange indicator on iOS 14 should be able to end your fears.

Apple has baked in a slew of new privacy features for iOS 14. The orange light indicator is just one of them. Other privacy features on iOS 14 include a notification that alerts you when an app is trying to access the system clipboard. This way you will be alerted if an app is trying to copy passwords or any other important feature from the clipboard. Also, a green indicator will light up on the screen if any of the apps are trying to access the camera in the background. The green indicator warns you if any of the apps are accessing your front or rear camera in the background.

The Facebook Row And Ios 14s Anti

Anyone who follows Apple, or indeed the news, might have noticed the major row going on between Apple and Mark Zuckerbergs Facebook this week. In a nutshell, Facebook is annoyed that Apple is planning an iOS 14 feature in 2021 which affects the so-called identifier for advertisers that allows companies such as Facebook to track you across apps and websites.

So much so, that Facebook has placed full page newspaper ads slating Apple for hurting the ad business,;9to5Mac;reports.;

Apple rightly argues that users need to know they are being tracked, and iOS 14 will soon serve you a pop up asking you when an app wants to track you, so you can opt out. The feature is;due in 2021, but we dont know exactly when yet.

If you cant wait, Ive written a guide on;how to turn this tracking off.

    Why The Indicator Lights Matter

With the iOS 14 update, Apple introduced a number of new tools to help users protect their privacy, and force apps to be more transparent with how they use your phone.

The indicator lights are part of that, alerting users if third-party apps use their microphone or camera without consent. If you find that an app is accessing your microphone or camera without prompting, you should delete and report it.

A New Function For Protecting Your Privacy Arrived In Ios 14 So You Can Find Out What App Is Using Your Microphone Or Camera

Some users of the new iOS 14 may have thought that there was something wrong with their iPhone when they saw a small coloured dot appear in the menu bar after updating to the new system. But this is not a bug – its a very useful new security feature in iOS 14.

If the microphone is active in the background, you will be alerted by an orange or red dot on the left. .

When the camera is active it will be indicated in a similar way, this time by a small green point.

The disadvantage is that when both the microphone and the camera are in use only the green light will show until you leave the app, at which point the orange light will show.

The advantage is you can only see the microphone symbol when you leave the app and switch to the home screen or another app.

  • Tap the Accessibility options by tapping on the word in the Settings list.

What Is The Orange Dot On My iPhone

    After Apple’s most recent update went into place, users started to notice an orange or green dot in the upper right corner of their screen that appeared when using certain apps. This dot frustrated some users, who wondered if it indicated a potential breach of privacy.;

The orange dot indicates when an app on your phone is accessing the microphone, while a green dot indicates that your phone’s video and microphone are in use.

These were safety features implemented by Apple to let users better understand when apps had access to their microphone and camera. As tensions between users and large tech companies increase over concerns of data being shared, this was likely done in an effort by the company to be more transparent.

These dots don’t explain which app is using the camera or microphone, though they’re important to note if you happen to notice it while you’re not using an app that would usually require access to these things. That being said, the dot doesn’t indicate the app you’re using is accessing the microphone or camera, and it could indicate that another app is using them in the background.

Why Does It Feel Like Facebook Is Snooping On You

Here’s what you need to know…

    • The magic of targeted advertising is that it should feel relevant to you even if you can’t figure out why.
    • Facebook doesn’t need to spy on your real-life conversations, because you hand over so much information anyway.
    • Follow this link and you’ll be able to download everything Facebook knows about you. Most of you will quickly realise it’s a staggering amount of information.
    • Advertisers can use information gleaned from your activity all across the web, on multiple devices, even if you’re not logged into Facebook or other services.
    • They’ll likely know where you live, what you like, who your friends are, how much money you make, your political beliefs and much more.
    • So when you get ads for something you’ve talked about out loud, it’s almost certainly just advertisers being very good at predicting your interests.
    • It’s also possible that there’s an advertising campaign running, and you’ve seen an ad and not noticed. You’ve then spoken about it, never realising you’ve been advertised to, and only then notice future ads which suddenly seem suspicious.
    • Let’s say you talked about a holiday to Scotland, and then all of a sudden you’re being advertised holidays to Scotland.
    • You may never have searched for anything to do with that before.
    • But Facebook could use info about your level of wealth, your past holiday interests, the time of year , and your location.
    • What seems like snooping is actually just clever advertising.

How To Find Out Which App Is Giving You Dots

If you open up Control Center on your device while one of these dots is displayed, or soon after the dot has disappeared, your iPhone and iPad will tell you which app caused the dot to appear.

You can try this out by opening the Camera app, closing it again, and then opening up Control Center. It should read Camera, recently at the top of your screen, and show a little green camera indicator.

If an app you have installed does appear to be using your camera or microphones when it shouldnt, it could be the result of a bug rather than actual nefarious behavior. But you should keep an eye on it.

If the behavior continues, try filing a bug report with the apps developer, and look out for new updates that could rectify the problem.
