How To Replace A Broken Screen On Your iPhone

Cracking your iPhone’s front glass or the display might not stop it from working, but it can make it difficult and unsafe to use. Here’s a step-by-step guide to fixing a broken front panel on your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S.

Crack the front panel on your iPhone and you have three choices: live with it, buy a new one, or get it fixed.

If you have AppleCare+ or another warranty that covers accidental damage, the choice is easy. Get your phone fixed or replaced under the warranty. If your iPhone isn’t under warranty, you don’t want to buy a new one, and you’re ready to tackle a challenging, but satisfying, do-it-yourself fix, here’s a guide for replacing the entire display assembly.

Should you try this fix? Before you jump into this DIY project, I suggest you watch my video on what to know before trying to fix a smartphone or tablet. It will help you decide if you should repair the phone yourself or take it to a shop.

Lastly, understand that if you follow the instructions in this video, you do so at your own risk. Neither CNET nor any of its representatives can be held responsible for injury, damage, or loss of data.

Getting replacement parts and tools If you decide to tackle this fix, you’ll need to get the necessary replacement parts and tools. As the iPhone’s front panel and LCD are fused together, I suggest buying both as a single unit. You’ll find them for between $70 and $120 online. Just be sure that you buy the right one for your phone.

Replacing A Damaged iPhone Screen: A DIY Repair That Can ...

If your phone is under warranty, or you paid the $5.99 for AppleCare+ coverage, your iPhone is covered for up to two incidents of accidental damage with only a $29 fee added for screen repair, so by all means use Apple to fix that broken screen.

You can bring a damaged iPhone to an Apple store or a licensed service provider for a screen replacement, which can often be completed that same day, or you can mail your iPhone to Apple in a shipping box they provide at your request. Expect to be without your phone for one long, grueling week, but if you live in an area without easy access to Apple stores or partnered locations, this is a fine option.

If your iPhone doesn’t have a coverage plan, then you can try bringing it to a cheaper screen repair shop. Just make sure you backup the iPhone to iCloud first, as you never know if the cut-rate operation may end up accidentally damaging your phone. If this occurs, it may also void any iPhone warranty you have.

Could I Repair My Broken iPhone Screen On My Own

Theoretically, you could fix your broken iPhone screen by yourself, but we really dont recommend doing so. Replacing an iPhone screen is an incredibly challenging process that requires expert knowledge and a special toolkit.

Unless youve worked at an Apple Store or phone repair shop;and;have the special screen replacement toolkit, you really shouldnt try and fix the screen by yourself. If something goes wrong and a cable or screw gets left out of place, you may wind up with a completely useless iPhone.

And, if Apple sees that you tried to fix it on your own, theyll probably void your warranty and refuse to fix it after youve screwed up. To learn more, check out our article on why you shouldnt fix an iPhone screen yourself.

Before You Bring In Your iPhone

Never Fun to See a Broken iPhone 6 Screen in Dubai

If you prefer to take in the phone yourself, the first thing to do is make sure that youre going to either an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service provider. And before you head out, make sure that you check as many items of this list as you can:

  • Do your best to back up your iPhone. If its not responding, you can do it using the iCloud.
  • Before you travel, make sure that you have the correct Apple ID password.
  • If its possible, you should also bring the sales receipt. It might not be necessary, but sometimes Apple needs proof of sale.
  • Dont forget to bring the device, of course, and any accessories you might think youll need.
  • Youll also need an ID, drivers license, passport, or other personal identification ID issued by the government.
  • Its best to make an appointment before you take in your phone. You can schedule it by going to the Genius Bar Reservation page.
  • Most of the time, all you need to do is wait a little while before you can take your phone home with its new battery. But in some cases, if theyre busy or the battery needs some extra work, you might have leave it and come back at a later date. Typically, it wont take longer than 3-5 business days.

Important Note: If your iPhone has other damages that might make the batterys replacement difficult or impossible, youll need to fix that first. This includes things like a cracked screen or any other types of superficial damage.

    What You Need To Know

    • Replacing an OLED iPhone’s screen is expensive.
    • Now, iFixit is offering LCD screens instead.
    • They cost around half the price, too.

Replacing the screen on a broken iPhone X, iPhone XS, or iPhone XS Max is no fun. It can cost a small fortune thanks to Apple’s use of expensive OLED screens. And while iFixit’s OLED screens are already cheaper than going to Apple, they can still be prohibitively costly. Enter, LCD.

Normally replacing an OLED screen at an Apple Store runs around $280, and getting a screen from iFixit costs around $180. That’s a saving worth making, but it is still a lot of money. Now, iFixit is offering an LCD alternative for those who don’t want to spend quite so much money. And it costs around $85 depending on the model you need.

Right now iFixit is offering LCD screens for iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max and sure, they aren’t as fancy as the OLED screens. They’re not as bright and the resolution is slightly lower. But remember, these screens are effectively what’s used in iPhone XR. And that looks great!

Each of the screens is hand-tested in the United States, and Fixit covers them with a lifetime warranty to top it all off. If you’re looking to save a chunk of change and still get your iPhone back up and running, this is a route worth considering.

Fixing A Cracked iPhone Screen If You Have Applecare

The situation is the same if you have an AppleCare extended warranty. In fact, going to Apple for your iPhone screen repair is even more important since using an unauthorized repair shop will void your standard warrantyand the AppleCare warranty. If you do that, youre just throwing out the money you spent on it.

Unlike the standard iPhone warranty, AppleCare covers two incidents of accidental damage, with a;fee for each repair. This cost is likely more than an unauthorized repair shop will charge, but it maintains your warranty and ensures that your repair is performed by the people best trained to do it.

Find out how much your iPhone screen repair will cost, both with and without a warranty, at Apple’s support page on the topic.

Fixing A Cracked iPhone Screen If You Have iPhone Insurance

If you purchased iPhone insurance through your phone company or on your own, you should check with your insurance company to understand their policies around screen repair. Most iPhone insurance covers accidental damage. Depending on your policy, you may have to pay a deductible and a repair fee, but that combo may be less than replacing the iPhone entirely.

If you do have iPhone insurance, though, make sure to get all the facts and fees before committing to using your insurance, as many people complain about bad experiences when they use insurance for these sorts of repairs.

We recommend that iPhone owners shouldn’t buy insurance at all. Find out why in 6 Reasons You Should Never Buy iPhone Insurance.

It might seem ridiculously easy, but it is just possible that another very simple action might solve the problem. Remove your case, and remove any screen protector, and clean your iPhone thoroughly. A cloth for cleaning spectacles is one of the best things to use.

Check if the proximity sensor is working by making a call whilst stood in front of a mirror and see if the screen dims as you lift your iPhone to your ear. If it does, the proximity sensor is working. We know it seems too simple, but, just sometimes, things are.

I Broke My iPhone Xr Should I Repair Or Replace It

There are few feelings worse than dropping your iPhone, only to pick it up and find the glass has been shattered. Accidents happen, and todays iPhones are more fragile than ever after all, theyre essentially slippery metal frames sandwiched between two panels of glass.

Not only can a cracked iPhone screen obstruct your view of the display, but depending on how severe the damage, a cracked screen or back panel can be dangerous. Large cracks often result in sharp pieces of glass that can potentially cut you or even lodge themselves into your skin. But thats not the only issue. An iPhones water resistance becomes compromised with cracks and/or missing pieces of glass, providing a pathway to the phones sensitive internals.

In the case of my iPhone XR which suffered one too many drops due to my clumsy butterfingers both the front and back of the phone were almost completely destroyed. So not only was I in need of a screen replacement, but the back glass and possibly even the battery needed to be replaced as well.

This left me with a few common questions most people with broken iPhones ask themselves:

  • Should I spend money and get my iPhone repaired?
  • Should I cut my losses and buy a new/used iPhone?
  • If I got a replacement, what do I do with my broken iPhone XR?
