The iPhone 12 takes over for the iPhone 11, as Apple expands its OLED displays across its smartphone line-up and rolls out a new 5.4-in. iPhone mini . Prices start at $699 for the mini with storage options of 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The new Super Retina XDR displays are built with what Apple calls Ceramic Shield for four times better resistance to breaking if dropped. All iPhone 12 models use the A14 Bionic chip and offer 5G networking both the sub-6GHz and mmWave varieties. Both models offer a dual 12MP camera system with Ultra Wide and Wide cameras that include Night Mode for better photos in low-light conditions. 4K video recording can be done at 24 fps, 30 fps, or 60 fps and HDR video recording with Dolby Vision is available at up to 30 fps. Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 begin Oct. 16, with the phones available in stories on Oct. 23. The iPhone 12 mini can be ordered beginning Nov. 6, with availability a week later.

Although it looks similar to the iPhone 7, the iPhone SE is a big leap forward from Apple’s flagship from a few years ago, and a better bargain to boot. You get much faster performance, better cameras and wireless charging support, making for a more future-proof phone in the iPhone SE. The only reason to hold off is that the iPhone SE doesnt have a big-screen brother, though an iPhone SE Plus has been rumored to be in the works. The latest rumors suggest that phone may not ship until 2023, though, as Apple concentrates on a 5G version of the 4.7-inch SE first.
In the meantime, Apple has already released a whole new slate of phones. And the iPhone 12 mini, in particular, may be of interest to iPhone 7 owners. As noted, the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR are still around, with substantially reduced price tags. Both of those models include 6.1-inch displays, which may not appeal to people who find the iPhone SE’s compact size to be a virtue.

iPhone 6 Controversy : Bendgate
Within weeks of the launch of the iPhone 6 and the U2 drama, another issue became apparent: the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus would bend if enough pressure was applied.
Apple denied that Bendgate was the result of any design or manufacturing flaw and that only 9 people had experienced any issues under normal use conditions. Although, they did acknowledge that as per their warranty conditions if the iPhone had been subject to normal use conditions and was faulty, it would be replaced.
Despite their public denials of any design or manufacturing issues, internal Apple documents, unsealed in 2018 by Lucy Koh in the Touch Disease class-action lawsuit, show that Apple was aware that the iPhone 6 was 3.3 times more likely to bend than the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6 Plus was 7.2 times more likely to bend.
Apple eventually made significant design changes to help prevent this issue with the addition of Series 7000 space-grade aluminum, even though they have never publically acknowledged an issue existed.

The 2020 iPhone SE is the second of its kind, and is loved by those who prefer smaller iPhones. Apple takes a few cues from the past with this throwback iPhone. The 4.7-inch Retina HD display and Home button with Touch ID harken back to the original iPhone SE, and with a similarly low price. The second-generation SE offers many of the features of Apple’s most expensive iPhones, including an A13 Bionic chip, advanced camera system with Portrait mode and Depth Control, high-definition video, wireless charging capability, and long battery life.

Apple tends to make larger leaps between the original model and the S edition than it does from the S edition to a new model. The iPhone 6’s internal specs were very similar to those of the iPhone 5s. The biggest difference was having a significantly larger screen and offering an even larger size called 6 Plus. That means when you’re in a darkly lit room, you’ll need to rely on the iPhone SE’s flash. That’s not a feature the iPhone 7 offered either, so it’s not like anyone upgrading phones will miss what they never had.

Nobody Thought It Could Happen Or Would Succeed
The launch of the iPhone was greeted by quite a few doubters.
Then-Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in an interview at the time that the iPhone had “no chance” of taking over the smartphone market.
“There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share,” Ballmer told USA Todayin April of 2007. No chance. It’s a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I’d prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get.” Ballmer admitted to Bloomberg in 2016 that he had been wrong, and that Microsoft had jumped into smarphones too late.
Ballmer wasn’t alone. The then-CEOs of BlackBerry maker Research in Motion, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, watched the iPhone unveiling in disbelief. According to a Wall Street Journalexcerpt of “Losing the Signal,” a book about RIM’s rise and fall, Lazaridis pointed out, accurately, that “these guys are really, really good,” while Balsillie said that “it’s OK we’ll be fine.”
There were doubters in the media, as well. “We Predict the iPhone Will Fail,” a Techcrunch contributor wrote. TUAW now Engadgetrounded up complaints about the phone, with AdAge expecting the device to fail as well.

The iPhone XR was also announced at the September 2018 event, but wasn’t available right away. Now were getting somewhere. The iPhone 4 was the first iPhone to have a front-facing camera. Little did Apple know, selfies would take over the world. The iPhone 4 also got a Retina display. The iPhone 12 mini is a surprisingly small but still very powerful addition to the iPhone family. It also features Apple’s latest Super Retina XDR OLED display and a host of camera upgrades, but still comes with a dual-lens arrangement. The only notable differences between the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 12 are that the mini is smaller and has an estimated battery life that’s 2 hours shorter than that of the larger iPhone 12.

While the iPhone SE is most notable for co-opting the iPhone 8’s design, that’s essentially the look and feel of the iPhone 7, too a 4.7-inch screen surrounded by chunky bezels on the top and bottom. The LCD panels on both phones captured comparable percentages of the sRGB color spectrum, so you won’t see much difference in color range.

Apple says the iPhone SE should have about the same battery life as the iPhone 8, which showed a marginal improvement over the iPhone 7 when we ran our tests years ago. To that end, the iPhone SE averaged 9 hours, 18 minutes on our battery test involving continuous surfing over LTE. That’s below average for a current smartphone and well behind what the iPhone 11 delivers.
The iPhone SE 2020 can boast something the iPhone 7 doesn’t have wireless charging support. Using any Qi-compatible charger, you can juice up your iPhone SE without wires. That’s good because the wired charger that ships with the iPhone SE is the same old 5-watt Lightning charger as before. If you want to charge your new phone faster, you’ll have to pay for an 18-watt charger separately.
