The iPhone X is a thing of beauty that is worth appreciating based on its aesthetics alone. Its sleek, nearly all-screen appearance looks elegant and helped set new design standards for iPhones. The iPhone X cracked at a single 3-foot drop. The iPhone 11 withstood eight different drop tests on hard concrete, including a drop from 11 feet high . This seemed to back up Apple’s claim that it has used the most durable glass ever built into a smartphone on the front and back of the iPhone 11 . The glass was custom-made for the iPhone by Corning, the American company behind Gorilla Glass.

Small iPhones Will Soon Be No More

Apple attempted to bring back the notion of a small iPhone inside its iPhone 12 series with the iPhone 12 mini. But sales for that phone, as well as its successor, the iPhone 13 mini, have been pretty weak. Apple did not expect this. But it has now changed its approach completely: from 2022, there will no longer be a mini variant instead, Apple will replace it with the iPhone 14 Max.

The iPhone 14 Max will be the same size as Apples iPhone 14 Pro Max but unlike that phone it will be an entry-level model like the iPhone 14, replacing the place of the iPhone 14 Mini. This essentially tells us one thing empirically: Apple has crunched the numbers and done its due diligence, and the verdict is in: people no longer like small iPhones.

And this is to be expected, especially when you factor in the iPhone 12 minis poor battery life. Most of us are now used to NOT having to worry about our iPhones battery life. The reason for this is that Apples iPhones, since 2014, have gotten bigger and bigger, and used larger batteries. The iPhone SE 2020, iPhone SE 3, iPhone 12 mini, and the iPhone 13 Mini were the exceptions and these phones have all sold poorly.

And remember: new iPhones mean BIG discounts on outgoing models like the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. I think this too has been a contributing factor to poor sales for the iPhone 13 mini and the iPhone SE 3 the iPhone 11 and iPhone Pro Max are now priced much the same, and theyre far better phones.

The iPhone 7 isnt a huge smartphone by any means. That being said, its definitely a size upgrade compared to some of the older iPhone models, such as the iPhone 5. The iPhone X is slightly larger than the iPhone 7 and almost 40 grams heavier due to its stylish yet heavy back glass.

Some people like a sturdier phone while others prefer a lighter, more delicate model. The iPhone X may have a slightly more fragile back glass, but its weight and smooth finish make it feel like a hardy device.

Apple iPhone X Display: How Big Is It Really

The Apple iPhone X has a 5.8 screen… except it doesnt. You can see on the official site that the 5.8 measurement is for a rectangular screen while the X has rounded corners. But thats a minor quibble, the bigger issue is that theres a cutout at the top of the screen, which limits the usable area.

The aspect ratio of the new Super Retina Display is 19.5:9, wider than even Samsungs 18.5:9 . But again, the cutout means you get a small screen that you can practically use.

In fact, ignoring the top portion leaves a screen thats just about 18.5:9 in aspect ratio. If you were to just use 16:9 the traditional widescreen format that basically all TV shows and YouTube videos use youre left with what is effectively a 4.96 screen.

This gives you slightly more area than the iPhone 8 about 10% more surface area for video. But you do get extra area vertically for apps, website and instant messaging .

Now lets imagine that the iPhone X has an 18.5:9 screen and a secondary screen above that . Then the diagonal is equivalent to that of a 5.56 screen.

That is smaller than the 5.8 Galaxy S8, a phone that is taller but slightly narrower. This is due to the curved sides, which cancel out some of the bezel when it comes to the width of the phone.

Lets compare with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus now. They have perfectly straight screens no curves of any kind.

You get nearly 30% more surface area than the small 8 . Against the bigger 8 Plus, you lose about 5% surface area .

These model iPhones are the larger iPhone models Apple offers. Both models have a 5.5″ screen .
